My first memes were all in ascii art.

In the middle of the earth, in the land of the Shire

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

I still remember seeing those for the first time, right up there with hearing dr. sbaitso and the wav2pc speaker app.

Mine were PETSCII using C-64 graphical codes from shifted letters. I had an animated signature line on one BBS of the Enterprise that would redraw it, making it warp out to the side of the screen. It works well because of the slow baud rate. :D

Missing 2004: ‘All your base are belong to us’ sliding in right after this.

Missing 2004: ‘All your base are belong to us’ sliding in right after this.

Try 1999 or 2000! I forget when exactly, but it predated all of these.

These really go show how memes used to have a much longer shelf life than most memes today. I remember seeing references to these exact memes up until about 2011.

I remember seeing 3 of the 4 here in the past year.

When we were in highschool, I convinced my mate to make a 10 minute loop of the badger badger badger song and to see how long he can play it at the school social before a teacher came to tell him to change it, we lasted about 7 minutes of it looping. The crowed loved it tho.

I still use the ORLY expression sometimes. Some people get it still.

Flying toaster Screensaver came first, I think...

Some Millienals complain about "brain rot content", but likewise speaking of the badger as the "Meme of the year" tells enough

[–] NichEherVielleicht@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago

We did some nastys in the pastys.

[–] ICCrawler@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yes and no. We definitely had brain rot content. Charlie the Unicorn also comes to mind, or Fingertips. But it was nowhere near as widespread, popular, or in such vast quantities as today. The internet is more accessible than ever with the advent of smartphones in everyone's pockets and social media is ever-expanding no matter how much people complain about it. And meme culture exploded because of that.

[–] Kojichan@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

I had to explain Charlie the Unicorn to my SO, whose native language is French. That was very awkward.

Thanks! I think I saw that image somewhere but thought it was from a video. I liked this one from the link:

Star wars kid!

...At least he got out early, but man that was tragic!

[–] Kojichan@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Apparently I live in that dude's hometown at the moment. Kind of a crowning achievement for me. Still feel bad for him, though.

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Never liked that one. Internet bullying
