Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Can you imagine, you bought a pallet of TP in 2020, and you finally run out in 2025 just intime for there to be No TP because of tarrifs.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 25 points 6 days ago

The universe has a weird sense of humour.

Why do people hoard TP?

Like... So many useful things...

Water

Non-Perishible food/snacks

FM/AM Radios and Two-Way Radios

Satelite Phones

Self-Defence weapons (Or Firearms, if you are in such a jurisdiction that allows it)

Tools

But no, they went for the toilet paper... 🤣 🤦‍♂️

Can you imagine the world ending AND having a dirty bum. Some fates are just too unbearable.

You ooga booga throw shit at the enemy

Then while they are bamboozled, you go grab their TP

Obviously

People bought excess of lots of things, toilet paper just was more noticeable more quickly because of it's huge volume to value ratio, and slow restocking (in part because of that ratio, it's not worth warehousing so there was little flexibility in the supply chain).

Once the shortage started becoming obvious it was self-perpetuating, you needed to buy what toilet paper you could when you could because you didn't know when you would be able to buy again. The supermarkets near me at the time had no toilet paper restocked for more than three months as supplies got redirected to "higher priority" stores.

i haven't used tp since the pandemic. I tried a bidet and I never went back

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

Bidets are for washing and tp is for drying.

[–] palmtrees2309@lemm.ee 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Just get a bidet. if you are feeling fancy, get that one like those in japan. You will be converted.

If you got electric issues, get a spray jet.

[–] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Where do they keep it all? How much did they buy actually?

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

A few assholes bought as much TP as they could, also hand sanitizer and other items, to hoard and sell at exorbitant prices to make a profit off the pandemic. They made their homes and apartments into little warehouses.

[–] Aimeeloulm@feddit.uk 2 points 5 days ago

I'm not sure how much we brought, but majority if it's still stored in our garage, don't seem to be running out of it anytime soon XD

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Shockingly I am one of them.

But we didn’t hoard.

My ex used to work at a bjs and there was a sale the summer before lockdown AND we’d just bought a house so she had bought like 10 packs…. Had to fill all our empty storage.

Anyways.

October 2024 I purchased my first toilet paper again since 2019.

I guess technically we didn’t buy any DURING the pandemic…

[–] zlatiah@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

No joke but this somewhat describes me... I never hoarded TP, but I tend to buy toilet paper in large quantities (too lazy to go to grocery store) anyway, so I think my COVID stash lasted longer than my apartment at that time... I think I only used up all of it 2-3 years later. My then-roommate even took half of my stash when he moved out since I had so much lol

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago

When times are tough, you've gotta use both sides.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Some appear to be holding their shit in until the next pandemic. Or to use it as a projectile weapon in the Mad Max apocalypse.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 6 days ago

When some finally got back in stock we got some but it was awful quality. We got some better stuff a little bit later. So we have a box of single ply in our garage still lol. I can't imagine using it now though, probably covered in cobwebs and dust.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago

Buying in bulk is a guaranteed return on investment, though. (And that's especially true in the Donald tariff era.)

Now imagine having to go through a roll a day

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I would need an entire room full.

How little are y'all shitting?

Bidet users stocked up on TP during the pandemic?

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You take a single sheet to dab water / double-check cleanliness.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Buddy you might want to go back and read all these comments in context real fast cuz you're missing something here.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 0 points 5 days ago

I reread the thread and I still don't get it.

Pretty clearly the post wasn't about bidet users, because bidet users taking a long time to use TP isn't noteworthy at all, so people replying that they use bidets is deadly boring.

What other context would I be missing?

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 58 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you bought today, still during pandemic.

[–] state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Covid is endemic now. Is there another pandemic?

[–] Lemming6969@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Correct despite downvotes

[–] XnxCuX@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Maybe im overthinking it, but couldn't it have always been deemed endemic? I googled ts and cant grasp it 😂

It's endemic when it's just always there, like the common flu. Even if the numbers fluctuate. When it first appears and spreads across borders it's pandemic.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 58 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Jokes on them, I stopped shitting years ago. Now I'm always full of shit

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 40 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

No joke, I once spent an entire day feeling like I was straight up gonna die. I thought I had appendicitis or something but the pain was nowhere near my appendix. Either way it kept me laying prone waiting for death for like 8-12 hours before I finally went to the hospital.

So I go the hospital, they run all these tests, Im pretty sure they gave me some kind of drugs in the IV without fully telling me because I remember feeling a lot better and having to try hard not to giggle when they wheeled me around to get scanned.

So they do all this stuff, and then finally the doctor comes in and tells me Im just full of shit. Like, literally, I was massively constipated and that was the entire issue.

I got back home and was in a ton of pain again, so I drank an entire bottle of Miralax and then pooped my entire soul and most of my organs out the next morning. Im talkin ass-chaffing farts

[–] ButteredMonkey@lemmy.world 19 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Thank you Internet stranger for the gift of your amusing poop-a-saurous story. It was just what I needed. 👍

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

It was pooposterous

[–] SidewaysHighways@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

best of lemmy

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago

I love a happy ending.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

When I was a child I also had this, but for three days.

None of you can imagine the relief I felt when that enema worked. Hardest part was keeping everything in for 5 minutes.
