Wait is the US more right-wing than China? Isn't China supposed to be an authoritarian hell hole committing genocide and the USA a bastion of freedom, merely helping with a genocide?

[–] lemmeLurk@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Right wing and authoritarian are two different scales. China for sure is môre authoritarian (so far), but overall the us probably has always been more right than China.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, it is always a competition on who can be worse.

[–] fort_burp@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago

Yea, capitalism tends to do that :/

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

They are not becoming more right-wing, they are becoming more pro-Israel.Even Netanyahu said that they are buying TikTok to brainwash the youth with Israeli propaganda.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This was the plan all along. It became enormously influential, so Trump is forcing China to sell it to MAGA and become ANOTHER mouthpiece for the Conservative Propaganda Machine. They did it to Twitter, they did it to Reddit, and now they're going to do it to TikTok.

i peeked over r/space, and there were people complaining about reddit deleting comments, and promoting right wing content, i was thinking your not helping by still using the platform. they were aslo discussing moving to lemmr, but they claim lemmy isnt good enough for one reason or another.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

I like Lemmy, I certain only am freer to speak my mind, although the mods can get pretty weird here, too. Mods are mods, whaddayagonnado?

I miss the multiple massive forums devoted to hobbies and interests. I love guitars and animals, and Lemmy doesn't do either one very well, or any other lifestyle forums, for that matter.

I can scratch my political itch, but not much more.

[–] keyzerSuze@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

what happened to reddit - who bought it ?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

After the Inauguration, Musk visited Spez on February, and they permabanned thousands, perhaps millions of their most active users. I had a 12 year account, nearly a million Karma, and I was permabanned for repeating an opinion that I had posted numerous times without a word from any mod. Trump gets inaugurated, and suddenly it's enough to get me permabanned.

And there were lots of others. The purge gutted Reddit, and left it filled with nothing but bots and trolls.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

i believe musk complained at least 2 occasions, against r/whitepeopletwitter and then in general. which led to more aggressive bans. whats new is that when they temporarily suspended, all your other accounts that participated in the same subs were also banned. plus shadowbans were also increasing as well.

Reddit started deploying thier AI moderation at the same time, which led to shadowbans and regular bans, which wernt appealable in most cases. they used to have a time limit when you were partially sub banned, and it were to wear off, but reddit/AI decided that the previous listed bans are considered ban evasions so all accounts tied to your IP, FINGERPRINT, device were instantly banned.

plus they also upped thier detection of non-propaganda bots ban evaders too(OF fans and link farmers). i have suspicion they largely ignore most propaganda bots. people using anti-detect software/ sophisticated proxies,,,etc.

because these other non-propaganda bots compete with the propaganda bots, and could drown out thier right wing or astroturfing messaging.

[–] jali67@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s incredibly annoying how sensitive Reddit is. You can get banned for the smallest things and even without evidence. I get wanting to foster community and communication but they will stagnate much more wrinkly than other social media apps with their current policies. I don’t see how they’ll keep growing and satisfy shareholders with their banning happy way of doing things. I do not feel like setting up another email and using a different VPN location every time they ban me.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

They didn't use to be that way. I went a decade with no bans or warnings, but the last years got crazy. It fell completely apart after Trump was inaugurated.

I've tried to evade the ban, but they catch up to you eventually. I got a new phone, ditched all the Reddit cookies, signed up on a different network in another state, with a new email, etc..

At first, it took them a few weeks to find me, and they quickly went from a 3 day ban, to a week long ban, to a permanent ban, in quick succession. Then I'd have to do it all over again. The send time took them about a week. The third time took a few days.

The final time, I went to all the trouble, and I was permabanned before I finished my first post. They got my number, they're watching out for me. I'm a Reddit Outlaw, and I couldn't be prouder.

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

its not a tiktok sale and i dont understand why media keeps repeating this. they're licensing the algorithm to a new spun off us company silo'ed from the rest of the world.

also tiktok has been garbage slop forever anyway.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And CCP Military based in Beijing will still be maintaining it, they're only moving it to a Cloud Server.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think you just like saying the word ccp based military because nothing in your comment is correct. It is already hosted on Oracle cloud.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The algorithm used to be contained to a physical location in Beijing, now it's going to be hosted on a server or group of servers in the USA, but the Chinese still administrate it.

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 92 points 3 days ago (1 children)

May? Trump said he's giving his son the CEO job.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

and adding 150million into his bank account/investment portfolio.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

they are hoping to capture the gen-z crowd into leaning right wing before they jump ship to another platform.

[–] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 59 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I thought the nazi propaganda on the internet was annoying 20 years ago when I occasionally bumped into it. Now I'll have to carefully curate the internet to not have to hear it constantly. Jfc.

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Have you tried accommodation, no consequences and tolerance? Works every time toward fascists.

[–] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I've personally got a lot on my plate. In trying to survive. There was a time I was more active, but its a young man's/woman's game.

[–] HeadfullofSoup@kbin.earth 56 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Might? It was pretty clear that the goal of buying it was to turn it in a rightwing propaganda machine

[–] dhhyfddehhfyy4673@fedia.io 8 points 3 days ago

And the catalyst was clearly the nonstop exposure of Israel slaughtering innocents.

[–] suicidaleggroll@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

They explicitly said that the goal of buying it was to turn it into a rightwing propaganda machine

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I mean it already is the biggest superspreader of far right content in Europe and I would assume in the US as well. But please don‘t come with anecdotes about your TikTok experience because it‘s the most personalized content platform so it‘s irrelevant what your feed looks like right now. I‘m saying this because often times at least one TikTok user will rush in to defend the platform with their personal experience whenever this is brought up.

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The political part of my feed is pretty much hard left wing - but when I open the comments the top responders are the most right wing PoS's I've ever seen. Which is so stupid because they'll have max 200 thumbs up while a rational left wing respons will ratio them out of the water

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

thats astroturfing, the troll farms have thousands of bots that can do that at once.

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah I always ignore them because I always assume it's either a bit farm or the algorithm pushing the comments, both of which I wanna discourage, so I don't interact with them.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

the thing is the gop could not control the messaging of tiktok, since it was owned by the CCP, so it was producing content against right wingers, they cant have that. its going to be like how youtube shoves youtube AI slop/right wing every chance they get.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's used to divide but I think it leans the opposite way in north America. The GOP wouldn't have such a hate boner for it if it was pushing the same bullshit they are.

Hard to remember but I think a lot of pro Palestinian vids were on tiktok while the other social media sites were suppressing it when it all started. I only heard of this, I don't have an account.

It's leaning in Europe is well known though.

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Glad I deleted Tik Tok and all it's bullshit

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 38 points 3 days ago

Glad I never had tiktok and all it's bullshit.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

its either thirst traps, or desperate people trying to get clout.

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Soooo any open source tiktok alternatives anyone can recommend?

Edit:

Found Some alternatives on https://alternativeto.net/:

Loops by Pixelfed, Vidzy, Olas (Very new), & Spark.so all seem interesting

[–] egerlach@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If China is okay with the sale that means it's not good for the US. Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

its useful propaganda tool for gen-z users

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Because the Mainlander government see it as a useful tool for which to make the US collapse.

[–] heyWhatsay@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

One more platform goes to shit

[–] Zealousideal_Fox_900@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Brother the only fucking content on that app was stupid people fighting over rights to own trends and people giving fuel to the "LGB without the T" clowns. Just a fucking shitshow of an app. I saw an 11 year old child trying to get a girlfriend on there too.

[–] jali67@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Nah there was and is a lot of good and unique content on there. Of course, the orange cancer and his right wing billionaires taint it.

[–] ohlaph@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The optimism of using the word might is doing some heavy lifting here.

[–] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

It's great for controlling the minds if millions.

[–] keyzerSuze@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

May => will become more right wing. whats the alternative

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

it's almost like every person in tech is clairvoyant...

[–] SouthFresh@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

"The calls are coming from inside the house!"

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago
  1. It was always Right Wing, it was controlled by CCP Military.

  2. It's still controlled by the CCP Military, they're just migrating to a cloud server that Beijing still has full access to.
