Esterbrook is probably the most prominent, but not comparable to the big boys. Pelikan dominates the entry level school market (I think Germany is one of the very few places where a fountain pen is prescribed at school?), but higher end is a totally different range. Lamy is more consistent with options at all price levels.

FYI: Lamy has recently been bought by Uniball if I’m not mistaken

I feel strange saying it, but ChatGPT could have helped (they state they used it to parse some T&C). I understand the craft going into an article is felt as something personal, but I had the feeling of reading the same paragraph over and over for most of the text. I enjoyed it in the end, but it took me two days to find the time :D

It’s a visibility issue, full wets would only exacerbate the problem… I agree with the frustration but I must admit it makes sense

A better list would be an empty list.

I’ll probably post on !bikewrench@lemmy.world for that ;)

It will take a long while to get everything in place, but will do ;)

Thanks! Nice to know, I think I’ll go for it.

Hi all, I am slowly acquiring components to build up a honest mid-high to high-end road bike to keep for as long as possible. I was waiting for the new Time Scylon frame to become available, but I noticed a pretty deep discount on a Specialized Aethos frame for 1800€ (here). UVP lies at 3800€ (Specialized website).

Apart from the obvious question of taste regarding the color scheme, it looks like a pretty nice offer. The Aethos looks to be made for home mechanics (threaded BB, non-integrated headset, round seat clamp) and ride very well. What are your thoughts? The hypothetical Time Scylon goes for like 5000€, so I would invest much less money. Should I go for it? :)

For wallpapers you don’t need high res, 4K is 8MP and 8K is 32MP (your phone should have 50 Megapixel). I don’t think you would see any improvement with cheap cameras, which will always be more burdensome to bring with you than your phone. If you want to open yourself to big step up in quality, go full frame with good used lenses. Crispness is given by the lens, not the sensor. There are new ~1000€ full frame cameras that are really good: Nikon Z5 II (stills focused) and Canon R8 (faster sensor, better for video but other downsides) are the best value. With used lenses you could keep the kit price pretty low.

That’s true, but electric drivetrains could mix up things a bit. It appears the single motor CLA has rear wheel drive, something that in combustion cars draw a pretty clear line between lower and upper middle middle class. But dimensions, wheel sizes, suspensions and so forth will probably still make all the difference.

Nice! But those three-pointed stars everywhere give me nausea. Can’t they just make something nice without splattering their logo everywhere? It makes it look so cheap (look at the front: 1 huge logo, 1 small above it and 2 in the headlights… I know German car design has left any dignity some years ago but this is pathetic).

Sorry for the futile rant :D

The road to redemption has started

Visma forgot to wax the chains properly, pretty sure!

Just found out about the Kickstarter, thinking of backing it for a jack of all trades flashlight, but I’d like to hear some takes on it :) Any opinion on emitters, lack of UV filter (ZWB something, I can’t remember) and form factor? Quite expensive considering Wurkkos, but packs a lot of features.

Maybe the only good thing coming out of Stellantis these days... an electric Ape! A very typical italian vehicle, although I suppose in Asia such kind of vehicles are much more common? As we see with these traditional european brands, too much effort is put into nostalgia and design elements that bring up the price for nothing (500e, Renault 5 E-Tech, Grande Panda, ID Buzz). I like a good looking car, but if it stretches the price too far out the competition range it's bad.

The 9kW of power are are pretty laughable, but if they are enough to move it around, they are enough.

Interesting new feature of MacOS 13. I'm curious about testing this and see how well audio and video are in sync during calls.

A wonderful stage yesterday with a thrilling finale (highlights video doesn’t do justice to the epic Siena finish)!

EDIT: unfortunately the videos might be geoblocked for some, try the official Giro channel if that’s the case

Coming to Aston Martin in US and Canada for now. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis should follow: let’s see how quick it will actually come to the masses and which current vehicles can get it through software update.

OP reflector, FFL707A from 1800K to 6500K, LumeX1 driver with Anduril 2 but no USB-C charging this time (to minimise size I think, looks really compact).

(Usual banner saying they don't take orders from the US)

Hullo! I need some help with my home-theater/music-listening setup:

  • I'm NOT an audiophile and very limited knowledge of audio, but I would like to find the best compromise with the hardware I'm dealing with
  • speakers: old 2× TSM Puris 400
  • video devices: Apple TV 4K + EPSON projector (wall mounted, away from amp and speakers)
  • current amp: old Technics SU-X70 (I also use a Technics turntable attached to it)
  • current streaming solution: Eve Play as AirPlay 2 receiver for Apple TV

Now, the Eve Play has proven unreliable and the company customer service is terrible. It is also very limited, but I can return it for full refund. I am looking at the following alternatives:

  1. Replace the Eve Play with a Wiim Pro or Pro Plus, while keeping the Technics amp
  2. Replace both the Eve Play and the amp with a Wiim Amp (not Amp Pro as it lacks AirPlay)
  3. Replace my whole audio system with 2× HomePods (pls don't insult me!) or other AirPlay capable speakers (I would give away turntable compatibility this way)

I cannot run cables from my projector to the location of the amp/speakers, so please understand my constraint of having to use AirPlay 2.

Summing up, I'd like to know if:

  • an old amp is still perfectly viable or a Wiim Amp could give any improvements?
  • anyone has experience with a Wiim Pro or Pro Plus, for both music and movies?
  • I think it's worth keeping the speakers: any downsides that I don't know of? I read that speakers don't really get old
  • do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you in advance for any tips!
