I think this is similar to Fetterman's stroke, and it'll take a while before he can communicate normally again. The vague details they give on the show seem to indicate that he's understanding what's happening well (and making them laugh intentionally), which I think is a good sign.

It's most likely a stroke. I think linguistic ability takes a while to recover. His wife and Felix quote tweeted this positively so I'm gonna guess that it being nonsensical isn't a bad sign for his recovery.
