Imagine all the frustrated parents struggling with the many obstacles that our societies maintain against rising children and their surpressed realization that they could have defied social expectations and just stayed childlessly happy.

They actually were a gay couple according to one of the show's writers. Modeled after him and his partner, Arnie and Mark.
To be clear, they were written from the perspective of a gay man, with their interactions modelled after his experiences, but they are not canonically "gay" (they have no sexual orientation).
