I'm finding it hard to find concise info on what's been going on in/around Iran. Can anyone throw a brief timeline of events for me? Pretty pretty please?

Edi: thanks for all the comments and answers, appreciate it!

I went back through Wikipedia's current events from June 2025 and put together a rough timeline:

  • 2025-06-12: IAEA declares Iran in breach of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations.
  • 2025-06-13: Israel attacks Iran targeting nuclear facilities and senior government officials. Iran retaliates with missles and drones.
  • 2025-06-17: Donald Trump calls for Iran's unconditional surrender. Iran refuses.
  • 2025-06-22: The US announces it has bombed multiple nuclear facilities in Iran -- particularly including sites at Fordow and Natanz which are deep underground -- using its unusual ~30000 pound (~12000 kg) Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs. Iran retaliates by firing missles at a US base in Qatar and by voting to close the Strait of Hormuz.
  • 2025-06-24: The US and Qatar mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Donald Trump says Israel and Iran "don't know what the fuck they are doing" as the countries continue fighting initially. It seems to be holding so far after a rocky start though?

I'd also add the bit in the middle where trump publicly tweets that they're going to bomb the nuclear facilities and ends up doing very little damage as Iran had plenty of time to casually move their nuclear supplies off site.

This upsets the shriveled tangerine.

Really appreciate you doing this for me.

I feel bit dumb I didn't think to check wiki. But I also realize wiki didn't come up in my searches and how that's starting to concern me

Unmentioned so far: Netanyahu’s government coalition was about to topple, so this war was a dodge of the corruption charges hanging over him if he leaves, and a trade with the other parties to stay in power. One of the coalition member parties had threatened to drop out over conscription of a previously exempt religious sect, and it had become time-sensitive due to a judicial order. The attack on Iran happened within a day.

The court has no obligation to believe netenyaho and keep delaying court sessions

I live in Iran myself and even I ain't got a clue what's going on. I'm 100% sure the information we need to understand what's happened isn't public.

Hope you the people end up with some sanity from all of this going on. It's mind boggling to me, a nobody from Canada, how Israel has been acting. I understand it's not anything new from their ambitions , but man how they are choosing to act is insane to me

Here we have Israel, a bully and murderer who has realised that no-one is willing to do anything to stop its rampages. Israel doesn't like Palestine. Israel doesn't like Lebanon. Israel doesn't like Iran. Never has. Probably never will.

Israel, overconfident, backed by the US, and with a stockpile of bombs just sitting there doing nothing, decides that this would be a perfect time to attack anyone and everyone else it doesn't like. What were those other two countries on the list again? Oh yeah. Lebanon and Iran.

What's that, Iran's pretty big and people might take more notice? Got to have a not at all flimsy excuse! How about "weapons of mass destruction"! That worked fine when the US wanted to go into Iraq. Might as well get some use out of it. We won't use that phrase though, that would be too obvious.

So "Iran has nukes. Honest, guv. Got to blow them up before they do that to us. Definitely."

Iran has been a loud chihuahua for a long time and wants to destroy Israel for legacy reasons. In order to save face, every now and then they boost something but they’re careful to not actually kill anyone, especially Americans. Israel finally got sick of it and shoot rockets at Tehran and Irans nuclear facilities, because they were getting dangerously close to making a nuclear bomb. Iran retaliated by shooting rockets at Israel. Trump wanted to save face and threw bombs on a nuclear facility, claiming they’re destroyed. This is not confirmed by the international nuclear committee. Iran retaliated by shooting rockets at U.S. bases in Qatar and Iraq, being careful not to kill any U.S. citizens. Trump then suddenly said please ceasefire, and both nations declared victory for themselves and stopped shooting rockets at each other.

Edit: these replies are partially BONKERS. Never expected such responses on lemmy.

Iran has been "developing nuclear weapons" for 30 years. They're strangely bad at it.

Or maybe it's been the go to excuse for western powers to swing their dick around so fcking long it automatically smells like bullshit

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Hum, no. They are "dangerously close" to making them for 30 years... Actually "a week away" from making them.

They have actually been working on them for 60 years. IMO, it looks like that some 20 years ago, the Iran leadership decided to solve all of the hard problems and stop there so they can move fast if they need to.

Israel has been claiming they are "a week away" from having the bomb for 30 years. They have been working on a bomb for 60 years, since the US worked with them to start their nuclear project.

Some 20 years ago they got in a situation where it would actually take a couple of months to make a bomb. They seem to have stopped there on purpose.

Is that the part that was confusing?

[–] littleomid@feddit.org -3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They are strangely bad at it, and they have to keep it as hidden as possible. From the people of Iran and from the international governments.

I’m biased against every single of these countries. Iran, Israel and US are all being equally stupid and almost equally evil.

Same. There are no winners in war, only comparisons of loss.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 2 days ago

Too true. It's depressing that this is the world we're living in.

[–] land@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

BS. It’s all about the “Greater Israel” project. Iran is the only country that can stand in the way of Israel because Iran also falls within the map of Greater Israel. ISRAEL IS AN ILLEGAL STATE. Satanyahu said the same thing about Iraq, and the US turned into a hungry dog that killed over 1 million innocent people. The Iranian regime isn’t good either, but you’re literally repeating the exact same lines as the war criminal Satanyah

[–] littleomid@feddit.org -3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You’re not biased at all, are you. I don’t care how evil Israel’s government is. Iran’s government is exactly as evil, if not more evil.

[–] land@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

You must be the spokesperson for the United States of Israel. Ignoring a live-broadcasted genocide just to spread your hatred for Iran. No one is claiming the Iranian regime is good. But nothing is worse than the terrorist state of Israel.

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Shut up pro occupation , pro genonocide feddit.org user

Is iran using people as human shield? Is iran comitting a genocide, is iran opening aid center for 1 hour and keep shooting at starved people seeking food? Iran is evil but the level of evilness is a lot less. Only nazi is worst

[–] sprack@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

DW just did an excellent 2 part documentary summarizing the conflict. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1x5psFk9io

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I watched both parts, though it's not the current situation that I was trying to figure out, it was good information to see

Iran is arming resistance groups who attack israel when israel increase violence against palestinians killing them, arresting them ,torturing them , demolish their homes.

Israel used the excuse of iran being close to building nukes within few months for 30 years and the end of negociation with Trump, so they destroy iran helping resistance once for all. American also wanted a coup so they control iran ressources and using it as a bargaining power against rivals china and russia
