This dude is almost certainly working to be out of the house and active and social. Dude started putting into a government pension in the 1930s, he don't need to work for shit.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

He could enjoy his 1030 dollar monthly pension in peace?

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 12 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Not me, I intend to have a heart attack and fucking die by 50 if I'm lucky, 60 of I'm not.

Do you think you'll even be done with your Steam library by then?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

I'm planning an Elvis. Toxic megacolon burst while I'm eating a sandwich on the shitter. I've almost got the timing down

[–] TimeNaan@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Didn't he die of cardiac arrest?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

While eating a peanut butter and banana and marshmallow and pickle sandwich, with toxic megacolon, which burst and also gave him the heart attack and then he died

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Woo, that's a tricky combo to pull off. Make sure your achievement is put on your tombstone for that one.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

"their colon mega'd so much toxic I thought I'd died ve gone to the state fair"

I'm workshopping my epitaph. Originally it was going to be "what's that smell? It's me again" but you're right, an Elvis needs to be commemorated

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Tricky. Would you go for an almost clickbaity, "He pulled an Elvis" on your tombstone? I mean, not everyone knows how Elvis died. It'll get people thinking for decades to come

Or more detailed like "Toxic megacolon burst whilst eating a sandwich on the shitter" type thing? Not as clickbaity, but it'll still get people thinking...

if i set up a camera and youtubed it, and then QR coded below "As Elvis Went, So Did He" so they could watch my heart explode as i failed to shat myself to death as many times as i want?

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

You'd make millions and millions from all the views.
Well, not you exactly, but still it'll be good content. It could be the RickRoll of the future!!

If I recall correctly, this guy started working there after he retired from a government job. Just bored and wanted something to do, and he credited it with keeping him active enough to live as long as he did.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 75 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Isn’t it sad we have no third spaces for him to engage in and find meaning by helping his community instead of shareholder profits.

[–] cogman@lemmy.world 25 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

Hey, if you are willing to pay $7000 a month, you can always move into an assisted living facility. They have lots of nice third spaces and communities. But only if you can pay.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 20 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I got paid $9 an hour to hose down the furniture in the alzheimer's wing of one of those places. Man those places are bleak.

[–] cogman@lemmy.world 23 points 14 hours ago

Yeah. Everything around eldercare is corrupt. They charge like everyone has a personal nurse 24/7 while having 1 untrained minimum wage employee over 40 people.

But hey, the owners get to drive Bentleys

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Where'd you find a place that cheap?

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

I’ve seen regular condo and high rise complexes have stuff like movie theaters and tennis courts, wood shops and stitching rooms, puzzle and reading rooms. Some are even having restaurants as well.

[–] argueswithidiots@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago

It is sad, but it's also a societal failure. No one should ever have to choose between eating and medicine from week to week.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 12 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

For today's inspiration, here's an old man still working a minimum wage job because he'll never be able to afford retirement!

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

He already retired from a govt job. He was bored apparently. But your point remains.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 hours ago

Crikey. So it's more like... "For today's inspiration, here's an old man who had nowhere to go so he started working a minimum wage job that could be done by someone who actually needs the money just because he was bored!" ... situation then. Nice.

[–] northendtrooper@lemmy.ca 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Ok, I can see this perspective but at the same time this could be very well with any other economic policy. Some old, really old, dude is bored and wants to continue to contribute to society. Meanwhile my fat happy ass will be content living in my steam library after retirement.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

Makes me wonder if he'd still be at Walmart if he'd been introduced to a hobby such as video games a while back.
