Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1346 readers
29 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

yeah, need more input than those two screenshots.

what was the context? Did you had a run in with the mod before?

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 43 points 6 months ago (1 children)
  • admin @stinky of redlemmy.com (tiny instance with <10 users) gets in an argument. they run the instance so they are “in charge” of that small part of the fediverse but they let that tiny power go to their head.
  • other user is uncomfortable and reports admin
  • in the current version of Lemmy, all reports go to both instance admins and the local community mods
  • the user @stinky was harrassing obviously primarily intended the report to he seen by local community mods, which it was, but it also went to redlemmy.com admins, which happens to include @stinky themself.
  • admin sees the report and harrasses the other user for it (in the comments shown in the post)
  • local mods (correctly) remove the power tripping admin as shown in the modlog

Did you had a run in with the mod before?

i’m not involved in this, purely an outside observer

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 12 points 6 months ago

well, that username certainly checks out.

[–] ballskicker@sh.itjust.works 16 points 6 months ago (3 children)

More input. Just strange. I blew it off and moved on but if the same thing is happening to others even more aggressively then that's not okay

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 17 points 6 months ago

I erroneously reported one of his posts in a community on his instance and after I did not respond to his pm he stalked me to another community to harass me.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 7 points 6 months ago

yeah that mod is certainly power tripping. Also that interaction is just weird.

I can't navigate away from redlemmy with just a backspace, I have to go to my search history and hop. I've seen similar behavior on ad supported sites. Is that a bug with mozilla or are they sticking a little redirect in front of traffic?

[–] ballskicker@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Dunno, I only use the Voyager app on my phone. Wouldn't shock me if there was a redirect though

[–] horse_battery_staple@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Pretty scummy if it's intentional. Also a way to log traffic, especially IPs, and inject cookies.

Can someone elaborate more on what's going on? Did this person actually think that if you posted to a community on a different instance, that they couldn't remove the contents?

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Maybe? The modlog shows they've also been banned from that community.

Given they're running their own instance, I'm sure they'll be back with a new account, so maybe the admins will block or defederate that instance.

Tiny angry king on a tiny angry little hill LMAO

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

When you get reported it goes to the mods of the community, the admins of that server, and the admins of your server. Or so I'm led to believe.

Perhaps someone intended to report them to that community and didn't know their admins would get it too.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 3 points 6 months ago

it goes to the mods of the community, the admins of that server, and the admins of your server

this is correct.

i know some have suggested a feature change to Lemmy to allow us to chose to which party(s) the reports go to, but in the meantime the limitation precipitates a sort of gentleman’s agreement among admins (or at least admins that want to remain federated) not to abuse the reports that are clearly not for them.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 4 points 6 months ago

yes, or at least didn’t care about the consequences of abusing admin responsibility and flaunting federation privileges.

[–] satans_methpipe@lemmy.world 12 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Lol, I just dealt with that user the other day.

Edit: I just checked out that instance and decided to remove a name that I called them in the line above. That instance is a profile of untreated mental illness.

Small instance with respectful moderation staff

Yeah looking at this I'm not so sure about that. Seems like a very big PTB to me.

[–] activ8r@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 months ago (2 children)

To be completely fair... The mods removed the comments. It was the admin that was causing problems 😄

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It was the mods from another instance though, not the ones on his instance. Which is what the sidebar was describing. The instance moderation staff of redlemmy.com are anything but respectful, if this interaction we saw here is any indication.

[–] activ8r@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago

Ah! Well then I stand corrected.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 3 points 6 months ago

yep that’s why “bastard” is a hierachy-neutral term :P

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

where/how did you find that quote? /gen curious

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

It's from the sidebar on the complaining admins's Instance, redlemmy.com, it's the top line.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

oh, slay- for the life of me cannot find out how to open their sidebar but i believe you haha

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 months ago

It's under the little about dropdown on the side.

Photon UI can be a bit complicated, I don't really understand why someone would set up an Instance with Photon but not having the simpler Lemmy UI as a fallback, that just doesn't make sense to me.

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 8 points 6 months ago

interesting combo of YDI, CLM, and PTB (the admin not the mod) here i think
