I didn't elect them.

You're mad, and you're right to be. I didn't comment in this thread saying other people shouldn't be mad about what the U.S. is doing.

I'm talking about people. The comment I replied to said it was cute that people thought there would be elections. They were saying anyone here who has hope for their country to continue as a democracy is mistaken.

When you come to a sub/community about fighting Trump and say "fuck you" you're saying it to people who hate what is happening, not MAGA.

Yeah, seems like more needs to happen. To be clear, there are big and regular protests, which don't seem to get much coverage. But to me a protest isn't strategic enough. It's not enough to say "we're mad" and get press coverage, there should be some specific goal that mass actions accomplish.

And if you're following closely, it's not generally bills that are being passed, it's the president issuing executive orders which claim to exercise power which by law the president doesn't have. But because our legislature and highest court won't fight back it's treated like these have the power of law.

Until the Republicans no longer control those bodies the only check on Trump is state governments, lower courts, and private citizens/organizations.

Things are really bad. I don't have any issue with someone pointing out reality. I have an issue with someone mocking those who believe it's possible for things to improve.

If you're Canadian as your instance suggests I can understand being especially freaked out. It's embarrassing and appalling for Trump to be bullying our long time friends and talking about making Canada a state.

Still, you're being a dick. "Everyone warned you" Yeah no shit! I didn't need a warning. Since 2016 I've gone door to door, I've tabled, volunteered at polling places, met with my representatives, protested. I'm just one person but many people have done the same.

I didn't come here asking other people to do something about it. I commented because someone from another country was mocking Americans who believe we'll have elections again.

You're right it's important to be realistic about the situation. Can't effect change if we don't understand our situation.

It's not realistic and it's self defeating to say there won't be elections in four years. Could that change between now and then? Yes, but a lot would need to change.

More realistically I could see red states degrading the voting process to the point where it's not possible for honest outcomes in those states, and that's bad enough since it would mean no significant change at the federal level.

Regardless, what's got me angry was the original comment from someone who doesn't live here saying it's "cute" to think we'll have elections. It's patronizing and encouraging hopelessness.

We have hope. We're in for a lot of pain, and it's not evenly distributed - some people will get hurt much more than others, some people are going to die. I encourage everyone to contribute what they can in their own way to protect themselves and their neighbors. But we have hope. Remember the third Reich, for all the millions who died, only lasted 12 years. Remember the United States was founded with slavery, and we fought a war to end it. Change is possible, and after much work and suffering, inevitable.

Any given individual deciding to give up and that there's nothing we can do won't result in the MAGA/Trump era lasting forever, but it could help it last longer than it needs to.

You shouldn't make assumptions about my actions up to this point.

Are you from the U.S.? If so what steps are you taking?

If you're not, glad to take advice and encouragement and constructive criticism. But I don't have any patience for "lol you're fucked"

Elon is still very much in the picture. But glad about this particular race!

It's cute that Americans still expect an election after the end of this term

Get fucked.

Yes, everything is fucked, yes America has always had racism, exploitation and corruption, and yes it's at a peak right now.

Still, acting like it's reasonable to expect no elections is a self fulfilling attitude. If that happens I'll be furious about it, and I expect my neighbors to be as well, and I expect people to do something about it.

Keep in mind management of elections is handled by the states, so just because we have a maniac in the white house doesn't mean he has unlimited power.

Returning to my first point, fuck you. It sucks to be experiencing this, and it's shitty to be pointing and laughing while people are struggling.

To be fair, he did go around the house calling "Mom, Dad?" If he had a phone before assuming he had wished them away he would probably try texting.

Good god, can we focus on the situation in front of us?

I voted for Harris even though she wasn't my preferred candidate, and many others did too. The much more significant problem would be people who voted for Trump, or didn't vote at all. Bashing uncommitted voters doesn't improve our situation.

If the administration doesn't obey the courts we all need to be prepared to take more extreme measures.

I'm interested in ways that people document, prioritize and execute items they need to do. What have you found useful?

For me: I don't particularly care about other Outlook functionality, but flagging emails and managing them in the sidebar has helped me a lot. I have it set to display only items due today, and then sorted into categories like "now," "soon," "pending." If I don't expect to get to an item today I change the due date to tomorrow or next week. Items don't have to be based on an email either, you can just type into the sidebar text field.

When I get emails I either immediately reply, flag it for later action, or ignore, and then I drop all emails into one giant folder. If I need to find something I do it all by search.

I've tried other systems like gmail's to do list, but it feels like way more friction to accomplish the same things, especially wanting to only view tasks due today, and categorizing tasks.

Likewise I've tried to-do-list apps, but not being able to instantly convert an email into a task, and not having documentation easily at hand when I go to perform the task makes them feel more burdensome.

Recently replaced the headlight bulbs for my car and saw the box indicated you shouldn't put them in the garbage because they contain mercury. I know that some retailers like home depot have a program to recycle florescent bulbs, but my understanding is that's specifically for residential bulbs (like the kind you might get at home depot). AutoZone will take back some parts but don't appear to have a program for bulbs. What's the easiest, responsible way to dispose of these?

In the US most students recite "the pledge of allegiance" every morning before school, which is kind of crazy. If you were in charge, what if anything would you replace it with?

I just saw a discussion among corporate event planners where one person was upset that event organizers don't give proper consideration to scheduling over top of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

I can appreciate the annoyance, when I was still a practicing Christian I would never think to schedule a work thing over Easter or Christmas. We should treat others with consideration, and should be mindful of what others view as important days. But I also don't know what each religion considers to be major, non negotiable holidays. Do you?

Another question, does it matter where the event is? (for example, in the US should less consideration be given to holidays of religions that have fewer adherents?)

I know people can wear two video cameras to recreate a first person experience in virtual reality. I also know they make those mannequin head stereo mic sets that create interesting spacial audio, supposedly because they mimic the head's shape and position of our ears.

Instead of the dummy head, does anyone make a mic set that you can wear, with the mics in approximately the position of our ears / ear shaped?

I was thinking you could do some interesting things with that, like recording a band in their practice space from the perspective of the band members. Or tracking lead vocals where the singer is singing to a person wearing the mic set.

Some animals sing (birds, whales) and plenty of animals make sounds together at roughly the same time (wolves howling, prairie dogs yelling at threats). Are there animals that harmonize? Or animals that make sound that's rhythmically coordinated, like has a time signature?

Guess I'm asking about more finely coordinated sounds. It's something that's pretty neat about human music.

Doesn't seem especially practical, but I thought folks here might be interested in this method. With the increasing scarcity of pay phones I suspect it might be equally as "easy" to get a burner cell phone with cash and register a signal account that way.

No, not talking about their own shit or vomit, har de har. I mean how dogs can't have chocolate, can't eat grapes. Are there things it's no big deal for them but would be toxic for us.
