Who collects firewood up in the tree. And high enough up to have the fall almost kill him?

Any fall can kill, even tripping over your feet.

As for "why look up in the tree" because depending on the area, the ground might be picked clean of deadwood, and even if it's not, any deadwood stuck in branches would be much more dry than the stuff on the ground.

Can't say it's the smartest move, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
