Obligatory "Six companies that own all the media infographic" [open in new tab]:

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I count only three?

Also wow, the top company that no-one ever heard of owned by the guy no-one ever heard of.

(Apply "almost" where needed)

[–] balderdash9@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 month ago

My mistake:

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I don’t have time to look it up, but his wealth is also listed as net worth, not income, so I suspect that might be a private company, which would explain why we haven’t heard as much about him.

Edit: I have time now and yes, it’s privately owned.

Edit 2: but maybe it’s about to be merged into a public company? I’m not sure, this is pretty nebulous, possibly because it hasn’t been finalized yet.

How tricky would it be To create a browser extension that notified you if you visit a site owned by these big6 (and more) and which one?

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's...a lot of domains.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The database seems like the biggest hurdle indeed.

I am considering about a community maintained dataset that starts with the most major sites and companies and expands from there.

I would not be able to do this alone but we could create a lemmy place to start something like it.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 1 month ago

I don't see why not. Maybe a community for it will interest potential contributors to the project!

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You could just assume that whatever you see is propaganda.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Not even Lemmy is an exception there but wouldn’t it be nice to know whos propaganda we are consuming?

Unless your advocating to cut the cable and live of grid we still have to visit sites.

I talking beyond the scope of media also. I would like to know if a dogfood site is actually nestle or not.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I have a cat and I try not to buy Purina, because it's owned by Nestle.

But realistically, there's no way you can bring down a company as big as Nestle or Musk by not buying from them.

I mean, has Musk lost anything if he only goes down to a mere $1 billion?

imho

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

True

Its less about actively bringing them down and more about actively not being a part of the problem by supporting slightly more ethical alternatives.

The Rich have more money then they could ever dream of spending, thats why its absurd that money is a motivator. Its an addiction to egomania and authoritarian power that drives their actions.

Thanks!

Some of these names turn my stomach. Well, at least one: Rupert Murdoch. He's a monster.

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago

one of those guys is not the fuck like the others

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What if I don't believe that the media controls the people, and rather, that our culture is really just this genuinely sickened and backwards?

[–] deaf_fish@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The media creates the culture.

[–] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is deeper than that. If there was no media we would still have culture. People would tell stories and copy and adapt each others mannerisms and fashion. Local culture would be much stronger and vary a lot more.

What media does is control these elements by distracting us and occupying our attention with curated topics and lines of thinking.

[–] deaf_fish@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, I agree. But in our current climate we have media and not a whole lot of social interaction. So for all intents and purposes currently media is driving our culture.

[–] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, nobody has any agency except the powerful.

How manichaean of you.

[–] deaf_fish@lemm.ee 0 points 4 weeks ago

Wow, that is a jump. I'm curious, how did you get here from my comment?

[–] Turret3857 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I feel like theres lesser of the ladder than the former. People like to be told what to think. I really dont understand it myself, but something about big brother telling you what to think is somehow comforting for some people. Ive seen the behavior from multiple family members, just parroting what their media source of choice is saying.

😔 foiled again

[–] plyth@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Knowledge can be a status symbol like clothing. People show what they know if they can signal their status with it.

In that form, knowledge is not verified by own thoughts. The value of the knowledge comes from the reputation of the source and the value of the people who agree with it.

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Everyone thinks they are an above average driver.

[–] vodka@lemm.ee 13 points 1 month ago

I know I am above average.

Still doesn't make me a good driver.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Not me. I always think I did something wrong when I hear a honk anywhere nearby.

I don't. Don't even got a licence 😅

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I believe I'm being controlled by Lemmy.

[–] moody@lemmings.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You are being programmed to be more compassionate. What a shame!

I know I'm being controlled by Lemmy. I've been using Linux for the past six months.

[–] OmegaLemmy@discuss.online 4 points 4 weeks ago

there's also people who hate racism, yet unknowingly act racist and become extremely defensive when called out, just because they don't consider themselves as racist

[–] serendepity@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Good point, meme-that’s-trying-to-control-me!

[–] DeusUmbra@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

I don't believe I am controlled by the media, instead I am controlled by my emotions and biases.
