While Kimmel has returned to television, about 23% of U.S. households with televisions were unable to watch, with around 70 ABC affiliates operated by Sinclair and Nexstar still refusing to air the program.

Kimmel pressures Trump, Trump pressures ABC, ABC capitulates, subscribers pressure ABC, ABC capitulates, ABC affiliates revolt, shareholders pressure ABC...

I didn't hear about the affiliates revolting, siding with Trump though, that's an interesting tidbit.

Sinclair has been talked about now and then for a while for their right wingedness. John Oliver has some stuff on them and their control over local media markets.

Nexstar is sucking up as they want federal regulations removed, as they're at the legal limit for how many stations they can own to avoid a media monopoly. They want to merge with another local media company and double their amount of stations, giving them control of the majority of the country's local stations.

This is why these 2 groups are helping to try to take out the president's enemies.

Those might be the best weapon for anyone minimally trained. They have good reach but aren't super heavy. It's hard to lose grip with both hands. And it's obvious how they work and simple to execute -- keep the sharp end away from yourself and close to your enemy.

Stick them with the pointy bit.

It was all about the affiliates. The FCC made threats, Nexstar pre-emoted Kimmel. In response to Nexstar, ABC suspended Kimmel. Then Sinclair piled on, trying to get Kimmel fired.

This has been a huge win for Kimmel, and Free Speech. When he returned, he not only didn't apologize, he went HARD after Brendan Carr and Trump.

Clearly, what happened is that the public outcry against ABC was enormous, and ferocious. They are a broadcast TV network that has had an FCC license as long as there have been FCC licenses. They have a responsibility to uphold the First Amendment, and they folded so fast, and so easily, that those who made that decision should all be fired. And America let them know that in far, far bigger numbers than they expected.

The "talks" that they were having with Kimmel were almost certainly him telling them how this was going to go, because he held ALL the cards. He had the law, the Constitution, and ALL of America on his side. He even had MAGAs on his side. He was negotiating from a position of Ultimate Power. He was going to say whatever he wanted, and they weren't going to have any say in it.

This was a battle between MAGA and Free Speech, and Free Speech won big. It was also a battle between Trump and Kimmel, and Kimmel won big, although I prefer to think of it as TRUMP LOST BAD. He was gloating that he had destroyed Kimmel, and now Kimmel is not only back, he is stronger, and more popular than ever, for having won this battle. It will be far more difficult for Trump to fight this sort of battle again. Now that the other networks have seen it play out, they won't succumb to pressure and threats so easily.

Well. The backlash didn't Just Happen in the USA. It was across a lot of countries.

Somewhat feels good that this actually worked Out.

They're Disney shareholders... They were already revolting.

kinda beyond frustrating that there's more outrage over a comedian who got his start through an absurdly sexist and misogynistic show than there was over the win or lose episode that was already filmed and ready and changed the character into a cis character.

I think the difference there is that there's no evidence of government meddling and intervention. Whereas here, there is.

Well, I've never heard of Win or Lose so it's pretty challenging to get riled up over it.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Man, did you miss the point of The Man Show. It was satire, and the hosts were the joke.

[–] wildncrazyguy138@fedia.io 28 points 1 week ago

Also not where he got his start. Kimmel was on the Win Ben Steins Money game show before The Man Show and radio before that.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

see, you say that, but I don't think you realize how stupid Americans are.

My stepfather did not think it was satire, or a joke. He loved that show and thought the jokes were hilarious. "woman be shopping" etc. I hated that man.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know very well how stupid we are. Just look at The Colbert Report.

But because it wasn’t received as satire doesn’t make it not satire.

Also, what little I know of Adam Carolla these days, I'm not sure it was satire to him.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago

Of the hosts, one grew as a person and the other did the opposite.

I sold off all my Disney shares I've had for years last week. I didn't have a ton, but I suppose every little bit helps.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They were already revolting LONG before that.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

These types have always been revolting ... but now it seems they are rebelling.
