I was going to assume it was some weird religious anti-abortion thing, but if that was the case then wouldn't the babies be more sympathetic and not scary murder-faced gremlins?

Usually books that are clearly seventh rate have equally bad design and art. If that's actually real - the mismatch is strange. I'm not saying the font is good choice and the art is particularly good but they do catch your eye. The font even curves around the demon baby's skull.
