They don't trust voters not to choose a succdem and offend pwecious widdle capital, and they're worried they couldn't fix a second election after 2020 almost went to Bernie despite their best efforts. So now they're just propping up the old man strategically until it's too late and they can put whatever blob priest into office they like without the unwashed masses messing it up with their "democratic will" or whatever. Technocrats must sit the eternal throne whether the people want it or not.

If the Democrats were an actual party I could see it.

They aren't. They're a loose collection of cults of personality built around a few key figures, there aren't really "Party" elites because their connection to the Party is merely a rung they climb to their own personal branding. Obama was able to help Biden win the primary because his personal brand is so strong among Democrats, not because he gives a shit about running the Party or advancing the Party's agenda. Even stopping Bernie was more of a way to protect his legacy as the Hope and Change President.

If Obama had not told Biden not to run in 2016, Biden would have been elected and would not be running in 2024. The 2016 and 2024 elections are Obama's fault

Synthesis: some of those clusters thought their chances were better if they skipped the primaries and waited to insert their person whenever Biden keels over.

(But I think they were largely caught off guard with how early he sunk.)

Primaries are when the elites choose their candidates.

US elections are run on campaign donations. It’s when the bargaining of political favors take place. It’s when the candidates offer to the bourgeois donor class what they can bring to the table.

There is no such thing as democracy in the Democratic primaries (pun very much intended), just look at what happened to Bernie, if you still believe that the primaries are about the voters choosing their candidates.

They cannot replace Biden now because too much money and interests have been tied to Ukraine already. They’re stuck with Biden no matter what. Kind of a checkmate situation unless Biden can pull off something extraordinary, something huge that could change the national discourse overnight.

He can always die. I don't think him dying would actually change that much. The issue is more about him being unseated by a rival political faction than him not being the candidate. If he were to die and a last testimony, real or fabricated, were to materialize pointing to Harris (or any other centrist) as Biden's appointed "successor," then the gravy train will continue to truck along since Biden's personal network can save political face and just coalesce around the successor. Being unseated by a rival faction is politically humiliating and means Biden's personal network being replaced by the rival candidate's own personal network, but an 81 year old man with dementia passing away is an act of God.

Do you think the Bidens will just give away decades-worth of business and political connections with Delaware-based financial companies to someone like, say, Kamala Harris?

It’s literally their family assets. It’s what made them powerful and influential.
