Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

Larger resolution with alt text:

Panel 1: Bartender says "No, we're not a Nazi bar." Panel 2: "We just didn't ban Nazis. Then all the Nazis started coming here because nobody else would allow them." Panel 3: "Now they're our best customers and nobody that isn't a Nazi wants to drink here." Panel 4: Bar exterior with 'X' logo signpost with a blue Twitter logo banner on the second floor reading: "(Formerly) twitter". Bottom right watermark: Patreon logo; Instagram logo; @mygumsarebleeding

Just putting this here for better accessibility.

Oh wow. A mod doing mod things for the benefit of the community.

What a rare sight.

[–] Magnum 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Does this really count as moderation?

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yes. They are amending a post to include accessibility options for the community and pinning it as top comment for visibility. It is a form of moderation through addition. Moderation isn't just punitive actions.

Also, the bar is owned by a nazi.

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

as Jimmy Carr pointed out, he's not a nazi, he's South African, which is ... well ...

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 47 points 4 days ago

He did two Nazi salutes in front of the whole country. I don't think there's any doubt that he's a Nazi.

[–] weaselsrippedmyflesh@piefed.social 83 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Feels particularly relevant after all the Stonetoss and Jago entries recently.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 42 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Who the fuck is still polluting the internet with Stonetoss?

Oh, yes, nazis obviously, okay, point taken.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Plenty of people don't know he's a Nazi and only see the amogus and other innocuous stuff

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That particular person in here knows, because even if they didn't before (doubtful) they were told, and then said they didn't care because they're "separating the art from the artist".

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That doesn't apply when every piece of art is just "fascism good" lol

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Problem is not all of them were, and they mostly picked the less obvious ones.

Anyway, separating art from artist is always a tough call, but personally I don't believe in it for people that are still currently alive and doing shit with the attention (and/or money) they get.

I can get into the Cthulhu mythos (especially as a foundation for other stuff), but I won't touch anything from J.K. Rowling.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 6 points 5 days ago

I did it once accidentally 🫒

I don't use Instagram anymore thankfully

Half the seats at the bar are filled with mannequins, but that makes the bar feel crowded, like it's still the happenin' spot. That convinces a lot of brands, celebrities, politicians and journalists that they still need to keep making appearances at the bar.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 19 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

And then one of the mannequins glides towards you and starts telling you about they just love th3 delicious taste of an ice cold Coca Cola^TM^ and accept no substitutes.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 19 points 4 days ago

Suddenly, in sync, a lot of the "people" in the bar say in unison "As a strong black woman, I think president Trump is right about..."

[–] rickdg@lemmy.world 42 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Also, here are all the AI people for some reason. Also, politicians and journalists who never left.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 50 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I know an AI guy who still uses Xitter. I asked him why he doesn't use Mastodon or Bluesky. He says he tried Bluesky, but there's no AI content there. The AI people tried to move to Bluesky, but they got bullied off the website because people hate AI.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Huh, before I deactivated my Bluesky account, I'd still see AI slop content slip through my filter on the rare occasion.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 12 points 5 days ago

He meant people talking about AI. AI science and finance stuff.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 38 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Didn’t ban is a strange way to say welcome with open arms.

[–] SourGumGum@lemmy.world 39 points 4 days ago (5 children)

I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, "no. get out."

And the dude next to me says, "hey i'm not doing anything, i'm a paying customer." and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, "out. now." and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed

Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, "you didn't see his vest but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them."

And i was like, ohok and he continues.

"you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it's always a nice, polite one. And you serve them because you don't want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool too.

And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it's too late because they're entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So you have to shut them down.

And i was like, 'oh damn.' and he said "yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people."

And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven't forgotten that at all.

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 days ago

You should give attribution. I've for sure read this before, and it's clearly what the cartoon is referring to.

Wow, that's insidious.

And also a great example of why local curmudgeons tend to be some of my favorite people lol

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Neat, copy paste from... 2000s? A classic

[–] hodgepodgin@lemmy.zip 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

Still a fair amount of people who know X is a nazi bar but still use it.

  • X is too popular / addictive
  • Alternatives are considered non-viable on a recommendation and feed algorithm basis
  • There are ideological barriers to alternatives. (Lemmy is an example)
[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

There is a problem with this argument somehow. We are also a Nazi bar here on the Threadiverse, just with alternative-facts-using so-called "leftist" tankies rather than alternative-facts-using right-wing Nazis, yet we routinely ignore this fact. Tankies call for the literal genocide of everyone currently living in a Western civilization - i.e. they want me, you, and pretty much everyone we've ever met to die since we collaborate with their enemy by participating in capitalism. Anyone who has a bank account or pays rent is part of this.

But we are still here, despite knowing this? Lemmy.zip still federates with hexbear.net, lemmygrad.ml, and lemmy.ml. Ideological purity takes a backseat to practical convenience it would seem, everywhere you go. The Threadiverse is still better than Reddit, and Mastodon/Friendica/etc. still better than Xhitter/Facebook/etc. Despite the fact that we platform Nazis (in our case tankies) - heck, a lot of people here have literally sent actual funding to them, and it would seem that a large fraction of that funding goes to spreading their message rather than development of the Lemmy source code.

See e.g. https://lemmy.zip/post/37753269.

[–] Killer@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Japan is a huge user of twitter, only country with more users is the US

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

its basically reddit.

[–] Jaybird@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We have a saying, if you are at a table with nine Nazi's... There are ten Nazi's at the table.

Speak up.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

So we are all tankies, here in this Lemmy community.

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works -3 points 4 days ago (2 children)
[–] DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com 1 points 4 days ago

Tankies defeated the German fascists, the Italian fascists, the Ukrainian fascists, and the Japanese ones. America supported the German fascists until very late, it's sending billions of dollars worth of weapons to Nazis in Ukraine, is sending hundreds of billions of weapons to Israel which is committing a genocide against a semite population. So are you a Nazi, a Nazi supporter, or do you just not know?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

only if you go to tankie instances or respond to tankie accounts. they can easily be blocked.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

Untrue - that's not how federation via the ActivityPub Protocol works. e.g. I see content from hexbear hosted on Lemmy today (example). Even if hexbear ceased to exist today, its content would live on forever at Lemmy.today and all of the other places that federated with it.

Also, you can block Nazis while using Xhitter, so your statement detracts from the discussion by entirely ignoring the point. Not all of life's issues can be solved by 5-word one-liners
