I'm old enough to remember the United States as a country that won two World Wars, won a Cold War, went to the moon, and had a reputation - deserved or not - as a shining beacon of freedom and democracy. Respected or feared by the entire world.

Now it's a country run by a paedophile fascist with dementia, elected twice by an equally mentally feeble populace - causing consternation and concern around the world.

Americans should be ashamed of themselves. But of course they aren't because they're not actually capable of feeling shame.

[–] MTZ@lemmy.world 56 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I mean, I'm American. I had nothing at all to do with the state of America now. I have been doing what I can (protesting, good trouble, etc.) to oppose this shit before, during and after the election. I can't really have shame for something that I had absolutely no part in and actively fought against for the past decade. I mean, I feel ashamed for my country and my loved ones, but I feel no personal shame because there are many of us who have actively been trying to undo this shit, no matter how impossible and foolish of a task that sounds like.

Took credit for winning world wars* Decided it won the cold war*

It always has been run by fascist slave owners. Welcome to the real world, where america is and always has been shit stain on the history of the world.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago

I don't necessarily disagree - hence my adding "deserved or not", if you re-read what I wrote.
But regardless of what you think, it had that reputation.

And it doesn't no more.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 11 points 4 days ago

One could make a case for Putin winning the cold war by installing a puppet dictator in the USA. I mean he said he would, and he did. It's pretty impressive, really. Not the stratagem in itself, it's dumb as fuck, but he knew the Americans would be even dumber.

C'mon man, give the US some credit. They helped my home country, China, a lot during the defence against Japanese Imperialism, forced the impeialists to surrender.

[–] bobo1900@startrek.website 6 points 4 days ago

At least they tried to hide it, now they don't.

As for the cold war, if you consider the conflict USA-USSR they clearly won: Russia was, at least at some point, equally powerful to the USA technologically and militarly, what one did first, the other caught up pretty quickly, then the Soviet Government collapsed for various reasons, and they couldn't catch up, now the USA is arguably the most technologically advanced country in the world, in many aspects.

China is catching up, but they are in no way equally capable.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago

Americans should be ashamed of themselves. But of course they aren't because they're not actually capable of feeling shame.

Some of us very much are.

I'm also ashamed of the window lickers that let us get to this point too. We knew what this would bring, and here we are, laughing about the fascist pedophile finding out he took a shot to the mouth while him and his kiddie diddling friends destroy the country.

I hate my fellow Americans.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

the United States as a country that won two World Wars

Contributed to winning two world wars.

The U.S. didn't carry the allies. Soviet and Chinese casualties far outstripped any American ones, and the amount of Indians thrown into the meat grinder on behalf of England during both of the World Wars is barely even mentioned. Then there's civilian casualties. Was the wartime rationing bad? Sure, but it's a piss take compared to Churchill's Famine.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Also I'd like to point out that currently what is considered perhaps the best countries in the world, at least for the average citizen, the Nordics, probably wouldn't be here, especially not in this form, had the Soviets actually managed to come through Karelia.

Which my great-grandpa and uncle & other assorted family gave their lives to prevent. And we were technically fighting the Allies, mind you. (Finland wasn't allied with Axis at any point though, officially. We "merely" cooperated a little, before having to fight the Nazis out of Lappland.)

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Remember, the exceptionalism turned into the fragile ego that contains the shame.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Username checks out. Most Americans aren't on board with this shit and that's pretty clear looking at any polls, we just have enough morons that think voting doesn't matter or who listen to stupid ass propaganda from people pretending the parties are the same.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Most Americans aren’t on board with this shit

They're obviously onboard with different shit, else Trump wouldn't be president. Twice.

As shit goes, I preferred the old-timey one. At least it was dignified.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

Trump is literally president because he got less votes than last time but the left and center chose not to show up because the dumb motherfuckers thought that both sides would be the same (because they either have no ability to think for themselves, or they don't pay any attention). Most might try to make an argument that Gaza are the reason they chose not to vote, but tend to change the topic when you bring up how their choice made the lives of the people in Gaza worse now than they ever were.

I'll agree that the majority didn't care enough to prevent this, but most of us are not onboard for this. Even the ones too stupid to think past the tip of their noses.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Single issue voters have never made any sense to me. I've never seen a political party platform that i agree with 100%. I try to weigh out all the party platforms, how they address different classes, issues, and geopolitics. I try to pick a platform that I think has the most potential to address some major issues with the least amount of things I'd want to protest against.

I will vote for a party that is proposing something I'm strongly against if I think many of their other proposals are great. You can still hit the streets and protest the stuff you disagree with even if you voted for the party proposing it.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

I'm right there with you. To s of people asked me how I could vote for the Democrats when they were being dumb as shit on Gaza as if the only other option in the table was ANY better

I will vote for a party that is proposing something I'm strongly against if I think many of their other proposals are great. You can still hit the streets and protest the stuff you disagree with even if you voted for the party proposing it.

10000% this. So many people on here see a false dichotomy of support the party or protest it, when the real answer is to vote for the least bad party and be out in the streets to make it better.

that turd was polished

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

That's a gross over generalization. I'm plenty ashamed of myself!

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

The Soviets won WW2, and nobody won the Cold War.

Should we keep going? How about the Vietnam war? Wonder why you skipped over that one... Korea? How did that one turn out again?

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 days ago

Nice try Vladimir.

It's called "propaganda". And they're not wrong in that that was the image the USA projected and a lot of the Western world bought - regardless of the merit behind the image.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Soviets didn't do much to help China fight off the imperialists from Japan. The US did.

Then Soviets try to coerce China to join the USSR as essentially a puppet state, used nuclear weapons as a threat to extort resources as "repayment" for the "help" they gave in WW2. Good thing China got the nuke, otherwise Soviets would've invaded.

Trump sucks dick? Oh boy what did I miss today

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 22 points 4 days ago (2 children)

According to one Epstein e-mail, Putin has photos of Trump "sucking off Bubba". What makes the story really amazing though is that there's a nonzero chance that "Bubba" is Bill Clinton.

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Greater than 90% chance. It was Clinton's well-known nickname. What other Bubba might Epstein and Putin have both known? If there was another, the question would have been more specific.

[–] kuhli@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Mark Epstein, who sent the email, came out and said it wasn't clinton though.

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 3 points 3 days ago

That e-mail was sent at 4:32am. Mark was probably coked out of his mind. I wouldn't expect him to remember what he meant.

Was he familiar with Ghislaine's horse?

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

Bubba sounds more like the name you'd give a horse or something. To be fair, I wouldn't put it past a child rapist to also rape animals.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Actually, it's reportedly true that Ghislaine Maxwell owned or owns a horse named Bubba. So maybe Trump did suck off a horse, but I personally hope it was Clinton just because of the damage that would do to MAGA and the GOP.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Someone needs to ask Trump which one it was, at a press briefing.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

"I did not have sexual relations with that Clinton"

Narrator: it was Socks

Someone execute this man. 💀

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The world was a puzzle with one big piece missing, until today.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Well you see, when two men who don't really love each other that much but are willing to party, meet at an Epstein party... Let's say it would make P Diddy blush.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 6 points 4 days ago

Epstein emails

[–] turdcollector69@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

In the Epstein emails someone asked if Putin has pictures of trump blowing Putin.

It's become a meme/phenomenon because fuck trump and it recontextualizes his actions in an extremely funny way. Especially the 2016 campaign

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I thought Hitler having a tiny cock and only one testicle was more commonly known. I heard that shit in 6th or 7th grade, myself.

[–] Coleslaw4145@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I always thought it was one of those made up school rumours that every kid in every corner of the world heard about somehow.

Like that one about Marilyn Manson getting his lower ribs surgically removed.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Check on having heard those rumours ~25 years ago.

[–] Coleslaw4145@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And i bet you're in a completely different part of the world from me.

I went to school in the south west of Ireland in the 90s where internet access was even more of a myth than that rib surgery rumour and i still heard about it.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I mean, same here, in a way. Rural Finnish town in the 90's.

When my big brother first showed me the internet (once in the library as he had reserved an hour for himself) I actually thought it would be like a game or something, and was rather disappointed to see boring HTML sites. Why? Because everyone kept talking about "surfing the net". "Browsing the world wide web" has much more boring connotations, I felt like. (Although back then I didn't speak English so would not have known the phrase, but the equivalent term to "browsing.")

Until my brother showed me how to find guides and cheats for games! GameFAQs.
