As a child, I used to love that the (at least Latin American) Spanish dub for Bruce Willis in all of his movies was the same guy dubbing grown up Goku. Seeing one immediately reminded me of the other.

Mh ... that's a hard one. I'm not quite sure which I despise more, AI or German dubbing.

Give it time, I'm sure we'll soon have both.

Hard disagree. While they are worse nowadays due to tighter budgets and schedules they elevated several otherwise mediocre movies so much back in the day. There still are some legendary voice actors i love to listen to. It creates an unique experience different from the original. AI on the other hand... hate it.

I'm sorry, but I have to hard disagree right back. You can argue that dubbing made movies available to a wider audience .... but no movie was ever "elevated" by German dubbing.

Have you ever seen a Bud Spencer movie? They’re straight up not even half as funny in the original language.

Well, those are kind of weird because they don't really have an original language. They were even dubbed in English.

Reminds me of that slightly meta Eddie Izzard bit where he talks about doing a joke in French to a French-speaking audience where he impersonated Sean Connery. Imagine Connery speaking French in his own acshent and idioshyncratic shtyle; kind of funny even without whatever it was he was saying. Unfortunately, none of the French audience had appreciated it much, and so after the gig he asked someone about it.

It was then he learned that Francophone audiences were more familiar with Connery's designated French-speaking dub actor, who sounded nothing like Connery.

The audience might have understood what was going on, but it kind of killed the joke.

In english all cartoon characters are voiced by Tom Kenny, Billy West, or Tara Strong, with few exceptions.

My Little Pony: Make your Mark had a huge controversy about this shortly before it got cancelled. Though I think this was just a rumor and they had no plans on firing their international voice actors. Instead, they fired everyone because the show got canned.

Brazilian VAs also have all sorts of crazy mashups, like Goku, Spongebob and Sean Austin (Samwise Gamgee) all being dubbed by the same guy.

On the other hand, we often see the same character ending up with different voices if the show goes on long enough, like Homer Simpson having 3 different VAs (1st being the best and 2nd being the worst) and Marge having 4. Secondary characters sometimes feel like they have a different voice for each episode
