That's great. Am I right in thinking another advantage matrix has over Signal is that with matrix apps you're not required to have a phone number to create the account?

[โ€“] AceSLS@ani.social 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Imo Matrix has the huge advantage of being decentralised.

[โ€“] jlow@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Is it, though? Maybe like Mastodon which is as well in theory but still the vast majority is on .social and I think this is the same with matrix?

Your instance hosts a server with 4k monthly active users: https://tchncs.de/en/matrix

I'm one of them

Not quite.

Matrix for one has lots of independent servers of e.g. militaries. This helps by getting funds into the project and it being tested in real life scenarios.

Also there are lots of small servers that just host communities, they barely interact with each other, but they can and sometimes do.

It's not a deeply interwoven net like Lemmy, but it is decentralized, connected and just working.

Absolutely!

What's the funding situation like? Sounds like it's being used by many countries. They should be making millions. I hope they aren't on Github, otherwise that would be very non-European.

Ya I heard of the attacks on chat.blahaj.zone, the bigots are relentless. Hopefully blocking becomes smoother.

What are some good rooms to join on matrix? Is there a list? Been wanting to try it, but no one I know even knows what it is.

Most big FOSS projects have a dedicated matrix room at this point, so if you are invested in one you could check that out. But in reality i have barely used public rooms despite using matrix for many years now. I just use it to replace all other messengers i used before. It used to be quite janky but its been getting and will continue to get more and more stable and reliable.

To answer your question, there is this https://matrixrooms.info/ which is often recommended by the matrix devs. Its a basically a search engine for public matrix rooms.

In terms of clients, while there are cool 3rd party clients, they lag behind so much that they dont give you a good picture of the current feature set. Only element-desktop and ElementX Android / iOS support the current audio/video call system.

Also see this server list, because the big one (matrix.org) is not recommended https://servers.joinmatrix.org/

Wish XMPP became more popular instead...

But it's still great to have an open protocol which allows bridges more easily.

[โ€“] lena@gregtech.eu 2 points 2 days ago

XMPP is not that good of a protocol: https://soatok.blog/2024/08/04/against-xmppomemo/.

I'm not saying matrix is free of any issues, but it's still better than xmpp.

[โ€“] polle@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Me too, sadly most clients are shit. Only conversation on android is quite nice.

[โ€“] petrescatraian@libranet.de 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

@polle Dino also looks nice. And Gajim fits more at home on XFCE imo. There's also Kaidan for KDE based distros and there was UWPX on Windows (which sadly was discontinued)

[โ€“] polle@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

Iam using gajim daily, i would not recommend it. Dino looks and feels nice, but it's sadly still too buggy :( Kaidan is new to me, i give it a try. Thanks for the recommodations

Matrix also has roots in Israel...
