While he definitely didn't help Orbán, I wouldn't give him this much credit. News have been crazy over here last week, including stories, like 3 whistleblowers confirming that the intelligence agency was used to try to secure the victory by leaking data from the then opposition (now victorious) party. To me (as a Hungarian) that's a far bigger story than the pathetic dipshit flying over.

Also, just getting closer to election day would naturally make the odds converge towards 100%-0%. Since there is less and less time for a lead to disappear.

[–] 2xar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah, don't think that effect/logic was working here significantly.

Orban's party really just had at least one major scandal for every day through the last two weaks. Think like several different Watergates on steroids daily. Sometimes two or three a day.

Seriuosly, we were having calendars made about them to keep track of them and everything. It was a fun game to try to predict where the next days scandal(s) are going to come from. It was like the mother of all bad campaign finishes. I was having a blast, it was beautiful.

As a Hungarian, was there any value to Vance being there? Like would it have at least energized Orbans base supporters?

[–] mikey@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Maybe a very minor amount. I feel like the Vance supporters overlap with the diehard Orbán supporters anyways, so whoever Vance could have swayed didn't need to be swayed.

The only thing it could have contributed to is our records turnout.

Americans and their exceptionalism again.

Stop. Posting. Polymarket. It's shit if it ever is correct it's because it's not being manipulated at that specific time

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 61 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Can we extend that to all of these ~~gambling sites~~ prediction markets?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 32 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

no

wait powered by polymarket the fuck

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

God damn it.

Why do they have to ruin everything good and pure in the world.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

we'll start our own pizza prediction market, with blackjack, and hookers, and forget the pizza!

You son of a bitch, I'm in.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 4 points 3 days ago

That includes the stock market

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At this point I feel like it's astroturfing.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I dub it "induced astroturfing".

E.g. something artificially popular becoming organically viral through sheer critical mass. It is said, therefore it is believed (and reposted).

...And it seems reposters don't stop to consider "Should I really amplify a blue-checkmark Polymarket tweet?"

I see couch boy has shifted his business from killing papacies to killing presidencies. Here's hoping he'll do it at home, too.

[–] KingGordon@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Jadie Vance couldn’t order donuts. Im simply amazed he cant negotiate peace with an entrenched world power or help an asshole like orban.

so i have an aquaintance. his name is Kim and it always bothered him how feminine his name was. whatever dude. Now he goes by his initials because he thinks KD (or Katie) is more masculine. His parents must have hated him or something. I know his kids do, but like...

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 18 points 3 days ago

He killed the peace talks, too. He's the political Grim Reaper.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago

He has the mystical Kiss of Blyat

[–] verdi@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the most ignorant people on earth trying to predict anything that doesn't involve them bombing brown people...

[–] fred_garvin@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

Africa isn't ALL bad.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Honest question: Was this intentional?

Was this the goal of his visit?

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 24 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Removing Orban is good for Europe, so I guess it was not intentional.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think we need to know the other part of the equation, which is whether or not the winner is truly different, or another sock puppet themselves. I truly hope they're good.

Wish we could also see who came out as big winners in this betting.

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Having a Western-aligned (America and vassal states) leader in close proximity to a nation who has not submitted yet is certainly part of the plan, always, but could the admin truly be incompetent enough to fuck it up for themselves? Or is Orban just being replaced by a different puppet and we're spectating the theatrics of democracy, no more, no less? I think seeing things as "removing Orban is good for Europe" (and whatever other alternative is "bad for Europe") is a bit oversimplified.

[–] brem@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago

His goal was to fuck couches and chew bubblegum, but he was all out of bubblegum ..

It makes total sense that a guy like Vance with his very narrow life experience as a populist politician in the social, political and press environment of America would absolutelly believe that his presence in Hungary would be a massive help for Orban.

The idea that Far-Right American politicians suffer from American Exceptionalism even more than most Americans (who, judging by their behaviour as turists abroad, in the most have some serious delusions of grandeur) and thus genuinelly expected that their presence and support would sway elections in favour of their ideological brothers, doesn't seem at all far fetched.

This goes double if you think they're used to a political environment were the masses are under-educated (the quality of average Education in the US has for decades been lower than Europe) and politically simplistic due to being brainwashed by the Two Party Duopoly and a mindless take on the Constitution (treated almost like a Holy Book), and a Press thoroughly captured and turned into Propaganda outlets for DECADES leading people by the nose: it's not outrageous to think that because of the environment that made them what they are, in the eyes of American Politicians (not just Republicans but also Democrats) most of the common people are easilly swindled muppets.

Vance thinking he's a very important person and superior politician with vast experience in swindling the populous who can be a great help in convincing the european riff-raff to vote for Orban isn't exactly beyond belief.

Orbán was trying to get Trump to come here and do an endorsment speech for him. There were talks about it. Having the POTUS, the "leader of the free world" here just to endorse Orbán I think (or at leats they did) could have boosted his chances. Especially as Orbán likes to present himself as one of the major players. The big boy on the playground, who is friends with all the biggest ones.

But of course Trump was too lazy to fly all the way here. So he decided to send the next best thing. And when they realized they actually have no next best thing, he sent JD.

But Vance is actually not that well known here. I think 95% of potential Orbán-voters could not place or recognise him. So even though VPOTUS sounds good in theory, it really did not matter that he was here in any way.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I appreciate the context! What is your perspective on Magyar being a former Orban loyalist? Did he truly part ways, or was this to ensure the next russian sock puppet gets in for a long time?

What comes to mind is JD Vance himself once equated Trump to Hitler but then pivoted so rapidly as to he his biggest advocate.

[–] 2xar@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

There is luckily zero chance for any of that. If there is one thing the Magyar voters hate more than Orbán, it's Putin. On literally all of Magyar's speeches, or any event connected to the Tisza party, there are alway-always "Russians go home!" chants. Which ironically was originally an Orbán quote from 1989. But it took Orbán 20+ years to change his (and his voters') tune. So I think we are safe with Magyar for about a generation in this regard.

Shouldn't the first one be a couch to maximize the meme's potential?

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Didn't you see the pants she was wearing?

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

He showed support for someone. It's the kiss of death and the funny part is that they're too stupid to realize it. Hopefully they keep it up.
