This makes good sense to me, I’m happy to walk to the corner for mail to make the job 1000% more efficient for the carriers

in many places they've always done this. I grew up in Cambridge Ontario and when I was a kid we had a neighbourhood mailbox thing that we'd have to go to every day to get mail.

I wish they would do this in Germany as well, worked for 2 months for Deutsche Post, it was one of the worst jobs i ever did and i worked as a waiter for 10 years, at least it helped me lose weight while i worked there July-August 40° every day, but would never go back there even if it was the only job available.
