i'm not going to hand it to Elon but i am glad this one guy can enjoy his life more. i really hope the implant continues to work in the event that Neuralink goes out of business; i'm reminded of that bionic eye (or whatever) company that re-blinded people when it shuttered

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 40 points 1 year ago

Second Sight. Really interesting article here. They didn't actually shut down the implants remotely or anything, but they stopped providing any and all support, meaning if you're going in for an MRI/surgery and the doctors have questions, there's nobody to provide answers. Didn't even tell patients that they'd shut down.

If there is any progress at all with nueralink, I have to assume its because Elon is entirely separated from any decision making whatsoever.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Play Civilization VI

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

Bro they really just glossed over the issues he said?

[–] pixelghost@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When he said he has to charge it every 6-8 hours or so.... what-the-hell

I'm sure that'll be fine if they ever manage to restore motion in the limbs.

Upgrade your brain's battery capacity (via a software unlock) for only an extra $4,000/month!

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

it's one thing to have your car become a brick when the company goes out of business...

I mean, if i lost all control below the neck and had to play games using my tongue with an accessibility controller i'd seriously consider it.

That said, i'm like 90% certain this would also be achievable with Tobii eye tracking and a few other things. Like, it's cool, and i'm happy for him bc this sounds like a step up in terms of his ability to have fun and relax.

That's nice. Isn't this tech like 10+ years old?

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

I've heard their only distinction is a somewhat denser set of connections. They can connect to more nerves than equivalent devices, but not a game changing number more. Aside from that, yeah, this is decade old tech.

Yeah every time this thing comes up I go “Wait that’s not new there are people doing that in the building I work in”

[–] oregoncom@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's literally undergrad student clubs at my school doing this.

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The student clubs are doing brain surgery?!

[–] oregoncom@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

they don't do the implants themselves but they do the signal processing, both in terms of the hardware and software side. They do design non-invasive interfaces too.

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

https://neurosity.co/how-it-works

I went looking for non-invasive brain-machine interfaces, basically glorified eeg machines, and found this thing. And this sucks so much. Nothing about accessibility or controlling software. No, it's all techbro "neurohacking" bullshit where they're going to make you more productive bc some bullshit.

Transformative way to interact with technology providing new capabilities? Fuck that, we're going to build a surveillance camera for your brain so your boss knows when you're off-task with ms precision.

Tragic that no one told him civ 6 is trash

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good lord I am using all of my strength to avoid posting a very off-colour joke specifically about this dude and Civ

[–] Big_Bob@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

Do it! Bans are temporary, lulz are forever!

[–] EelBolshevikism@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Elon’s going to scam this poor person, oh god

[–] D61@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Shit dude, I can play Civ VI right now if I wanted, no neuralink needed.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The guy is quadrapeligic, though.

[–] D61@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

lea-tired uhh... hmmm... ummm.... not sure if I should delete the first comment now... or like... just leave it there so that everybody can laugh at me.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

peppino-square-up Only a coward deletes their comments debatebro-r . But putting in something like "I didn't know some details and have changed my mind" is acceptable under the code duello.
