I have baked some fruit bread for the first time. I put chopped apricots and dates, cranberries and lingonberries in it. It's pretty tasty. I've soaked a more normal selection of mixed fruit and will make another bread this (checks time) afternoonโ€ฝ What the..

It didn't get a chance to cool down before people were into it, so the crumb isn't perfect ๐Ÿ™„ hope the next loaf works better!

I have a question for those who've had people with dementia around. My very beautiful old friend has been moved into full nursing home which is what she needs but I saw her yesterday and she is a bit confused about why she is moved, and she is sad and bored. She can no longer read, she now struggles to use the phone, she watches the news on the telly but doesn't have the interest in anything else, and she has a walker to get around but in a new place doesn't know many people and doesn't know the floorplan etc.

She's bored. She has family visitors and stuff but it's so long stuck in a room. I hung a couple of photos up that remind her of special things but is there anything I can do or suggest to local family to help keep her occupied during the day? She's at that sad sad place where she's lost her ability to do things before the desire. I am at a loss and I live too far away to visit more than once every few months.

Sorry for the wall of text I think I needed to get that out. Any ideas??

[โ€“] Pilk@aussie.zone 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not sure if you've stumbled across Teepa Snow but she's a multi-decade occupational therapist and dementia educator. If you search "bored" on her YouTube at least three of those videos talk about helping with boredom. All of her stuff is amazing though and targeted at the person or people caring for the person with dementia.

I'm sorry ๐Ÿ˜” my dad has early onset Alzheimer's and it's hard. He likes to do what he's always liked to do, tinker with things in the shed, woodwork type of stuff, fixing up surfboards, and he's still able to at this point, even if he ends up repeating steps a few times. He likes nature docos and YouTube surf videos. All stuff he's been into in the past. He likes hanging out with his mates who are sweethearts and keep him in line. Sounds like your friend is more advanced then my dad and I don't have experience with that, but soon will. I just wanted to share the little I know.
Are there any old hobbies your friend has that maybe she fell out of the habit of? I don't know, knitting, drawing, colouring in? Or if she enjoyed birds or wildlife maybe some picture heavy books about that stuff?

[โ€“] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 10 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Hugs. Yes that friend support is critical. And just self care help. Yesterday I just sat and talked and clipped her nails and lots of hugs. My friend is a nun so much or her life revolved around community and study and at least there are still lots of people helping and advocating for her now.

She did lots of crafts like embroidery and sewing but long way past it now. I like the idea of photo books and I just found a one button music player for old folk. I am going to get that and load it up with classical music which is another love (she was a piano and music teacher for 50 years). Thanks

[โ€“] Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

So sorry to hear that about your friend.

What surprises me w/ my ol' girl (different sort of dementia though) is chuck her in front of piano and away she goes (she was a muso). Maybe a keyboard?

[โ€“] Eagle@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago

Brains are such complex things. I once looked after a lady who lost her speech because of a massive stroke. Put some ABBA on and listen to her sing, word and pitch perfect though!

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Are there any crafts she can do?

Lego?

Jigsaws?

Podcasts?

[โ€“] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Not anymore but see my response to Force. And thanks

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

So sorry, I was trying to think of activities that are easy but can be interesting too,

[โ€“] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago

I appreciate it. It's a really hard stage

[โ€“] PeelerSheila@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago

I haven't had any experience with people with the more advanced situation your friend has (mum was just starting to show signs when she passed away). But perhaps those schemes where people get visits from volunteers to have a cuppa and a chat might help pass the time?

[โ€“] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

This really sucks for herโ€ฆ I can well relate to the loss of ability to do activities before the desire. And a lot of easy activities can feel patronising or boring.

Would she have any interest in scrapbooking or collage? Watercolours? Does her facility have any art sessions or activities to help residents mix?

She might not be interested in anything other than the news but wondering if documentaries might help.

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 4 points 4 weeks ago

that's why I suggested podcasts, they can be interesting

No luck with the renaissance fair today, woke up feeling unwell.

Went to the Golden Hills Brewery in Diamond Creek today because they're got this 55 club thing going on. $55 for a case of their beer plus a whole bunch of other perks. For the price of decent beer these days that's a steal

What can I say? It's Saturday night.

No, it's Sunday morning. Saturday night is so yesterday.

My neighbours are babysitting this piece of shit, cottonball looking, constantly barking little cuntface.

Calm.blue.fucking.ocean.

[โ€“] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I threw a beef tongue over the fence of a neighbour with a barking dog one time. I was housesitting. The homeowner later told me the neighbour was a serious criminal. House on The Strand in Willy. Nothing came back to me about it but I was amused at the idea of the guy finding his dog eating a tongue, if you were prone to paranoia that might bother you.

rained all night here

xclnt :)

Another lovely night of fuck all sleep. This time I woke up at 4:30 and my alarm goes off in 15. Might as well just get up and eat something.

This might help my sleep schedule though, unless I make up for the sleep debt tomorrow by sleeping in late.

I have just spent a small fortune on stuff to maintain my lawnmower. If these baby grasses ever actually sprout I will have nice sharp blades to trim them with. But despite diligent watering they seem disinterested in doing anything, it's been over a week and I am starting to fret. Maybe the grass eggs are not good? I might have to do a germination test.

[โ€“] TheWitchofThornbury2@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Its a new estate??? Might be worth getting the soil tested for contaminants. Ballarat and surrounds is full of ex mines and ex industrial sites. Soil might just be dead and/or compacted too - so innoculating with worms will help a lot to aerate and heal the soil. Lawn needs a good topsoil to sprout evenly, so might take a bit of time to get going. You doing the right thing with compost/mulch on the beds though.

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

This area was farmland, cattle grazing primarily. So there shouldn't be anything too drastic (other than some knarly weeds). There was already grass growing there, I've just added some sandy loam on top to even things up a bit and sprinkled grass seeds on. It probably just needs a bit more time, and having turned back to rainy weather should help. The grass that was there is going great, it's just the bare patches where I raised the soil level and removed some weeds that I need the seeds to sprout in. Apparently it should be somewhere between 5 and 12 days for the first varieties to sprout, its about 9 days so far so it's probably just a bit slower than I would like.

[โ€“] TheWitchofThornbury2@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Sounds like you've done all the right things. We've had some chilly days, which might affect the soil temperature so the upper end of the time period sounds about right. Tonight's nice warm rain should help a lot.

The Creep Tapes season 2 has started and I remember who my villain-crush is.

Edit:

this man can terrorise and murder me any fucking day ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿฅต

Watching Mark Duplass being a creepy and chaotic murder goblin makes me very, very hot and I don't know why. But he's just as good in season 2, and I see season 3 is coming out next year.

I need to go back and watch the Creep films again.

Funnily, I saw Mark Duplass is in a current tv show with Jennifer Aniston (it's called The Morning Show), and he's won awards for his performance. I'm very happy for him, and part of me wants to watch it because Mark is a great actor, but I also don't him as anything but the Creep ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyway, that's my Sunday Morning Crush Gush. You may continue with your scheduled programming.
