If helping the Gestapo isn't against your policies, then you and your policies SUCK.

Spotify has given him half a billion dollars and a huge platform. It's pretty insane that this music streaming business gives so little to musicians, but it's happy to give unprecedented amounts to this conspiracy festered conservative asshole.

Over a hundred dollars every year to not own music and to definitely fund fascism. Anyone who needs more convincing at this point has already convinced themselves.

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And they don’t pay shit for royalties to all the artists that provide the content

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

Streaming music. What a great deal for nobody but the cynical middlemen.

I'll happily pay for a service that lets me listen to whatever I want, whenever I want, regardless of ownership. I knew that going in to music streaming, and I'm ok with it. If I want to further support an artist, I'll buy tickets to their concerts, merch, and even a signed album.

Yeah well, non-political conveniences were always a lie, and willful complacence is the entire problem.

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah, that is definitely a problem. I cancelled my Spotify account over their CEO's bullshit and switched back to Pandora, since they're the only service that doesn't incorporate videos. Did that for the kids.

I canceled Spotify last month over this and other reasons, and went back to my now-20 year-old Pandora account. They're the only music streaming service that doesn't incorporate videos (yet), which makes it the ideal service for my teenagers as well. Music tickles a very different part of the brain than videos do. Worth it.

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 days ago

How about instead of a thumbs down for the ad, do what I did and cancel.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I cancelled my Spotify subscription when all the Joe Rogan nonsense was going on. Eventually switched to Tidal because I do need streaming music. I listen to hours and hours of music at work and home. Also I like poking around discovering new stuff.

The shuffle and random for Tidal sucks. But I've been happy with it and typically just pick albums or artists I want to dig into before buying something from them.

Tidal

How is music discovery on tidal? I've been looking for an alternate music streamer with good music discovery. I tried apple music, but the discovery on there was utter shit. I mostly listen to Spotify DJ. Anything similar on tidal?

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I used Tidal briefly for a few weeks while trialing various music streaming services for my teenagers. Tidal recommended a lot of good shit based on previous listens. Too bad they incorporate videos though.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think it's ok. They have a daily discovery, but seems to lean towards what you are currently listening to and not your entire music history. The new release channel is decent, lets you hear new music from artists you listen to must. Although "new release" might mean remastered or just added to Tidal, not technically new.

The shuffle is absolutely garbage.

I'm very happy with the sound quality for me. But I'm actually using a setup to utilize it, a DAC and such. It's certainly overkill for an average listener or in the car over cell service. You can download tracks locally to get the highest quality. But not even my snooty ass is doing that for a car ride. Also not all tracks are available in high quality, lots are but don't expect some small indie band to be available in the best quality.

Who the fuck puts likes and dislikes to ads??

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Better question: what kind of psycho gives any ad a thumbs up?

[–] 50shadesofautism@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

At this point I'd love to thumbs down any Ai girlfriend ads on yt shorts and thumbs up literally anything else.

Yeah I could download some shit to go ad free but I keep telling myself I need to watch less anyways and at least on shorts you can just scroll past the ad.

[–] Estiar@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I use the Vanced version right now. I changed all my services to vanced services, so that means YouTube and regrettably YouTube music doesn't work anymore so I had to swap to Spotify. I don't know. I'm not getting ads anyway because of of adblock, and as a result, I don't think they're getting any money from me. You might be able to correct me if I'm wrong

[–] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

If in YTMusic ReVanced you were having issues with the buffering at one minute, changing to a German IP some time ago resolved it. I'm not sure why, though German IPs seem to not have that effect of endless buffering.

Thought of giving it a shout, in case you encountered that issue!

[–] raynethackery@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Canceled subscription and closed account.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There are free services that will rip your playlists into MP3s, in case anyone was wondering.

[–] incompetent@programming.dev 1 points 3 days ago

Which do you suggest?

[–] BCBoy911@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

My Sansa MP3 player doesn't have ads 🤷‍♀️ Skill issue?

Numbs down Spotify

I cancelled Spotify a few months ago when King Gizzard left and brought to my attention how scummy Spotify is. I guess I should've known before but I never really thought about it. I tried Tidal and Deezer for free trials and think I'm sticking with Tidal. The biggest issue I have with the switch is Spotify integration with Amazon Alexa was really good as well as having a PS5 app. I'm not opposed to getting rid of the Alexa but haven't looked much into the market. Are there any good alternatives to Alexa that can play music and do grocery lists since that's mainly all we use it for?

Yes pen and paper and white boards work for notes and lists but they don't play music very well

[–] JandroDelSol@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

literally any notepad app (or pen and paper) works for grocery lists

[–] Taokan@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

There's no subscription fee for a whiteboard. You just gotta remember to take a picture of it before you go to the store.
