Proton CEO Andy Yen is a libertarian tech bro who supports Trump. Tech bros are a societal cancer, willing to kill the many to benefit the few.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 39 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was also offended by his anti democrat tweet but its a stretch to call him pro trump. There is a medium article going over his politics in the last decade and its pretty much entirely liberal left.

Do you have any other sources beyond this one tweet (the very same one the poster you replied to mentioned)?

I'm genuinely curious, because I haven't heard much about him beyond that

This article goes over both sides. I was super pissed off at Andy's tweet and response but hes not MAGA for it. The problem I had was that he was dumb enough not to be 100% opposed to Trump and dumb enough to try and give him the benefit of the doubt.

[–] nanoswarm9k@lemmus.org 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Benefit of doubt for hitler is pretty nazi.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 5 points 3 days ago

No. That line of logic falls for me. There are plenty of things we've given the benefit of the doubt that we don't cosign or believe in even hitler. I'm not willing to write someone off as being MAGA because they said a positive thing about Trumps FCC pick. He doesnt need to be MAGA for that tweet to be a bad thing.

I am willing to lose trust in him for being stupid and thinking Lina Khan was a worse FCC chair when hes suppose to be an expert in this industry.

[–] Someone8765210932@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's almost 2026 and people are still acting as if we don't already know that you can not give any of them the "benefit of the doubt".

[–] nanoswarm9k@lemmus.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No such thing as neutral on a moving train. Holding still is going right. A little jog in place is woke. Running for a better life, is, well... antifascist. (Howard Zinn had a little essay collection?)

Proton’s official Reddit account posted a now-deleted comment stating that “Until corporate Dems are thrown out, the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.”

Within hours, Proton deleted its response across social media accounts, stating that the post — which started with the words “Here is our official response” — was in fact “removed because it was not actually an official statement.” The reply went on to say: “Our policy is that official accounts cannot be used to express personal political opinions. If it happens by mistake, we correct it as soon as we notice it.”

I sure hope someone was fired for that blunder!

(he wasn't)

A great Medium article on the topic that analyzes the entire situation: (coming to the conclusion that no, Proton does not really seem to be in favor of Trump/MAGA at all given their actual actions, and how the original statement was misinterpreted)

Do you have any other sources beyond the one tweet bandied about to back this up?

I don't disagree with your statement, I'm just genuinely curious because I haven't heard much about his personal politics beyond that

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Thanks for the info. In not thrilled with proton mail but moved because it was supposedly better. I won't be sticking around

Switched to Tuta myself, Proton CEO sucks.

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You don't even need to dislike them because of that. There has never been any indication that their VPN is private and their record of turning over customer data proves that.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Turning over encrypted customer data. Like they have to, per the law.

How do u get past the 6 month deletion for inactive accounts? I've lost my account like that and stupidly I had banks and social media on it. I never check emails, but I need an email address to reset a password if need be. Funnily now I can't reset passwords :`(

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 0 points 3 days ago

Reset all passwords every 3 months, I guess?

■■■ Proton ■■■■■■■ ~~donated~~ gave praise ■■■■ to ■■■■ Trump.

I use the whole suite and pay for it ever year because theyre the best competitor to Google, but Proton isn't one of the "good" ones and I wouldn't trust them to contest a subpoena or install a backdoor, either

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 30 points 4 days ago (2 children)

■■■ Proton ■■■■■■■ donated ■■■■ to ■■■■ Trump.

Did they? I know one of their CEOs was pro-Trump, but the organization as a whole spoke out against having any political affiliation. Do you have a source for their donation to Trump?

[–] gusgalarnyk@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago

If one or more of the guys making the most money at proton is pro-trump and makes donations, isn't that the same thing as the company doing it? Like if Willy Wonka funded rainforest restoration, buying his chocolate is directly supporting the rainforest regardless of if it's the factory or the CEO doing it.

In an age where corporations and the rich are literally destroying the world, I think it's reasonable for people to greatly weigh the political byproduct of their purchases. Proton doesn't seem to care about privacy or improving the world or being a good company, they seemingly just care about making enough money through catering to the privacy crowd. For me, going non-google isn't to hurt Google it's to support smaller owned businesses who also want to support smaller owned businesses and their community.

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Seems like youre right, I must've got my headlines mixed up. Can't find anything saying they donated but their CEO coming out immediately with praise is an awful thing regardless, IMO

[–] Photonic@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Spotify were the ones who donated

Didn’t they ban a Journalist at the request of a Cybersecurity council ?

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I remember it being some kind of "mistake" that they "fixed" once it made the news, but yeah. 😑

Exactly, they revert back when they saw the public uproar.

[–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 19 points 4 days ago

a redaction joke from trump supporters.

And neither would Proton...

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I opted for FastMail over Proton because fuck Protonmail's CEO. With FastMail, I'm blissfully ignorant of their politics. (ruin it for me if needed.)
