It makes total sense that a guy like Vance with his very narrow life experience as a populist politician in the social, political and press environment of America would absolutelly believe that his presence in Hungary would be a massive help for Orban.
The idea that Far-Right American politicians suffer from American Exceptionalism even more than most Americans (who, judging by their behaviour as turists abroad, in the most have some serious delusions of grandeur) and thus genuinelly expected that their presence and support would sway elections in favour of their ideological brothers, doesn't seem at all far fetched.
This goes double if you think they're used to a political environment were the masses are under-educated (the quality of average Education in the US has for decades been lower than Europe) and politically simplistic due to being brainwashed by the Two Party Duopoly and a mindless take on the Constitution (treated almost like a Holy Book), and a Press thoroughly captured and turned into Propaganda outlets for DECADES leading people by the nose: it's not outrageous to think that because of the environment that made them what they are, in the eyes of American Politicians (not just Republicans but also Democrats) most of the common people are easilly swindled muppets.
Vance thinking he's a very important person and superior politician with vast experience in swindling the populous who can be a great help in convincing the european riff-raff to vote for Orban isn't exactly beyond belief.
