20 years holy crap. I remember playing this in the school cafeteria with the crew, was some good gaming

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I, uh, remember playing this at work.

is old

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

I bought a DS with my 2nd paycheck ever, when I still lived with parents and a McJob made me pretty much a millionaire.

It still feels like future tech despite being obsolete AF

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 2 weeks ago

I never took to 7 like I did to this one. Couldn't really tell you why.

I miss how they ditched the more unique character karts for the generic mix and match parts now. Let me race in a backhoe again you cowards!

My favorite Mario Kart game. Shout outs to CTGP Nitro, a romhack that keeps the entire original game intact, but optionally adds dozens of custom tracks.

[–] OmegaMouse@pawb.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Omg what, that's sick

[–] psyc@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Remember having multiple full local sessions going while sitting outside of Best Buy waiting for the Wii launch. The overnight DS sessions ended up being more fun than the Wii launch titles

Remember how you could play this on the local network with anyone who had a Nintendo DS? Only one person needed the game cartridge. So fucking cool.

While you are not wrong, this news displeases me greatly.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Pretty sure the DS came out like 5 years ago. OP is on Crack.

Literally me.

Second time ive been sent a picture of a character from whatever this show is lol

[–] MysticKetchup@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can't say I know what show it's from, I just saved the meme because I also find it relatable

[–] hitstun@feddit.online 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] MysticKetchup@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Thanks, I've only really seen the more common Touhou characters

Funny to think that meme is already 4 years old, eventually it'll be older than the consoles it was referencing when it was made

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I remember it looking better than this screenshot shows

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 weeks ago

because at the time it was impressive and now it's not

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I have played it recently and you may be misremembering. There was one on 3ds too iirc. Might be the one you're thinking of

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

I only see perfection (on a blurry image), don't overlook the tires on motion btw.

[–] SteakSneak@retrolemmy.com 8 points 2 weeks ago

I remember spending so long designing my emblem for online, only to be blown away by what others managed to draw. Let's not forget all the penises🤣

[–] lIlIllIlIIIllIlIlII@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago

This is my second favorite Mk game after the original one. I played a lot online. We organized matches in the IRC. At some point I sold my cart and played with a flash cart and a hacked ROM to play in tracks not available in the legit game. Some players went crazy when they saw it lol

[–] Signtist@bookwyr.me 4 points 1 week ago

I traded my copy of Pokemon Fire Red with a bunch of legitimate shinies to my buddy for this game back in middle school. Worthwhile trade.

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 weeks ago

Was going to downvote this, because i hate those "you're old, feel it! more! MORE! FEEL MORE OLD!" posts.

But then i changed my mind. You know what? Time for the next generation to start feeling the pain. Have fun genZ. or milenials or whatever.

[–] whelk@retrolemmy.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

I loved this level of graphics. Enough for cool 3D stuff that could be nice and smooth, but no expectations for or effort spent on absurd levels of hyper-realism

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

MKDS had the best soundtrack, hands down.

Also the reason I main Daisy on 8 😄

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I didn't like MKDS very much.

I like how they got rid of the left-right bullshit on drifting after it. It's just annoying and achieves nothing. And it's especially bad having to do that on a d-pad.

I also think Wii is the one that really started balancing items a lot more fairly, though 7 and 8 refined it even more.

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I actually enjoy the drifting and was saddened that it was dumbed down in later entries

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Double dash had the best drifting mechanics in the series imo. Really only DS and DD are the only ones who have more than hold a drift long enough for mini turbo as their drifting mechanics

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

I've not played that much in not having a gamecube as a kid. I'll have to give it a good shot one time for sure

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 2 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

You're calling that "dumbed down", but I'd call the old input arbitrary. I don't see the point of hiding a major gameplay mechanic behind a complex input. You don't use a cryptic button combo to jump in a platform game.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Have you SEEN the movement tech in Mario Odyssey?

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have done semi complex move combos with Cappy in SMO, not sure what you consider "the" tech though.

Doesn't matter. It's cool to pull off, but it's not required in any way. And most importantly in the end those combos are not programmed that way, they're a string of independent moves that are directly associated to their button.

I have no idea what is supposed to connect "get a boost" to "rapidly alternate left and right direction buttons while you drift".

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Drifting is also cool to pull off but not required in any way

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Left-right on the D-pad is hardly a complex input. Just about every child managed to discover it. It was one of the few ways they could make Mario Kart a bit more skill based.

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The way to make MK more skill based was to balance item distribution, which they started doing decently after MKDS.

It's not like drifting is automatic in modern MK (well, it is in auto mode, but it's meant for complete beginners and it sucks for anyone who knows how to play). You're still calling all the shots regarding when to drift and for how long. It's just less annoying to do.

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago

It's definitely not cryptic I was like 10 or so when i played that and i figured it out. I think one of the missions tells you how to do it. It also added more agency to how you boost with some risk reward instead of just passively earning boost from drifting.

The best evolution would've been a mix of both. Gain boost passively but speed it up by alternating directions.

I think i bounced off the wii version (didn't own it only played at friends) because i was confused on how drifting worked. Wasn't until i got 8 on the wii u when i realised that alternating directions wasn't needed anymore. 8 is fun, mostly due to track design and the fact it became second nature like riding a bike but i think DS was more actively fun in the moment to moment. Not to mention the mission mode which is a crime it's never returned.

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

i always used peach and apparently she has the worst kart

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Relevant Mastodon post I saw earlier.

Mario Kart 64 best straight up

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world -1 points 2 weeks ago

Wii was great too but yeah 7 missed all the marks.
