If this means anything to anyone, Who Am I was directed by Baran bo Odar, who also made the Netflix series Dark. I just learned that after making this post.
Cyberpunk
What is Cyberpunk?
Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.
Cyberpunk characteristics include:
- Dystopian city setting where mega-corporations rule
- Full integration of technology into society, featuring cybernetic implants
- Outsider protagonists (punks) who often are very familiar with the technology around them
- Hard boiled detective and film noir vibes and influence
- Themes dabbling in trans-humanism, existentialism, and what it means to be human.

Thanks for reminding me that I never finished Dark. It was difficult to get back into after long breaks between seasons, but I really enjoyed the first season and now need to go back and watch the whole series from the beginning.
One of my favorite TV endings. Very satisfying, in my opinion. But yeah, it's rough to pick back up after a break.
One of the few actually bearable German movies. And it gets the technical details mostly right (relative to the low standard in movie and TV).
Agreed. I actually watched it in the cinema, because I went to see it as a work party.
Would never have gone to a German movie on my own, but I'm glad I did.
I was genuinely surprised how good it is
woah that's pretty cool, so the watch party chat is via voice on discord?
Hey @klu9@piefed.social are you familiar with this watch party? Looks like it's on Friday afternoon.
That's my understanding, yes, it's a voice chat. I haven't actually attended one of their watch parties before though.
very interesting... fwiw Boy's Noise, who did this movie's soundtrack, also did some work on NIN's Tron:Ares soundtrack.
Didn't know about the film (I know this Who Am I?), although I recognize Tom Schilling.
Nor the watch party. I don't do Discord. I haven't gone "full Stallman" ;) but the reason I'm here is to move away from non-free-libre tech.
Added the film to my watchlist. Thanks for the heads up.
Found it on the high seas, will download and give it a try .
