On Anime

While Anime is a beloved animation style with a rich history and extensive following, our focus here leans towards other forms of animation. This is due to the immense popularity of Anime in online spaces, which is amply covered by other dedicated communities.

This doesn't mean that Anime related conversation is not allowed here, only that it's not our focus. For a dedicated Anime instance, check out ani.social.

On Technical Discussion

While our primary goal is to discuss animated media, conversations about animation techniques and the process of creating animation are also welcome. Whether you're a budding animator seeking to understand more about the industry, or a seasoned professional sharing your experiences, you're welcome here.

My daughter was introduced to TOH by her girlfriend and is obsessed. Problem is there isn't very much of it and she's watching it again and again on repeat. Does anyone know of anything she could watch to switch it up that has a similar vibe?

Sumarizing recommendations from others, and adding a few deeper cuts...

  • Hilda (start here)
  • Amphibia
  • Steven Universe
  • Gravity Falls
  • Infinity Train
  • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
  • Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
  • Craig of the Creek
  • Centaurworld
  • Over the Garden Wall
  • Home Movies

I have watched everything except the last 2 and Craig of the creek. All good shows.

Second this.

I see Hilda and that series is way underrated, and one of my friends is also obsessed about Gravity Falls, and I've heard only good things about it.

Steven Universe starts of targeted at very young children but in the matter of a season or something it grows into a cartoon with themes like lgbtq, social relationships, divorce and more. It's brilliant and Rebecca Sugar is a genius for writing it.

She-Ra feels a bit more Disney to me for some reason but it's a good show as well.

Man there's so many gems in there

And I haven't watched anything but the last two and they are good, so I'd say this list is pretty damned good all around.

Wolfboy and the everything factory needs to be on this list. Same mostly cute and light (even when heavy) vibe with super enjoyable characters and magic.

It should be #2 in the list imho.

Niko and the sword of light is a pretty good fit too but it’s more adventure-type.

Might be too obvious but The Owl House was largely inspired by Adventure Time. There are some spinoffs like Fiona and Cake that are well received

I just finished She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and was thinking about how similar it was to Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Owl House. 100% recommend, you will not regret. Available on Netflix, or y'know 🏴‍☠️

The Owl House is such a great show. My 7yo boy is really into it. I've been showing him a lot of variety over the last year (everything from Amphibia to Yuu Yuu Hakusho) and TOH has been a stand out.

Edit: consider Infinity Train, Moomin, or Invader Zim.

As others have said, Gravity Falls! I'd also like to suggest Bob's Burgers and We Bare Bears.

One that isn't mentioned here, but is also amazing - Star Vs. The Forces of Evil

[–] Freshparsnip@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

I've heard that Amphibia is similar and is implied to take place in the same universe

Thanks for all your answers. Some of them look very promising. I'll dig out my eye patch and investigate further.
