EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN INITIATED

[–] Hoimo@ani.social 5 points 4 days ago

This always (and only) happens to me in big company meetings and it's really hard to get out of those or to find a coping mechanism that would be socially acceptable. So last time I kinda freaked out right before I reached the assembly room, grabbed my stuff and went home. I don't even think anyone noticed, everyone goes home right after anyway.

I'm in this picture and I don't like it 🐧

That's why I always have ear plugs and sunglasses with me. You never know!

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 5 points 6 days ago (3 children)

That always fills me with anxiety because then I get asked why I'm wearing shades inside.

They're prescription doesn't seem to cut it anymore

Just point to your head and say headache. Some people will offer different pain killers, and you can shit that down with "I just took my meds, now I just need to wait for it to kick in.".

That's a REALLY good idea. I do get migraines and I never thought of using those for that either. Thanks!

~~I'm not autistic (that I know of)~~ (Edit: Just realized this is in the ADHD com not the autism com. No idea why I thought that. I do actually have ADHD) but I do have issues with light sensitivity so I'll often wear sunglasses inside bright buildings. If anyone asks I just tell them my eyes are extra sensitive to light. Nobody's really said anything about it after that. Most people honestly DGAF about what you're doing, they're just curious and sating that curiosity is enough. Those that do actually care and would make a stink over nothing are relatively rare and aren't worth your time or attention.

I don't know if you feel comfortable with that, but I am pretty open when it comes to my diagnosis.

If I'm asked something like this, I'm usually straight forward about my coping mechanisms.
I have autistic traits and I wear earplugs because I'm very sensitive to noise or wear sunglasses because I can't handle the light right now, etc.

Most of the time it's a "oh okay, makes sense" kind of answer, sometimes I get asked more question about it.

The reason I wear shades is so I can close my eyes and not get distracted by every little movement.

That's when the earplugs go in.

My wife puts on her meta raybans and listens to soft music to relax. This is so she doesn't look like she is disconnected too much with normal headphones.

Wait. Maybe we’re all from the mirror universe…

I now wear a baseball cap and it’s wonderful social armor.

[–] malle_yeno@pawb.social 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Could you elaborate? Never heard of using a baseball cap like this and would love some social armour haha

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

The last couple of places I’ve lived for about the last 10 years, baseball caps were not really popular. Up here it’s a lot more rural and like 90% of men wear them. So I wear one too now, and I blend in and nobody questions it.

Try going to a DonQuijote in Japan. Now that is sensory overload.

[–] Hoimo@ani.social 1 points 4 days ago

I really enjoy the Donki, it's just cramped enough to make cozy nooks for me to hide between the Pikachu bath towels and the Love Live soap dispensers.
