Exploring the question How many ways are there to combine red, white and blue and still claim it has some kind of meaning.
But still better than African flags. Like some originality would kill them.

As someone mentioned in another comment it's the West Africa that does red, green and yellow with a star in any possible combinations
I think you're thinking of west African flags with similar colours with a star in the middle.
The rest of Africa is pretty original as pugjesus showed
The flag was not the main identifier, it was just the colours (literally) of the main identifier: the coat of arms.
Then the simplification became the main identifier.
Still better then fifty stars of the US ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
