There's misplaced, lost, and I put it somewhere safe.

The last one is the most dangerous and you'll never see it again.

I specifically placed that item in a location so secret, even I don't know where it is.

It’s just the worst when you’re not sure which situation you’re looking at, and you’re not sure if you should be worried yet. Namely because you can’t quite remember if the last time you saw said object was really the last time you saw it, after suddenly remembering that you hadn’t seen it in a while.

I don’t know how to explain it, but you can feel the difference. If it’s lost, you know it, but if you’ve misplaced it, it still feels nearby.

For me its you know that your memory knows where its at but you are just failing to recall that specific memory, but for some reason you can pull up all the other memories of where you have seen it before and so you have go looking in all those places to find something to recall it. Another similar thing is when I am using my phone i want to do something go to switch over to it, forget and i will go back to what i was doing before and look for what i was looking at the time when i had the thought and i instantly remember.

"Wait I remember borrowing that to somebody, but who was it again?" - it's gone

"I swear I saw it yesterday" - search as long as you want, you will find it by accident mere moments after you no longer need it

"I remember I put that in a specific place for safekeeping" - will resurface when you move

Since when did "borrow" start meaning "lend?"

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

people confuse those two a lot. especially non-native speakers who's languages have one word for borrow and lend

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm a native speaker I'm just dumb

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

maybe your knowledge of german corrupted you then? 😭 i see the .de in your instance name

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I'm German but became fluent in English before school so I consider myself native. Anyway what I'm trying to say is I'm really good at being bad in two languages at the same time

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

that is so fair. i'm polish and learnt english the same way natives do, so i consider myself near native, and i also suck at both of my langauges

Is this truly an ADHD thing though?

[–] rhombus@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

The ADHD part is doing it constantly. Everyone loses stuff some times, ADHD people lose stuff all the time.

That’s the part that irks me when people pull the “oh but I do that so it’s not ADHD”. The difference isn’t if it does or doesn’t happen, it’s how often it happens and how much it impacts your day to day life.

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The real ADHD thing is to make ADHD your entire personality and assume that every single thing you do is only because of ADHD.

jokes aside I am definitely far more likely to misplace items than most people I know

[–] Kamsaa@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Lol, at first I thought "oh this is going to be a mean and not very inclusive comment", I'm glad it wasn't!

Thanks for clarifying, I don't know anyone with ADHD (at least diagnosed) so this helps me understand ADHD !

[–] riskiedingo@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I haven’t lost it. I just can’t find it- there’s a difference.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 1 points 12 hours ago

The difference is my willingness to buy a new one.

[–] jared@mander.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

"I know I saw it somewhere"

[–] letsgo@lemm.ee 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Having ADHD isn't a prerequisite to that; I don't, and also know the difference.

[–] higgsboson@dubvee.org 1 points 1 day ago

No one said it was a prerequisite. R1
