Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1871 readers
43 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Anyone have any clue what this is about?

Apparently someone banned me from "Fuck AI Alcoholic Psychos@sh.itjust.works" a couple of weeks ago.

Just looking through the modlog on lemmy.world out of interest. 21 pages of me being banned. Never even noticed until now.

If this is someone vulnerable, I'll be happy to delete this post.

TLDR: Don't even want anything done about it. Just confused and wondering what happened.

How do you even ban the same person multiple times in a row?

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No idea. But apparently you can ban someone over 500 times without them noticing.

Can confirm. I'm banned right now.

Ban, unban, ban, unban, repeat?

That's what it looks like happened. It looks like the PTB wanted to spam the modlog so OP appeared to be banned from multiple places (and to repeatedly accuse them of antisemitism) but it's really just one ban.

Imagine if you get a notification every time I upvote you. I upvote you, you get a notification. I click again to take it back, no notification. But if I upvote you again, you get notified again because you just got an upvote. It doesn't consolidate the duplicates because it does not expect the duplicates.

The PTB spent a lot of time making sure everybody saw how much they disliked OP.

Which is really weird, because as far as I know, I've never even interacted with them.

I also didn't get any notifications that I'd been banned. I just happened to be looking through lemmy.world's modlog.

Goes to show there are some really strange people out there who will get upset at you for seemingly no reason.

Yeah. Like someone else said, they probably saw you somewhere saying something totally different (e.g. "Palestinians have rights", I dunno) and they got mad and did the repeated ban thing.

I really only notice when I see a community I can't vote on. Then I click on it and see I've been banned. So I just shrug and block the community.

There are a lot of really divisive issues on the Fediverse. It seems like if you're opposed to genocide, the pro-Israel users will ban you, but support Israel (even outside the genocide) or Judaism and pro-Palestinians may not like it. And while a lot of people on the Fediverse support LGBTQ+ rights, a lot of people will actually block/ban you for supporting them as well. You'd think that would be limited to MAGAt comms, but people like that are everywhere.

I think my most recent ban was for comparing what Chris Brown did (beat the shit out of Rihanna) to what Jared Leto is accused of/did (grooming teenage girls). I said they were both shitty behaviour. Someone said no, it's nowhere near on the same level. Like I'm so fond of saying, "sometimes the trash takes itself out." I'll block people for being vile and ugly about things like human rights if they do it a lot or push it on me. You gotta curate your own experience. I don't really mind being banned, usually it means the person and I weren't going to agree anyway, so it saves us future conflict. And again, the trash may be taking itself out. You're responsible for your own mental health on the Internet. Sometimes you have to hit block. Sometimes the toxic person does it for you.

I know you said you don't want anything done. Neither do I. So I'm just saying, these things happen, people can be petty, but we move on, and as we find our people online, those who would block us for disagreeing with them are just not important to our experiences. It's nice and ideal to get along despite our differences, but some people can't see past their own opinions. And mod powers tend to come with fragile egos. I mod one comm and pray I never have to ban anybody from it. I'd hate to have to defend myself in this comm. They say to act in a way that would not get you judged by your betters. Sometimes it's unavoidable. I try to do/be right, but sometimes I can be an asshole. Hey, nobody's perfect. I think most of us are just trying our best, though.
