It’s likely the spike in fuel prices will hurt Trump more than the files were going to.

[–] HonoraryMancunian@lemmy.world 84 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I can excuse raping children but I draw the line at increased fuel costs

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That has a much more direct impact on more people. It seems many people struggle with the concept of empathy. I know that's the case for my Trump supporting mom.

[–] jeffep@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I guess she's more into I'mpathy

I mean I still remember the Panama Papers, CumEx, Snowden, Wikileaks, Chelsea Manning. Nothing ever happens to the people in power. This was always gonna end like this.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Check out the Pandora papers! You won't hear about that on NBC

The Pandora Papers are 11.9 million leaked documents with 2.9 terabytes of data that the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published beginning on 3 October 2021.

Think Panama part 2, lots of world leaders banking internationally to avoid the taxes they make into law for everybody else. Not a peep from "mainstream media" that I know of.

[–] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago

Exactly. People in power learned a while back to just wait out the outrage and continue doing whatever the fuck they want.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

i remember all of those except CumEx. Given the spacing between Panama and Snowden i think that was during the year i spent dead for tax purposes and i do not want to google CumEx. What does it stand for?

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

CumEx / CumCum is a tax evasion / theft scheme in the billions local to Germany. No wonder you haven't heard of it

[–] phneutral@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As far as I know it is a European thing, non?

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'd have to check and get angry again...

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

what i mean is, is it short for something. i would have known about that, i feel like i should have known about that, that was my profession. i had clients in germany. just, i legitimately have two missing years in my memory.

it means WithWith or WithOut as far as i know. give me a little, i'm not googling Cum Cum

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Basically, very rich people got reimbursed taxes for losses that never manifested (or twice for the same thing, I think both schemes existed)

Since no one really answered, and i was curious, i went ahead and googled it, lol.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CumEx-Files

Edit: After further review of the links, Cum-Ex and Cum-Cum doesn't look to be short for anything:

“Cum-Ex” trades involved the acquisition of shares with (cum) dividends due on or just before the dividend record date and delivery of these shares after the dividend record date without (ex) dividends, which made it possible to obtain multiple returns of capital gains tax that had only been paid to the German tax authorities once.

So the Bush’s and all the presidents who want something to stop trending they just bomb countries??

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well that's been common knowledge since I first took an interest in geopolitics, several decades ago. We didn't call it "stop trending" back then but yeah.

Why do you think the US has been at war for like 95% of its existence?

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 22 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

Most people in the US are just so fucking stupid. Here I am in the middle of them just hoping another MAGA or two goes vigilante on their own politicians.

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It would take a lot more than just magas doing it.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

Democrats should not do it. That is what MAGA wants ... they are counting on it and are going insane because it isn't happening.

Does it really mean much if people aren't asking Google for "epstein files"? I don't think I've ever looked for that (or used Google to do so).

A lot of people are/were interested in looking it up on search engines to find out the latest information about it

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes but surely they'd move on to other phrases related to the files. Or to other search methods, really, that may not be under suspicion of hiding stuff. This is one data point.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Also direct interest may peter out long term as it becomes more common knowledge and no new data is present. It'd be like how a new game will get a boost in lookups but will generally be down to a certain number of searches within a year or two.

I think Epstein is wag the dog for Israel

Which is wag the dog for an international consortium of "banking interests" around since the 1800s who profit off of endless war

I'm not sure who the banking interests are wag the dog for, probably some JERKS

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

It’s all wag the dog in an endless viscous circle, which they literally told us they would do

[–] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Absolutely not. These are all massive human rights violations and none of them should be disregarded in favor of any other one. And the participants and benefactors of Epstein's island should all be severely punished. There is no amount of wag the dog that will change the fact that children were routinely sexually abused for blackmail on the rich and powerful.

Ok, but this says that the google search for "Epstein files" died on 18 of february, 10 days before USA/Israel started the attack. So the war is not about the Epstein files, which I agree with. It is about USA's foreign policy.
It is in the interest of USA and Israel to severely damage the Islamic regime of Iran.
It is in the interest of western allies to help or be quiet about the attacks and not to raise too much of a ruckus about it.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Wait why is it in US intrest to severaly damage Iran? there was a deal by Iran to give up all its nuclar stockpile and convert the rest to fuel irreversibly under full inspection and verification by the UN nuclar watchdog. AND they also would invite American oil companies to invest and trade with them. That was the deal Israel bombed away in the middle of negotiation.

[–] dominic.borcea@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh its not about the nuclear stuff, I don't think even the Trump admin believes that shit, even though they lie about it. I mean it from a military point of view and geopolitically.
Israel, USA and USA's partners in the area (Middle East) stand to gain because the Islamic regime is the one financing opposing factions in the are.
And on a larger scale, USA and USA's allies stand to win because the Islamic regime is the one actively aiding Russia in its war of conquest against an European country - for how many months/years now ... 3 years? 4 years? I lost track. Anyway, for a loooong time they have sent thousands upon thousands of drones to bomb Ukraine.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

You mean who opposing factions to US? Yemen? Lebanon? Syria? Iraq? Are you high? Wtf does the US have to do with these third-world countries in the middleeast?

Furthermore, India, North Korea and even China trade and help Russia in its wars. Iran had to trade with them because of US sanctions in first place.

If the US wanted to boost trade, economy, and stability of the environment and peace in the reigon, and actually help the people of Iran, they would have lifted sanctions and trade with them instead of this. That way the US would even have irresistable leverage on Iran that would force them to not send a dime to finance Russia in its war as you said.

Lastly, I dont know who you are referring to by US allies.. or US government allies.. and how do you define an ally. A genocidal aparthied and oppresive family dictatorships are considered US allies by your standards?

[–] dominic.borcea@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

If the US wanted to boost trade, economy, and stability of the environment and peace in the reigon, and actually help the people of Iran

USA/Israel don't care about the Iranian people, that's merely a propaganda stunt.

Furthermore, India, North Korea and even China trade and help Russia in its wars.

An open conflict with China is undesirable by both parties almost in equal measure. NK is already sanctioned up the ass, an open conflict would lead to a conflict with China. And I would like you to notice that India is being gradually weaned off the Russian teat, so to speak. Take a look at India's trends in regards to defense-related imports. Its not a process that started recently, but almost a decade ago. They used to get +65% of their shit from Russia, but in the present that number dropped to 40% and they've been replaced by France and Israel. I have a hunch that these numbers will continue to lean geopolitically west-ward.
India buying of Russian oil has been deemed as an acceptable cost, as they value India's resources more - and India's greatest value is people, they have a lot of those. Cheap labour for western capital.
Hence the "mother of all deals" that was recently signed.

A genocidal aparthied and oppresive family dictatorships are considered US allies by your standards?

I'm sorry. Are you new to the whole USA business?

[–] IcePee@lemmy.beru.co 3 points 2 weeks ago

"Por que no los dos?"

[–] x0x7@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Bill Clinton did this. The embargo on Iraq, according to Madeleine Albright, was to distract from the Monica scandal. 1 million children died from the loss of medical supply access.

[–] inari@piefed.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Its a common tactic used everywhere. The Argentinian junta also invaded the Falklands to distract from their low popularity at home.
