The Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815) was the last major engagement of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), fought by a French army under Emperor Napoleon I (r. 1804-1814; 1815) against two armies of the Seventh Coalition. Waterloo resulted in the end of both Napoleon's career and the First French Empire and is often considered one of history's most important battles.

On 1 March 1815, Napoleon returned from exile to regain control of his empire, beginning the period of the Hundred Days. The great powers of Europe responded immediately by branding him an outlaw and declaring war. The decisive Battle of Waterloo was fought between the towns of Mont-Saint-Jean and Waterloo in modern Belgium, then part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Napoleon's objective was to crush the Anglo-allied army of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, before it could be reinforced by a nearby Prussian army under Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von BlΓΌcher. Napoleon nearly succeeded in his goal when his men captured the farmhouse of La Haye Sainte and stood poised to break through the allied center. However, the timely arrival of several Prussian corps and a failed charge by the French Imperial Guard dashed Napoleon's hopes of victory. Four days after his defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon abdicated for a second time and was exiled to the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic, where he would die six years later.

The Battle of Waterloo has often been regarded as one of the most decisive battles in history; it brought an end to the Napoleonic period and ushered in a new political era known as the Concert of Europe. Additionally, Waterloo marked an end to nearly 23 years of constant warfare that had devastated continental Europe since the Battle of Valmy in September 1792. After Waterloo, Europe enjoyed decades of relative peace, as the great powers did not fight another major war until the Crimean War (1853-1856). Still, the importance of the Battle of Waterloo is sometimes overstated; historians have argued that the odds against Napoleon were impossibly high, and had he not been defeated at Waterloo, he likely would have met his end on some other battlefield shortly thereafter

Be sure to get a Covid shot if you haven’t had one in the last 6-9 months! Immunity can start to wane significantly after 6 months and 9 months ago an updated shot was released.

In related news I got one yesterday and it’s kicking my ass (but still much less than covid did)

i love having dumbfuck cocksucking redditors downvote me and call me a tinfoil hat wearing moron for telling them FACTUAL INFORMATION THEY COULD LITERALLY VERIFY ON THEIR OWN WITH 5 SECONDS OF TESTING

some guy misspelled fuck 100 times and some shithead was making fun of him for it and I mention that Reddit will shadow delete comments it thinks are "too mean" and you get maybe like one, two fuck words tops before it gets triggered, and people are acting like I'm some conspiracy dipshit. THEY CAN JUST GO TEST IT THEMSELVES, CHRIST.

The comment I posted calling the guy who insulted me a moron got shadow deleted because I called him a moron twice! fuck!

you could drop the most well-thought out clean-cut polished-to-a-sparkle bit in the group chat but nothing will be funnier than being admin and changing the group photo to a selfie you took, cropped like kiryu-stare and preferably one that looks like shit, so that your face stares down at the messages going on like

Never assume anything will have positive consequences. Our department developed some new scoping framework which is supposed to make sure we don't approve overwhelmingly large projects or get flooded with ad hoc tasks. The scoping framework has been used to shut down every small exploratory project I've pitched that I could do when I'm idle. Which is fine I guess. If you would rather pay me to sit on twitter than work on relevant stuff I think would be enjoyable then great.

My job knew my coworker was leaving months in advance and didn't hire someone to replace him. They're talking about it now but even if they hired someone immediately, it'd take around 4 months minimum to train them...

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even without a replacement that tume could've been better spent transfering projects over. In my experience even dealing with people in similar roles that have been at the company for a while it takes closer to 5-6 weeks than 2-3 to do meaningfully.

Thinking about all the cool things I could be doing with my life during my best years instead of wasting 40+ hours per week at the business factory so I don't starve or go bankrupt after falling down the stairs

Went to an African restaurant and I ordered some honey beans. The waitress there just looked at me in shock. "You will not like this, but I will tell the chef to try his best." The meal comes out, it's a good plate of beans, nicely seasoned. A little bit of fish and plantain on the side. Overall pretty good. I finish the meal and the waitress comes back saying "I cannot believe you liked it." She then went to tell the chef in the middle of finishing the check so I had to stand there for like 5 minutes.

Is it a stereotype for white people to hate honey beans? It tasted fine and I had no idea why she was so surprised about it.

Accidentally went to r/all today on reddit-logo and this thread from a sub I hadn't seen since I'd mostly left that fed-to-public umbilical of a website called "BoomersBeingFools" and it really instilled in me just how toxic, shitty, and privileged redditors are all over again. The way they stereotype other people, the way they band together to circlejerk about how funny and cool it is to put someone down based purely on preconceived notions that the one who brought them up presented, the way they assume that everyone is of the same financial privilege as they are... it's disgusting to me, on a fundamental level.

Reading commenters joking and downplaying the worth of their "starter homes" when you live in a room attached to a garage and struggle to keep more than $200 in your bank account proletariat

Seeing a PM liking a post on linked in on how in the future you won't need tech people because you can tell an LLM what you want. And it's just funny imagining this person who never knows what they want or why they want it, and it takes multiple meetings of prodding to get any sort of specification and a reason why it's a priority, to generate a reasonable prompt.

I got a TikTok about a brilliant move on chess.com. for context, a brilliant move is a move that dramatically swings the chess computer's opinion about the board state in favor of the person who made the move. A brilliant move is the highest tier of move and is given out (almost) exclusively in the case of a piece being sacrificed.

The move I saw involved sacrificing a rook to create a check so that either the king takes it and is trapped and immediately mated, or a pawn takes it revealing the king's flank for the other rook while the queen is on the same rank. The resulting end game after queen takes pawn takes in this scenario is your pawn unstoppably getting promoted first.

I go to the comments and there's a deeply unserious person with a bored ape profile picture that goes "I don't understand why it's a good move, the pawn just takes." Fucking crypto bros. Fuck em

So there I am looking at a screenshot of some Instagram post of some very obviously "AI" generated booba lady, and the comments are all dudes professing their overflowing love for this non-existent woman, begging the picture to meet up with them and marry them.

Can you guys tell me if those comments are legit? Can you please just tell me the comments are all just bots? I cannot believe these are posts by real, fully awake people. I will not believe it.

Decided to try a "power nap" cause I've got some stuff with friends to do today, and I was woken up earlier than expected today, making me very tired. As soon as the caffeine was ingested and my head hits the pillow, it takes naught but 15 minutes until a loud as hell riding-mower starts doing donuts outside. So yeah, not much shut-eye to be gained, but the caffeine is helping me at least. (Though the crash will be catastrophic.)
