Text: Allows you to determine whether to limit CPUID maximum value. Set this to enabled for legacy operating systems such as Linux or Unix.

Found this in the BIOS of a Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H mobo.

At least there’s a help text. All my BIOS ever says is:

Enable Intel foobargnarfthingy. Enables the Intel foobargnarfthingy.

Your bios has options? I still cant access my nvme drive because hp doesnt let you change the bios to use ahci

I have such a shitty BIOS. It is pain, because the option ought to be there, but the software is so incredibly basic that it exposes virtually no useful settings outside of time and date + boot order.

That's still help text, even if it isn't very helpful. I was installing to an older laptop recently that had no help for most BIOS options at all, plus I found a forum post on the manufacturer's website indicating that even they had no documentation for those settings. (Naturally, it was made by HP.)

Obviously you're supposed to use a modern OS like GNU/Hurd

'But you have heard of me?'

So offended! It's GNU/Linux.

[–] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 12 points 1 month ago

Well. Not anymore. It's soon be uutils/Linux.

I mean, LTS kernels exist. Some of the most popular Linux Distros in the enterprise should be considered legacy.

Absolutely. If it's not exposed outside the LAN, and it's serving some service internally that's functioning perfectly well, there's little reason to upgrade.

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 6 points 1 month ago

It’s a modern OS, but it’s legacy too.

It's just their way of saying

"You need to keep your bloated system updated, which will require you to buy new hardware every few years. Anything else is old."
