To be fair, maybe he changed over the years. He did have a life altering stroke. It's more common than you think for people to change in terms of personality, life goals, political and moral beliefs, various other ways after these kinds of things. Weather it be a stroke, a major operation, or health scare.

I have certainly changed after major health issues.
