This is like everything. It didn't go from $20 to a reasonable $21. Nope, had to jump friggin 50%. But inflation is 2.9%.
That may be the official inflation rate, but it's not mine.
Sorry. Rant over.
This is truly an insane move. FIFTY PERCENT price hike.
just get rid of the damn consoles while you're at it.
Yup GOG is the only store you can actually buy games from and not merely renting them.
They’re working on that.
Fitgirl let's you keep them forever
Also gone today (Oct 1, 2025) is the ability to redeem Game Pass on Microsoft Rewards. Now you have to redeem a Microsoft or XBox gift card and purchase your Game Pass subscription for the current pricing
I'm done. This will be my last month of GamePass. The value just isn't there for me anymore. I don't play enough games to justify the new price. The few games I do play I'm going to pick up used on ebay and just go that route. I'll stick with my PC and my Xbox will slowly wither into a media center because Microsoft wants to squeeze blood from a stone with their customers.
Spent a trillion dollars buying Activision Blizzard, laid off a ton of employees and killed studios, two price hikes on the console that is 3 or 4 years old, and now a GamePass price hike.
No. I'm done. Fuck that. There's nothing I can do about everything else getting more expensive like groceries and gas. But this? I can absolutely do something about this.
Edit: Oh, I forgot about them killing the rewards program too. Just murdering any type of value prospect for those of us who don't want to spend every dime we have on entertainment. Yeah, fuck off with this money grubbing bullshit. Simultaneously making record profits but screwing over employees, studios, and customers all at the same time. No wonder they're giving up on hardware. We haven't had a decent first-party game this entire console cycle.
This was always the plan. A low price for unlimited games to choke out smaller studios and competitors and once they control more of the market, raise prices.
I’ve been rocking GP Ultimate forever, and have always talked it up to people as one of the best deals in gaming. That’s been getting harder recently, especially at the $20 price point, and a 50% bump just killed it for me. Canceled my subscription; hopefully MS learns something from this (they won’t)
I downgraded to gamepass PC for now. I would have cancelled entirely, but my kids also use it, so we do get some value out of it. My kids only use it on PC anyway, but I'll miss the cloud streaming. Eventually I'll drop it altogether and most likely this generation will be my last console of any kind.
I have been wanting to dial back both me and my son's gaming a little anyways. Being honest with myself calls this a net positive. I'll likely never stop gaming, but Microsoft doesn't seem to want to be part of the party anymore.
Have you ever witnessed a subscription getting cheaper over time? Such a trap.
I would be fine with that fact if and only if they increase prices only when the service provided in the subscription increases or the increase is just adjusting for inflation.
But since we are talking about unchecked capitalism, yes, you are right.
I promise an executive at microsoft is getting a massive bonus this year once they see the earnings increase for this segment that far surpasses the earnings of their xbox hardware was generated.
It's still a decent deal. A buck a day to play unlimited games is hardly unaffordable in the US or Europe, and even most of latin america.
They won't stop with this increase though. Look at the price of cable TV bundles and how so many eagerly signed up for $200-300+/mo. I work with older people who still pay this.
A buck a day to not actually own anything is not a good deal.
Hey man, when I was a kid it was $5 to rent a single game for a week.
It absolutely sucked when the game was terrible, but what are you gonna do?
A buck a day for unlimited play at the arcade is a great deal.
I would say I play a lot of games in my free time, but I don't pay 360 $ equivalent for them. Soooooo many sales on GOG and Steam. The PC is more expensive when you built it, but afterwards it's much cheaper.
I don't like the subscription model at all but I spend way more than $360 in a typical year for games.
I probably only buy at most 2 "full price" games in a year, but I usually pick up at least a game a month, and sometimes even more for cheaper indie stuff. My steam library is old enough to drink in the US and i'm just shy of 1000 things, and I haven't bought anything in a bundle since around reaching ~400.
Most games I pick up I end up spending less than 10 hours on them. Some amount more is 20-40 hours before I drop it and probably never look at it again. A handful of titles I get 100-500 hours, i'd say maybe .5 a year fall into this like Shadow Empire or Age of Wonders 4.
For the indecisive gamer $30/mo is way cheaper than buying a single new release... and since this shit is monthly you just cancel a sub when you're done. I don't really do it much, but I have many friends that do.
Have you ever looked at your gaming spend holistically and seen how much it costs a month between electricity, hardware purchases, software purchases? It's probably way more than $30/mo. I'm not saying it justifies the cost, but odds are with regular GPU refreshes every three years, you're paying something like $20-55/mo for that one part anyway nowadays.
Sure, I never said I'm the standard for everything, but a few things caught my eye in your post:
What I rather wanted to portray is that you can play a lot, even without paying a subscription or buying a lot of games for a lot of money.
A new GPU every 3 years? Yeah, not needed, not what I'm doing and also not a comparison to consoles, because most don't buy a new console/PC part every 3 years. My last PC was build 2020 for a bit more money but I can still use it without problems. So I'm roughly upgrading every 5-7 years.
And also electricity, hardware? Really? We were comparing video game prices, so let's stay at that topic. Of course it costs more to play the video games, since we are not talking about board games.
I went from a 1080ti to a 6800xt, and then a 9070xt. I basically just skip a generation, but the amount of posts from guys out there this year saying "Finally retired my 4090 with my shiny new 5090!" is honestly depressing.
I mentioned the ancillary costs because TCO is relevant. If you're sweating bullets over $10-$30 a month, but you always buy the highest end gear as it releases and are paying $200-$300+ a month on just being able to play stuff... why the hyperfocus on software costs? Couldn't more money be saved by doing something differently?
I know guys who buy all the skins on LoL as they release. I know people with thousands of spend in shit like fortnite. I also know people spending hundreds a month on gacha. Financial literacy is terrible.
Anyway, I look at game sub costs as super cheap, especially compared to 1990s $5 rentals for 5 days. There's a 30 day all you can eat rental option, whether it's worth it to you really depends on you. I don't pay for it shrug
Never did subscribe, looking like the best idea all the time. :)
Seriously though, it's like they are trying to go out of business.
Yes. If fully used day by day, blending Out the shitton of shitty Games.. actually utilizing fortnite Crew. Fair Deal.
Thats one Story. The other one is the price hike Like "Look. We Made it more expensive for you to enjoy".
This extreme move is one of the Most stupid Things this year. But they will get away With It.
For my 2 Cents.. I am patient and can wait for a sale or really want a Game. Otherwise arrrrr. And even without. My backlog is huge and there are a lot of "retro" Games that I still want to Play. So screw them.
Damn. I've still got about a year left from the last time I pre-loaded with voucher codes but this'll probably mark the end of Gamepass for me. If they'd actually increased the value as well as the price instead of shuttering multiple studios and cancelling their games then maybe it'd be worth it but...
Damn people can afford to play games these days?
I haven't had Game Pass in a couple of years; what happened to $5.99/mo? Even at that price it was a ripoff...
