Just dealing with the time change a xouple months ago (most watch party hosts in places that do Daylight Savings, I am not) did my head in. 😂

See you then!

There are some people on the threadiverse who only open up their Mastodon account when it's time for a watch party (as they can't be done with Lemmy/Piefed; not sure about Mbin).

And in the #KungFuSat watch party announcement, someone just posted that they're interested.

So hopefully these announcements are of some utility to some people here. And if you ever feel like joining in, you're more than welcome!

Sorry, I only just saw your reply, so the event is over today. 🙁 But we're here every week! 😁

#KungFuSat is an example of a "bring your own media" watch party. But today the movie was on Youtube worldwide (AFAIK), from the licensed Shaw Brothers Cinema channel. So everyone could watch from the same link.

In one window or device, have the Youtube video.

In another window or device, have Mastodon open and go to the #KungFuSat hashtag.

Then at the appointed time, the host posts on Mastodon "Press Play now!", everyone presses Play and begins watching & commenting.

Here's an example of me doing it all on my laptop with two browser windows side-by-side (there are other ways):

Watch party setup, browser window with Youtube playing film on left, another browser window with Mastodon on right

Next week, the film Code of Silence is not on a worldwide-licensed Youtube channel. In that case, the host (next week @MatthewTitus88) will post a streaming link from another site a few hours before the watch party.

You can use that link or find the movie another way. E.g. DVD/Blu-Ray, paid site (Netflix, Prime etc).

Have a look at the "What's a watch party?" links in the OP for a bit more info.

Why does it show the event in UTC, not my timezone, for the "Disciples" watch party?

I made my first two PieFed "Event" posts, but I don't understand the times being shown.

lznXcfOzLkcqBe9.webp

I manually wrote in the titles the advertised times, which both use US Eastern time. The times of day for the events are 7.5 hours apart (12.00 & 19.30). But PieFed events shows the times of day as 1.5 hours apart (17.00 & 18.30).

Re times I input into PieFed event settings:

  • "Disciples of the 36th Chamber": I did that with the correct time for my local time zone (America/Mexico), 11.00. It shows up for me as 17.00 GMT -6 . (17.00 is the event time in UTC . My UTC offset is -6.)
  • "First Blood": I decided to try America/New York 19.30. It shows up for me as 18.30 GMT-6 . (18.30 is the event time in my local time zone . My UTC offset is -6.)
  1. Why does PieFed show time for one event in UTC, but time for the other in my local time?
  2. Is there a way to make clear what time zone (UTC, local, other) is actually being shown?

For the #FridayThrillerClub watch party on Mastodon, it's the film that kicked off the Rambo juggernaut, First Blood, directed by Ted Kotcheff & starring Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna and Brian Dennehy.

I also notice the event is only shown in the sidebar when viewing the the main community timeline, not when viewing a post.

I wonder how many people bother viewing the community timeline as opposed to just viewing posts that come up in their main PieFed / Lemmy feed.

EDIT: Wait, I see now that it's visible in the sidebar for ALL PieFed! Cool!

My 1st use of the "Event" option in Piefed.

Might start using this from now on when posting about watch parties (instead of "Link" or "Image"). As well as a post in the community timeline, it adds the event to the sidebar & even creates an iCal feed.

1 issue: event time displayed as GMT with offset (in my case, -6) for local time. I wish it displayed local time & UTC.

For the #KungFuSat watch party on Mastodon, it's martial arts comedy Disciples of the 36th Chamber (a.k.a. Disciples of the Master Killer or Master Killer III), a loose sequel to The 36th Chamber and Return to the 36th Chamber, written, choreographed & directed by Lau Kar-leung, and starring Gordon Liu, Hsiao Ho and Lau Kar-leung.

TikTok's European operations aren't US-owned. Altho people should still stay away from it, as TFA demonstrates.

Happy New Year to all B movie fans

Action in Asian cinema has definitely lost to horror in terms of popularity, with the entries in the category this year in particular having shrunk significantly, and the quality deteriorating significantly. Thankfully, however, Sidharta Tata cama up with “Ikatan Darah” a film that can finally be mentioned along “The Raid”, essentially saving the whole category. Japan is continuing with the “Baby Assassins” recipe while Korea will milk Ma Dong-seok as much as possible in the category. Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan are here once more, the latter with one of his best films lately, concluding the highlights of the category.

You're welcome!

It's the movie that inspired the Wu-Tang Clan album , so it should be a UNESCO Global Heritage! 😁

The licensed Shaw Brothers channel on Youtube ~~just~~ uploaded the martial arts classic directed by Lau Kar-leung (credited in English by his name in Mandarin Liu Chia-liang) , starring Gordon Liu & Lo Lieh.

  • 1080p
  • High quality restoration
  • Spoken language: Mandarin
  • Subtitles: English, soft subs. Translation quality: from my brief check, not fantastic but better than many HK kung fu films of the period.
  • I believe the SB channel removes uploads after a period of time, so watch it while you can!

Movie Info

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1977) (少林三十六房), directed by Liu Chia-liang (劉家良), is a legendary martial arts film that follows the journey of Liu Yu-te (Gordon Liu Chia-hui), a young man driven by the need to avenge the death of his family at the hands of the Manchu oppressors. Liu, a former student of the anti-Qing patriot Ho Kuang-han, is forced to flee after his teacher and many students are killed in an attack orchestrated by the Ching authorities. Seeking vengeance and strength, Liu travels to the Shaolin Temple where he begins his arduous training in the famed 35 chambers.

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin received critical acclaim and is widely considered to be one of the greatest kung fu films ever made and a highly influential entry in the genre.

EDIT: Apparently it was uploaded 8 months ago, not sure why my Subscriptions showed it to me today.
And I think what happens with the SB channel might be that after a while, films are moved to the "Golden Vault", i.e. require paid subscription.
