99% of the time, unless there's something I'm convinced I can only get there and I really need it.
First check the archive sites.
Report it on ublock origins github, gets fixed pretty quickly from my experience
I handle them by realising that whatever they have, it's not worth disabling the blocker for, so fuck them.
I get my Spanish Latin media 🏴☠️ from many sites like that.
Not always an option to just go elsewhere.
Unless you really trust that site, I wouldn't do it. Think "ppp" (prohibit porn- or piratesites), because those sites are the least trustworthy to load javascript.
Ublock > block element
Block third party scripts and third party frames.
Works wonders every time.
I try and use the right click>inspect, and just delete stuff and see what happens
Thanks, but what about when a website doesn't let you do this? More than once I've seen websites that literally disable the right mouse click, is there a shortcut for this?
Do not allow the website to replace the contextual menu, that is a browser setting (extensions can change/block it too). F12 is the shortcut to get to the page editor by the way.
F12
Ctrl+Shift+i should bring up the inspection panel. It won't be for the specific element, but it should have a button to get an element picker.
In desktop Firefox, Ctrl+Shift+C lets you click on an element and inspect it. Then, just press the Delete key. Page scripts can't block this. On mobile, you have to rely on adding more filter lists.
I think there's a shortcut, like if you press alt or ctrl while right clicking, you bypass the block. But im not 100% sure
left shift in firefox iirc.
I avoid the site.
Go to uBO's dashboard, disable scripts, reload. Or just set browser to Reader Mode. Somehow, works over 75% of the time.
If they deserve it (e.g. 404media) I'll drop it. Else it's abandoned.
This is the way.
If they're a shit website, I'm a lot more spiteful and put their content on the way back machine or post it publicly somewhere.
With more adblock (filter lists).
Most the sites that have that 'feature' usually have a link that says " Continue without disabling adblock" but if I can't find that I use the next site in my search.
The back button
I close the tab.
I use uMatrix (uBlock's big brother), so sites that do this generally lose first-party JS privileges real fast.
You close the tab, and block the domain completely
90% close it, bye 10% try archive.is if it doesn't work, bye
I usually switch to reader mode if uBlock Origin doesn't do the trick
Well, if it's not something I really want to see, I just close it. If I do want to see it, then:
- if I'm on my laptop, I open dev tools and remove the element blocking other interaction
- if I'm on my phone or the above doesn't work on laptop, I open an anonymous window, disable adblock, read/watch/whatever the content, enable adblock, close anonymous window
I do and same for other kinds of annoyances, like the recent trend of "pay us or give us consent to mine your data".
I hit the X
Search for the headline on a search engine and read the article elsewhere. Usually these news sites just copy and paste the article and slap a different website name on it.
Surprised nobody's mentioned this: https://reek.github.io/anti-adblock-killer/
Me surprised too, just another boring comment section as if it were reddit. It should be enough when UO gets mentioned once and the other comments' threads specialize on alternatives e.g. AdGuard Desktop, user scripts, etc. Oh yeah jokes/memes are most important so that stuff gets the most upvotes, another reddit style classic.
If it's something I really want and using crypt(dot)cc or whatever it is with the captcha like puzzles with the alien like creatures, I disable and make sure to re-enable when done. Otherwise I go away.
For other sites, if I cannot element destroy it and see the content, I'm outta there as fast as a deadbeat who just found out his girlfriend is pregnant.
Block scripts, using whatever you want to use. I use Brave (queue criticism)
queue criticism
It's cue.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cue
a signal (such as a word, phrase, or bit of stage business) to a performer to begin a specific speech or action
That last line is your cue to exit the stage.
I assume you were requesting a critique on your comment.
It's funny that without actually spotting the mistake I just read it as the op expecting multiple criticisms to and basically telling people bringing them to get in line.
I think they may be British, and want those who wish to criticize to for a queue
Maybe they were suggesting that those that are criticizing are welcome but should be orderly and take turns?
Usually, I’m on mobile, so either reader mode or Hide Distracting Items.
The rest of the time, I just find another source.
I guess rethinking the browser metaphor could help.
Like who tells you that ads couldnt just be displayed on an invisible popup window? Or a second screen?
Those sites generally detect if you dont load certain content. So I guess cosmetic filtering (downloading but not displaying) could already help
Big sites have caught onto this unfortunately, but sometimes switching to reader mode is a quick bypass. Putting the link in archive.is usually works, that's what I do if it's urgent local news (eg when my state is flooded or frozen or perhaps on fire)
https://12ft.io/ is faster than archive.is and doesn't actually archive the page. In cases where you just want to read it and don't want to waste server space on it, it's maybe a better option.
Haven’t seen anyone mention this, but a lot of the times if you’re quick you can just click reader mode and the whole page loads.
I create a ublock filter. Out of interest, what exotic media are you trying to find specifically that requires using those sites?
