"You guys aren't gonna use AI for bad stuff, right?"

Tech oligarchs: whaaaaaat no we actually want to be regulated because of how dangerous this technology is!! Also tech oligarchs:

"The rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check."

[–] Inaminate_Carbon_Rod@lemmy.world 27 points 3 weeks ago

Delivering that line with such glee like he thought he had some sort of high ground.

Makes me sick.

[–] Archangel1313@lemm.ee 126 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Remember when this stuff was called "the quiet part', and it was considered bad when you said it out loud?

Yeah...good times.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 94 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"what do you mean we can't use fake misleading videos to fuck democracy?"

[–] Don_alForno@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago

"The rules were you guys weren't gonna fact check."

[–] natecox@programming.dev 80 points 3 weeks ago

What a fucking chode.

If you need it to be legal to deepfake to manipulate politics you’re the problem.

[–] kubica@fedia.io 80 points 3 weeks ago

Here the guy that was going to leave politics and go back to Tesla.

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 64 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Well, this is a solid admission that they are going to use deep fakes to influence elections.

[–] zqps@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Noo we just demand this specific instance of deregulation because... uh, it theoretically might help small businesses!

Also why would you even care about anything other than short-term GDP increase. Are you some kind of communist?!?

[–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 weeks ago

Are least it's evidence that worry they might need to need to influence anther election.

Silver lining...?

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 61 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

This is what the right is doing, while the DNC is censuring their own members for simply encouraging democrats to run against their own apathetic incumbents.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 8 points 3 weeks ago

You misspelled pathetic.

[–] Eldritch_Alyx@lemmy.world 59 points 3 weeks ago (6 children)

How isn't this immediately a red flag?

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 33 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There are so many flags right now it’s just a sea of red undulations. Done by design, so that we don’t notice the death of democracy.

[–] JonEFive@midwest.social 8 points 3 weeks ago

They overwhelm everyone knowing that 80% of this shit is gonna get outlawed or overturned, but that 20% that gets through is gonna be huge for them.

Cool. Let's go with criminal impersonation, defamation, and slander/libel instead them!

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 47 points 3 weeks ago

And the Fake News crowd goes wild! By the way, that's conservatives and all of their media.

[–] ZeffSyde@lemmy.world 45 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Can we join forces and spam X with a flood of Informative deep fakes of select individuals?

[–] suite403@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You could, but it would just be limited reach. There is no way to fight back using his own platform beyond just not going there.

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Something that has been bothering me lately. Reasonable people who counter the toxic misinformation leaving the platform only allows the disease to grow and spread. But reality is they weren't reaching the people that needed the dose of reality anyway. And then I realized that the algorithms have always been the disease, my feeds are my own echo chamber to drive engagement, just as theirs are. I've pretty much cut all social networks out. The only way to change minds is honest respectable conversation, and I am not a person to change anyone's mind.

We're fucked

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

Link me some and I'll have fun with it.

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 39 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Elon Musk, Republican President who is literally BANKROLLING THE ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY, SUING because he can't Create Fake News with AI, is PROOF that DEMOCRATS are the Fake News!

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Musk is holding the Democrats smoking gun!

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 36 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

X’s lawsuit claims the law’s “requirements are so vague and unintelligible that social media platforms cannot understand what the statute permits and what it prohibits.”

Vague, overly broad laws are indeed a problem; I’m willing to give him that. ONLY that.

Unfortunately for Musk, this is not vague. If the footage is something you created or manipulated, you know perfectly damn well whether it’s legal or not. He’s trying to confuse the issue, and conflate fraud with free speech. Hopefully, the court will see right through him.

[–] Erasmus@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Easy solution would be for the state to show up with an AI generated video of him giving an explanation as to why he (Elon) has no clue what he is talking about and this is obviously the greatest law ever.

Or maybe take the opposite stance…lol

Why would they want to "influence elections"?

Sounds shady.

[–] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

It's a huge part of the business model. Social Media is valuable for its data on people, and for its ability to manipulate and influence people.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 33 points 3 weeks ago

“How will we win if we can’t cheat?”

[–] MCasq_qsaCJ_234@lemmy.zip 28 points 3 weeks ago

Minnesota scraps that law and uses Elon's deepfakes to claim he wants to destroy Medicare

Elon calls for laws banning deepfakes

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 27 points 3 weeks ago
[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 22 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Next up: Elmo challenges laws that prohibit murder and child pornography, all in the name of a better world!

can elon and linda hurry up and die already

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Rich people live a lot longer than us.

[–] captain_oni@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

There's a way to fix that, but we have been convinced we need to "stay civil" while the rich fuck us over.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"Wait a minute. Are we the baddies?"

[–] IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I can place a pretty hefty bet that this thought has not visited Elmos head.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

I don’t think good and bad are concepts he is capable of understanding, like empathy.

[–] JonEFive@midwest.social 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

So is their position that deception via impersonation is free speech?

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 2 points 3 weeks ago

Who can make a deep fake of der Elon professing his love for trans people? Wherein he states that he was wrong about the woke mind virus. That he wishes he had been born to a black family.

[–] unrealizedrealities@kbin.melroy.org 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

MAY I LIE TO INFLUENCE ELECTIONS? yes, but.... FUCK YOU, I'LL LIE ANYWAY ON AN OVERLY ADVERTISED AND PROMOTED PLATFORM EVERYONE IS FORCED TO USE

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

How are people forced to use it. I’ve never used it.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

Gee, I wonder why.

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

They did more than influence the past election, and have plans to do the same in the upcoming ones... so ofcourse any regulation against these plans must be taken away.

[–] skvlp@lemm.ee 6 points 3 weeks ago

Elon, go crawl into a hole and stay there for the rest of your life. Ok?

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Something only a childish brat would even think to try

[–] Hathaway@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

My state will see you in court.
