Wait wait wait. They finally went full width with that goddamn camera bump, a move that could radically improve the physical user experience by finally allowing this thing to rest evenly on a flat surface. Then, they put another set of camera bumps on the camera bump to ensure that it never does this. Honestly, this is like an elaborate, slow rolling practical joke at this point.

A camera bump in a camera bump is definitely a choice.

Yo dawg….

[–] Etnaphele@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

The lenses already protruded like this. They use more real estate inside the device now, though, and it rolls less than before. An improvement is there :)

So they went back to aluminum eh? The cheaper an weaker material is going bring the cost down, right? Right?

[–] Etnaphele@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

Titanium was always a bad choice for thermals. Now they have the Air as the princess phone and the Pros look designed to perform not to look, seems like.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 weeks ago

The metal frame is a tiny fraction of the overall cost.

Aluminium is much lighter than titanium, so these phones will at least be lighter right?

I'm sorry to have to disappoint you. It keeps getting heavier (and larger).

[–] tahoe@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Somehow they managed to make it heavier, 206g for the 17 Pro vs 199g for the 16 Pro. They’ve been hovering at around 200g for a while though, so as ugly as that phone is, it probably isn’t noticeably heavier than like a 13 Pro

Aluminum was the better material for this use case. All that’s changed is Apple is finally admitting it.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 6 points 4 weeks ago

Whole lot of nothing

I would be more interested in a budget-camera option if it meant price reduction and no bump. If that were also the one not solely marketed in the hands of 22-year-old fashionistas, all the better.

We have the same complaint lol. I’d buy the base iPhone if it had the same processing power as the Pro, and that’s exactly what I did with the 12 generation.

[–] Etnaphele@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

Orange Pro instant buy. Those cameras are really promising, battery life looks to be impressive and thermals well managed. My iPhone XS can retire peacefully.

I upgraded to a 16 Pro Max from an XS Max last year, and this announcement is really ensuring that I made the correct decision. It looks like a fine phone, but the cameras and battery life and speed of the 16 pro max are already insane.

I’m waiting for a watch announcement though, I’d love to finally upgrade my Series 0 that I’ve had forEVER to whatever last year’s model is for cheap.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I’d love to finally upgrade my Series 0

How's the battery life holding up on that?

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

It’s lasts about as long as it does to read this sentence.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Eight hours! Almost ten years!

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

I’m a slow reader :-p

[–] awesomesauce309@midwest.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

Twice as long as my series 0, if I took it out of the junk drawer

[–] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I know the camera bumps have been getting bigger over time, but this is just too much. These are definitely the ugliest iPhones ever released.

[–] TheSaus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 weeks ago

Honestly i kinda like it, looks neat. Not that i’d ever buy one but looks neat.

[–] calisti@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 weeks ago

Amazing construction site optics 🚧🏗️

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

The improved camera and battery life are both very welcome. As a parent, I’ll take all the camera improvements I can get!

Normally I wouldn’t upgrade yet but if I give my teen my 15Pro and pick up a new 17Pro, then migration to USB-C is complete. That also gives the entire family hardware that should support aApples upcoming ai features

I hated the previous Aluminum unibody designs and I hate the new one as well.

[–] blargh513@sh.itjust.works 0 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I will bet this new model does amazing things that have never been seen before! This is going to be super super cool and i am going to wait in a very long line to get one. It will totally be worth it when I can show it off and people will be able to recognize it since it will be very different from all the other models.

[–] wetbeardhairs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't forget to throw away your old model! Smash it on the ground and grind it to pieces with your heel so you can truly experience the exclusivity of a brand new Apple iPhone!

[–] rowdy@piefed.social 2 points 4 weeks ago

I’d recommend trading it in instead. You’ll get more private sale, but Apple still has a pretty competitive trade in model.
