Funny how no flags are ever lowered at half-staff for any school shootings.

Cuz you know, children aren't nearly as important as one MAGA pundit...

Why? Charlie Kirk wasn't anything. He was a political grifter. Oh. Nevermind. Birds of a feather. I get it now.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 54 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Even if he never said or did anything, he was a friend of the Trumps - both the elderly orange peel currently staining the White House and his mentally-challenged offspring.

I don't know if you've noticed, but Trump's friends tend to be rather nauseating people.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 88 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Minnesota democrats murdered in their homes: nothing done or said. POS grifter shot while talking about violence: lower the flags, President gives a speech and tweet. America 2025 🫡

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

I think we need to start sell flag pole extenders so we can protest this shit.

[–] Jessica@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Trump has also said he's giving him the presidential medal of freedom

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

At this point the presidential medal of freedom is as important as the Burger King crown.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Worse, at this point it usually means you did something abhorrent.

[–] EmpatheticTeddyBear@lemmy.world 75 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

I will not be lowering my flag in remembrance of the life of an abuser who had helped to cause harm to so many of those that I care about. I will not celebrate his death, but neither will I lose sleep.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 29 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I will not be lowering my flag

Is that an ICE SUV I see in your street or just a random car full of masked people cosplaying?

You're supposed to comply citizen!

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is that an ICE SUV I see in your street or just a random car full of masked people cosplaying?

Those two things are the same.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

No they're not: the cosplayers can't kidnap you and disappear you to a foreign concentration camp.

[–] EmpatheticTeddyBear@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Can't be ICE, I haven't put a magnetic Mexican flag on my car to act as a designated distraction yet...

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

On my to-do list is to get a gigantic flag pole and flag. I so wish I already had one up, just so I could NOT lower it for Kirk.

[–] UnderFreyja@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 weeks ago

I will not celebrate his death

You're a better person than me.

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The American flag only stands for people like Charlie Kirk now… or people who don’t care. The Charlie Kirks lower their flags, the careless leave them up.

You can’t really take the Nazi flag “back” either.

The American flag isn’t the same as it was two generations ago. You just look like a Nazi.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 57 points 3 weeks ago

Fuck MAGA. Good riddance to every last one of those Nazi white power cultists.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 49 points 3 weeks ago

So what about the actual politicians that were gunned down a few month ago. Nothing for them? Oh, because they were democrats, and you endorse it, got it...

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Lowering flags is now about as significant as being Nobel Prize nominated.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago

Or getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I don't understand how Kirk qualifies for this? He was just a modern version of Rush Limbaugh, going even edgier and on other platforms than radio....oh, right, Limbaugh got the fucking Presidential Medal of Freedom, so of course we should lower flags for a fucking Reich wing trolling edgelord.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

He doesn't. But Trump is an enormous piece of shit.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

It's scary to think about action having consequences, if you've been a POS.

So he has to self-sooth, vilify and project.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

This is the same asshole who threw a hissy fit that flags were at half staff for Carter, a far more deserving person than Trump or Kirk could ever dream of being.

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 22 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The NY Times comments about his death are pretty disgusting. Lots of enlightened centrist liberals talking about how inspiring and respectful Kirk was and what a loss it is.

That said, there were only about 100 comments before they locked it. Given the comment counts on big stories like this, I imagine there must've been about 10 or 20 times as many comments that they declined to publish.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah, I just saw a headline from The Economist that made me want to gag: "Charlie Kirk challenged liberals until the day he was murdered"

I mean, what kind of bullshit hagiography is that announcing? I started to read it, and it gets even worse right from the very jump.

Charlie Kirk was an awful douchebag and these paeans being said/written about him already are nauseating and he only just was killed. I suspect it's only going to get worse.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 weeks ago

You should see the glazing Fox gave him. It was wild to read.

But of course not for the kids that got shot today.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Like the new "metals of honor", lowering the flag is now meaningless. Remember the orange rapist/felon ordered the flags at full mast after President Carter's death for his inauguration.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Carter is 100x the President that Taco is. I sure hope that when Taco kicks the bucket, lots of people refuse to lower their flags....he is a total dirtbag and petty AF.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Kirk was a complete scumbag, but flags definitely flew at half-staff for school shootings in the past.

Trump ordered flags at half-staff for Minneapolis

Biden ordered flags at half-staff for Allen, Texas

Also, since this took place at a university, this technically counts as a school shooting. A feverent right-wing agitator dies at a school shooting. Ironic.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 15 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

There were like 80 school shootings in the states last year. The thing should be at half mast until that problem is solved by this logic.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

it should be upside down as a symbol of distress until the 'regime' changes.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 2 points 3 weeks ago

Until the entire system in that country changes.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I think most people already know that flags at half staff is worthless virtue-signalling

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 2 points 3 weeks ago

The meaningless do nothing shit seems to affect a lot more people than it should. Hopefully that’s just bots on the internet making it seem that way.

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Oh yeah, they’ll lower the flags for literally any reason, because the flag has been meaningless for some time.

See also: military cemeteries, and by extension, the military.

Did you know anyone who was honorably discharged can be buried in a military cemetery? Doesn’t matter who. Whether you were a “war hero” (like my grandfathers), you died in war, or if you just partied and fixed trucks in Germany in the sixties (like my stepdad), you can be buried there.

Keep that in mind when someone tries to make them into sacred places. They’re just graveyards, they have no further meaning just because the stones are all the same.

The entire military’s been a scam since the same time period. It’s nice that more people are figuring it out.

[–] Montagge@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago

Does anyone know how to put a flag at 1.5 staff?

I never raise a flag but suddenly want the biggest one at the top of the tallest pole

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago

one of the only times where it’s acceptable to fly an american flag high and proud

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Honestly, I’m glad this happened. Of course I can’t be sure if it’s a good thing - for all we know it could speed up the birth of a tyranny, or WW3 - but something beyond waiting for the next election needs to happen. Kinda typical USA that that something involves guns though.

At some point the constant abuse needs to be met with - well, something.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

brb raising any flags I see higher.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

we got this flag display outside town that lowers to half staff for important shit. they ain't lowering for kirk.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

If the USA lowered flags to half mast every time there was a school shooting you may as well just cut off the top half of the flag pole. It'll never get used.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 4 points 3 weeks ago

America just got its Horst Wessel.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe a posthumous Medal of Feces

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Air Force 2 went and picked up his body. They already had a response ready immediately after his death. A long range sniper shot with no one found immediately. At this point it is looking like this was an assassination by the current administration.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

Couldn't have happened to a bigger headed man

[–] Zier@fedia.io 3 points 3 weeks ago

Once children leave the womb, they are target practice and slave laborers. Republicans have never valued life. They are part of a violent hateful cult which is based in a naive & non-scientific culture that is 2000 years old.

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

It’s just rhetoric and grandstanding designed to feed his army of anal leeches that mindlessly feed on his bloated science-defying animated carcass.

[–] badelf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

I don't understand why children aren't important - every child lost is one less the asshole can rape. He should care, right?
