That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

If you found out your cousin was a billionaire (non-famous) and the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, how would you react? Would you be mad he didn’t tell you?

This sub needs better moderation.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

This place was always fated to become its subreddit namesake. Might as well change the name to asklemmy2 now before the transition is complete

[–] spectrums_coherence@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sorry, but why? Are they breaking any rules?

[–] mechoman444@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, as a matter of fact, the subject of this particular post fits the sub exactly. It is a stupid question.

It is incredibly stupid. There is no real way to answer it, and any answer would be superficial because it is such a massive hypothetical that the answer itself does not actually matter.

Although, as stated above, it technically fits the sub, it violates the spirit of what this is supposed to be.

[–] spectrums_coherence@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I personally feel it is exactly the sprit of community is designed for, no? This community explicitly welcome potentially stupid question in the hope that good discussions can arise from it.

I agree that this question is indeed werid and perhaps even deserves to be called "stupid question", but I feel this is what this community is welcoming, no?

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The original purpose of the subreddit its named after was for questions that you'd feel stupid asking. Like "how often do I actually have to wash a hoodie?" Like common knowledge things you just don't know. Askreddit was for casual or goofy questions like this.

There is no rule that makes this question unsuited but personally I think it's a useless community without a strict theme. R/nostupidquestions just became r/askreddit2 and I expect the same to come from this one without any clear rules or moderation.

[–] mechoman444@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Exactly. I totally agree.

I think a really good way to avoid crap like this is to make a rule not allowing hypotheticals on the sub.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Yeah. I think it could also use a ban on current politics, too, but not because it's against the spirit of the community. Feels like most political questions are either bait or "I'm too lazy to read the news or read the comments of any news post so can you brief me on it"

[–] Townlately@feddit.nl 18 points 3 days ago

Only if we talked often and he kept it secret...but even then I would be more bewildered than mad. Maybe I'd be mad if I found out and there was like, a homeless family member he didn't help or something.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Why would I be mad? This makes no sense to me. How close am I to this "cousin" in this hypothetical?

Also, there are only a few thousand billionaires in the world, even if not "famous" they are all probably on a list or "known" in some capacity - it's hard not to be noted when you have the accumulated wealth hoard of a dragon.

[–] PixelNomad@sopuli.xyz -5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

there are only a few thousand billionaires in the world, even if not “famous”

Do you know what Knight Transportation is? Probably not, but it’s a trucking company worth $8 billion, and it is on the Fortune 500. Do you know who the CEO is? No, you don’t—and his net worth is not publicly disclosed. So even if they are online, unless you are really into corporations, CEO stocks, etc., I doubt you’d know.

When I worked at a country club, I saw many high-net-worth individuals of all races—Black, Hispanic, Asian—and I can tell you that you wouldn’t be able to pick them out in a lineup.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

so ... a CEO of a company that is valued in the billions of dollars - that CEO is not a billionaire, for context

The CEO is a millionaire, though - a quick search shows his compensation is over $4 million

I'm not saying every billionaire can be picked out in a lineup by a random member of the public, but just pointing out that no billionaire is escaping scrutiny or awareness of the public in some capacity (this is why I started with "even if not 'famous'").

You also didn't really disclose anything about what I asked - why would my cousin be under an obligation to disclose he's a CEO of a trucking company and has a salary of over $4 million?

I think it would depend on the kind of relationship I had with the cousin, and whether I felt he was lying or betraying me somehow by lying ... but otherwise, no - I'm not seeing how a cousin has any obligation to disclose their net worth, their job, etc. to you.

I think I knew one of my cousins was a kindergarten teacher, that they liked to play softball, etc. - but they didn't tell me when they changed jobs and I never knew their net worth. If they became a CEO of a company I wouldn't feel they had an obligation to tell me.

Are all your questions related to this book you're writing?

Or are you just obsessed with rich people

[–] nullpotential@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 days ago

I would be more mad that she was a billionaire than I would be that they didn't tell me.

[–] JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago

Somebody would be getting a note demanding a reasonable ransom for my safe return in their Christmas card.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No, I'd be mad he's such a piece of shit and I would tell him to go die.

Being a billionaire is worse than being a murderer.

[–] trashcroissant@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Being a billionaire almost always involves murder in some indirect or direct way.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

How would I react? I would be happy for their success and honestly a bit jealous.

Would I be mad? No…

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I would fucking probably murder him.

He's a sleaze bag that constantly bums off of every single person he knows to the point where people abandon him over and over and over again due to his bummery. And to top it all off he sent nudes to my ex a few months before she died.

If I found out that on top of all of that he was a billionaire and could live a billionaire lifestyle and do whatever the hell he wanted to do and he went that far out of his way to make me miserable, I would just kill him.

[–] False@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I have a bunch of cousins that I have basically 0 relations with. I guess I wouldn't be mad because I haven't told them shit about myself either.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I wouldn't be mad at all, since I rarely talk to my cousins. But, I would be glad to hear they were doing well!

I mean DO have cousins whose aunt KEEPS BRAGGING ABOUT THEIR VACATIONS...

And when my family was in NYC (like when I was 8 - 12) they were busy so they left their kid (who's named RAYMOND) with us, and he fucking started bullying me... fucking ABCs (American-Born Chinese) so arrogrant cuz they got birthright citizenship and spoke better

And recently, they just bragged about this Raymond apparantly "making millions of dollars from a bussiness trip abroad".

I'm just like... cool good for you, lucky you got privilage.

They grew up with Wii and Nintendos

My other cousins, all those who were all born in the US, every one of then had a bunch of toys and video game consoles growing up... I never had an actual video game console growing up. My family is broke as hell.

So its just jealousy, envy... but still, I'm not gonna beg them for money, its a face thing.

Which is why my mom is so disappointed in me, we're probably the "poorest" in my extended family...

One of the Aunts actually got my family to the US so I am thankful for that... (the mom of that Raymond kid, that kid who bullied me when my parents wete babysitting him, I say "babysitting" but he was a year older than me actually)

I mean I have no relationship with any of my cousins, they didn't even wanna talk to be because I was "Fresh Off the Boat"... so we just kinda never really talked...

I don't care about them... I'm more worried about whether or not I get my half of my parents stuff, those cousins are irrelevent to me, I mean good for them, they had more privilege than I ever did.

But then again, they probably had more pressure and expectations... so IDK if they actually have happier lives... I heard they were forced to do tutoring and stuff. Their dad is a college professor and I think their family own a lot of realestate and they have stocks and get news cars so often, like a new flagship phone every year... vacations every year...

And my paternal grandparents keeps asking money from their children... its always so awkward... my mom told dad to "make sure to give it when everyone else is in the room" so there are witnesses and they wont say their son (aka: my dad) was being "unfilial"...

Edit: Okay my comment was full of typos lol

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

If this was someone that I have regular contact with, I'd be kinda impressed that they managed to keep the secret. Though there's degrees to wealth - I wouldn't be impressed of the secretkeeping if I already knew that they were some kind of rich manager type, just not that rich.

That said, fuck billionaires.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Well this actually happened to me so I can speak from experience when I say mildly surprised. He's a distant cousin though so maybe it would have been a bigger surprise if it was a first cousin. He married an heiress.

[–] Paragone@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago

Why would it be my business?

Why would it matter?

Why would I care?

YOUR life & karma are YOUR life & karma.

Commit into Eternity, face the consequences ( as benJoseph said: "take up your cross", aka face into one's karma ), & endless-stream-of-universe's "processing" of one's continuum/soul will eventually release one's continuum from entrapment/containment in ignosis/soul-ignorance.

For judging the nature of their actions ( re what they can vs can't actually do ), that knowledge would be useful-framing, but otherwise, it's irrelevant.

You found it, you found the stupid question

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

lol, doesn't that affirm they posted in the right community? after all, this is the community where we openly invite stupid questions - so we can't complain, can we?

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean, kinda... but we all know OP isnt what was intended.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

ah, that's a good point actually ... I wonder if this means we need a new community, one that is for earnestly stupid questions - maybe /c/onlystupidquestions or something
