JJ is everything you want to build around.

A stud player — statistically one of the best corners in the NFL right now. Year-one starter with several years of CB1 experience, yet only 24 years old. Consistent, even though the defense around him and scheme is trash.

Yet Poles wants to let him walk. For what? So we can sign a lesser player for slightly less? We're not even salary cap strapped right now, so I don't know why he's being so cheap.

Idk man, I can't support this.

Most of his moves have looked really bad in hindsight. Why would his dealings with foundational players be any less questionable?

[–] Amaar1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How soon we forget Terrell Smith…not saying we shouldn’t pay JJ but I could also see Smith and Stevenson as our CBs.

[–] Falt_ssb@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

RYAN IS THIS YOU

[–] Movieguy70@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Sorry but JJ isn’t that kinda red line for me. Would I like to see him stay? Sure. But until we know how much JJ is asking for, you really can’t lay down the law. It’s very possible he just wants out and is making sure it happens.

[–] nox_nrb@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I only consider Foles making 2 mistakes. The coach and claypool. JJ averages 7 games played a season, and get no turnovers. I like JJ but🤷🏾‍♂️... Just get me a new coach and pick me a QB and LT in the draft.

[–] Footballfordayz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Worse than that it shows players they won’t be rewarded here.

[–] NelsonMuntz007@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

We don’t know for sure that it’s poles. JJ is a solid cb but I’m sure he’s asking to be paid like a top 5 cb. Is he a top 5 cb? Is he top 10? Or is he a solid starter?

I like JJ but he’s had injuries and a lack of ball skills so far. Personally, I see him as a top 15 cb.

And if they don’t think fields is the guy, we’re restarting the clock on everyone by drafting a new qb. We won’t be in win mode for a few more years

[–] BuffaloBrain884@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Having a QB on a rookie contract is the definition of "win now" in the NFL. That's your best possible window to win a Superbowl.

[–] NelsonMuntz007@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

True. True.

[–] devinstated1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't even see him as that, as someone else pointed out in the other thread, the crackpot PFF ratings that everyone loves to spoit in here about JJ this year, those same ratings had him outside the top 30 the previous 3 years. He's a solid starter when healthy but nothing special dude is maybe a top 25 corner and that's absolutely pushing it. You don't pay solid starters top of the line money just because your other options are trash.

[–] NelsonMuntz007@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m far closer to this take than the idea that he’s a top 5 cb. And in the end, he was a pace guy. He’d get us back a 2nd or 3rd back in return.

[–] chkthetechnique@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This sub is so dramatic... and the reason fans aren't GMs.

He has been granted permission to SEEK a trade. OMG FIRE EVERYONE!!1!

The most likely reason is JJ is asking for a number the organizations believes he won't get on the open market. Allow him to seek a trade to figure out his real market value as a bargaining chip, not because you actually HAVE to move him. See if he can command that money or if he's asking too much.

Then you don't actually have to trade him. You can then extend him for what he's worth or give yourself time to determine if you tag him.

If he gets traded for nothing, then yes, lose your collective minds... but until then, realize there's more to negotiations than blindly paying the asking price.

[–] devinstated1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

JJ is not, never has been and never will be a top CB. People on here are so delusional. JJ is a decent CB that rarely makes game changing plays, rarely gets targeted because the other CBs on the team are always hot garbage. He's maybe and this is pushing it a top 20-25 CB, which is ok but not someone you pay the money that he is looking for.

[–] rhj2020@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Roquan situation all over again, had that turned out good for us we would be like poles knows what he’s doing. But he signed a ok linebacker to big time bucks and let an all pro walk.

[–] nox_nrb@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I mean 🤷🏾‍♂️

[–] NineteenAD9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The people preaching patience for him after running Roquan and now potentially Jaylon out in consecutive years are delusional

[–] SemanDemon22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My sister asked me in anger during that shit show of a game, “who is even good on this defense?” I said Jaylon Johnson…. She agreed. That was it.

[–] hammerSmashedNail@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Teams are built through the trenches. Then you need a good qb. A good corner is a luxury. The best corner will have trouble if the qb has forever to throw the football. The best defense will have trouble if your own offense can’t score. JJ is a stud. Does giving him a huge bag make the bears better? Does it help them win? If yes then you pay him. If no you have to listen to offers.

[–] ojdidntdoit4@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

there’s no way to support poles even if he finds a way to keep him. what has he done to make anyone believe that we should trust him with our draft stock?

[–] chosenking247@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This franchise is poverty. Coaching is abysmal. Poles is an over analyzing penny pincher. George McCaskey is a geriatric nepo.

[–] Fraud_Hack@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do we really need to pay him for picking off hoyer?

[–] GoombaStoppingHoes@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If that's your sole take on him and not that various experts and analytics suggest he is a top 5 corner in the NFL then idk what to tell you man, its such a meathead take to say "picks" are what makes a CB.

[–] Stommped@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Well there’s a huge difference between letting him walk and getting a good pick in return. Letting him walk implies he plays out the season and just signs elsewhere

[–] alexamerling100@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This could be negotiation tactics

[–] Toews1978@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They don't need good corners they have such a stellar pass rush. Joke franchise

[–] tribsant23@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

We're gonna get someone 10% as good and pay them 90% as much as JJ is gonna end up with

[–] Petricorde1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The Roquan -> Edmunds way

[–] RIPRIF20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

There's a good chance Poles let's him walk because Poles isn't very good at his job. Most of his decisions have been terrible so far.

[–] GroktheDestroyer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m not sure what exactly he’s done that’s worth supporting him at all in the first place. He is out of his depth. Our good young talent knows they won’t get a contract with this clown

[–] Your_Fan_Shran@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

We have no idea what Johnson is asking.

[–] CarcosaBound@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He gave Edmunds $18M/yr…he can give JJ $20M-$22M

[–] SdotBreezy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

There hasn’t been a reason yet to support Poles.

[–] Ill_Introduction2604@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I support him getting fired.

[–] BaconScentedSoap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Can’t wait for JJ to walk and for Poles to waste even more picks on terrible CBs

[–] BobbleBobble@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Unathletic TE with mediocre stats? PAY THE MAN

Shutdown corner at a premium position? Can the Treasury bear this expense?

[–] dadbod_Rom3@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’d keep him around and franchise him. Make the next coach decide whether to keep him or trade him.

[–] quagmire0@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Letting Johnson go makes NO sense. You are going to get minimum value for him because a team has to sign him to a big deal. You'd honestly be better off giving him what he wants now, and then trading him next year, if draft value is what you are looking for.

But putting return aside, Johnson is clearly one of your best (if not your best) young, home-grown players. It makes no sense at all to not re-sign him. Two reasons: 1. He's a foundational piece in the secondary, 2. The rest of the team has already seen you boot guys last year. You kinda need a good faith re-sign that isn't Kmet -for the sake of morale alone.

[–] mimickin_birds@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If he wants 23 mil a year it makes zero sense for the Bears to pay that

[–] potionnumber9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

None of you have any idea what JJ is asking for. It could be a wild number that no one in their right mind should pay. If that's not the case though, yea, fuck this.

[–] daBabadook05@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

JJ is BY FAR my favorite Bear right now. Fuck this.

Poles out immediately please he’s setting this org even further back

[–] SFWzasmith@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Can’t really defend letting JJ walk with over $100M in cap space. Might be a Poles issue, might be another issue with ownership being shitty and not wanting to pay real dollars (shocking I know) or both. Either way, this shit is getting old fast.

[–] SuperFakks@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The problem is right now idk if Poles knows how to evaluate talent. He might think Johnson is bad but also seems to think Brisker was great so who’s to say what’s going on in his head.

[–] erichw23@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is where we're at as his bear fans were so lost they don't even know how football works. How is this a post? Bro some teams are farms for other teams he just have to accept that The Bears will most likely never be good in your lifetime they haven't been good for 40 years

[–] C-D_legacy10@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

What was offered, what is asking?
