MODERATORS

State Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs’ refusal to back socialist Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral bid is turning the party’s ideological rift into a full-blown crater — as lefties call on the longtime boss to resign and moderates hail his “common sense” take.

Moderate mayoral candidates Eric Adams, the incumbent, and Andrew Cuomo, the former thrice-elected Democratic governor, were among those praising Jacobs on Friday for standing up to Mamdani’s radical views.

But support from the pair – who are Dems running as independents – was arguably lost in the progressive blowback against Jacobs for bucking newfound Mamdani backer Gov. Kathy Hochul and failing to endorse the party’s nominee in the nation’s largest city.

“Disgraceful. The Chair of the Democratic Party refusing to support the candidate clearly selected by the voters of the Democratic Party,” state Sen. Michael Gianaris, a progressive, posted on X “If he won’t perform that most basic responsibility of a party leader, what exactly is he doing over there?”

Describing Adams and Cuomo who are now both openly allies of Donald Trump as moderates is a fucking decision.

[–] miked@piefed.social 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

When I read that I immediately checked the source.

NY Post. Figures.

"They haven't stated that trans people should be hunted in the streets like dogs, that's centrist"

I mean, being allies of the far right is what we've come to expect from moderates.

  • Eric Adams
  • Sucking up to El Taco since people started making noise about his corruption
  • "Moderate"

Yeah, okay, whatever you say, corporate stooge.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Seriously, I was like "someone who was on morning TV talking live about how he's in a corrupt quid pro quo deal with the MAGA feds passes off as 'moderate' these days?"

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

"moderate" and "corporate stooge" are synonyms.

Vote blue no matter who lol. Especially when you’re not a random citizen but the fucking chairman of the party.

[–] axexrx@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

'Blue no matter who' needed to mean it, and needed to mean the party actually pushing moderate dems into voting for candidates lefter than their own beliefs sometimes for it to work. My whole life ive been forced to vote almost exclusively for centrist candidates, and watched that definition, and the candidates I 'had' to vote for, slip further away from my ideals. Arguably 'blue no matter who needed to mean the party pushing overly liberal candidates on moderates more often than not, to combat the Republicans unwavering push of the Overton window ever right.

But they haven't, and now here we are. Their 'moderate' candidates are now so far right, young lefties can't tell the difference between them and republicans. And a lot of us are giving up. I haven't voted for a politician who shared my ideals in 25 years. And now my choices are between a corporatist and a fascist. I'm no longer thinking about how I can push the window back, or hopefully for a candidate who will march my ideals next time. I didnt vote for KH, I voted against trump, in hopes I could buy myself an extea 4 years before the inevitable point I have to flee the country like my great grandparents fled theirs.

Imo, The democratic party and its elites are at a crossroads. The republican party's buisness model of 'we can push whatever policy and view our corporate donors desire and our constituents will accept it' doesnt work for the DNC. The RNC has a monopoly on those voters. The DNC has to make a hard pivot if they want to survive. They can either start backing politicians like mamandi- who have constituent support, or they can give up and become a permanent minority party; a controlled opposition vote to a permanent right wing regime, with actual liberals unrepresented trying to form a 3rd party, or fleeing the fascist regime.

with actual liberals unrepresented trying to form a 3rd party

The DNC is a party of actual liberals. Liberalism is an ideology of free markets, deregulation and class exploitation. There has never been a time when liberalism was not like this. There's a reason whenever leftists try to make things better they're opposed by liberals tooth and nail, up to and including through cooperation with fascists.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Until the leftists win because their positions are popular and then liberals pretend they're the ones behind it.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 31 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He’s not radical.

Remember, the DNC is as rich as the RNC. Both are donor class supported institutions. Jacob’s is on their leash and going exactly where they lead him because Mamdani wasn’t their pick.

Everything else happening right now, Mamdani not being their pick scares them. If this occurrence spreads, then they lose power, which is why they care so much. It’s not that Mamdani’s views are that radical for a mayor, but his winning is radical. The donor class can’t let that stand.

Any DNC chair is going to be a sycophantic bitch to the donor class. It’s simply where they live. The only difference here is how much it’s being talked about right now.

Its not his views the Democratic Party opposes, its his race.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, it's both.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 2 points 2 weeks ago

I didn’t look it up because I don’t care, but what’s his race? It’s New York City, it’s not exactly a white city.

I need to stop reading news in the morning, it’s depressing.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 weeks ago

"Radical views"? His views would have been mainstream, back in the 70's. The Clinton's really have ruined the party.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Can we not post rightwing rags on c/progressive politics?

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Almost all news sites are rightwing rags.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 2 weeks ago

The NY Post has always been trash

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

The idiocy of this race is mind-boggling.

New York, do you really want Trump's lacky in this position? Are the "moderate" democrats really that fucking stupid?

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 10 points 2 weeks ago

Are the “moderate” democrats really that fucking stupid?

Yes.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 7 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, they are, we know this, we've seen it in display for twenty years.

[–] miked@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

This is Dem party vs the people. The people of NYC have already declared they prefer Mamdani via the primary.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Are the “moderate” democrats really that fucking stupid?

They're that complicit.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

This is the kind of responsible Democratic politicking that got George Santos elected.

[–] yonderbarn@lazysoci.al 11 points 2 weeks ago

His non endorsement is meaningless. NY Post just grasping at straws looking for any type of criticism when the overwhelming majority of NYers and political leaders have already backed Zohran.
