Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

[an orange character is speaking, smugly]
I vote far right because I hate immigrants who come to our country and do not adopt its culture

[from their brain, a thought bubble emerges which shows a sunny thai landscape, in which orange is chilling on a deck chair by the sea, drinking coconut juice and smiling, clearly enjoying life]
I dream of having enough money to move/retire to Thailand and never learn the language or adopt the culture

It's not specified but I'm pretty sure that not many Americans actually care about Thailand as an expat location, they would probably dream of something in central or South America.

Now British on the other hand... you can just vaguely point at any country that ever so happened to touch the British empire lol.

I would much rather deal with the typical American tourist than a British tourist. There's a difference between ignorance and arrogance.

He's talking about

Tap for spoilerThai green fish curry.

[–] Rolive@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

That is a valid reason to go to Thailand.

But Thai authorities have a different view. They have filed a compliant, accusing the couple of breaching a section of the country’s criminal code that relates to threatening the sovereignty of a state, and erosion of a state’s independence, according to the Post. The charges carry the death penalty

Damn, they don't fuck around.

You don't become the country in South Asia that was never colonized by being chill when someone tries to impede on your sovereignty

You also get several years in prison if you ever happen to disrespect one of the members of the royal family, even if you didn't know that it was a member of the royal family.

Generally speaking, your Embassy will intervene and bail you out if you aren't a complete POS.

But it usually involves a long time in foreign custody and not terribly kind treatment.

His wife’s a Thai citizen…

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's a traitorous way to describe anti-human psychos. Almost makes them seem cool.

Don't break the law in foreign countries, no matter how unjust you find those laws. It's a bad idea.

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

I wonder what happened, though I can probably guess what did.

[–] wabasso@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

This is interesting and I get the appeal, but I’m too afraid of pirates to just live without a nation’s protection.

Ah Gender Reassignment Surgery, good choice. Thailand is the leading country to get medical support for this from.

Meh, the wait lists are huge, and unless you're committed to the pure Thai method, a lot of it's benefits are found in the now standard hybrid method. You can get pretty good bottom surgery in the US and Europe these days.

You don't understand!! He wouldn't be a dirty immigrant, he would be an expat!!!

That reminds me of the (apparently real) complaint by a British couple vacationing in Spain, who were outraged that nobody had told them so many people would be speaking Spanish. πŸ˜€

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seen one old lady on TV saying she moved to Spain because the UK was overrun with foreigners.

Was not a comedy.

[–] Whelks_chance@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Presumably the argument is "if I'm not going to understand what anyone is saying, can I at least be somewhere with less rain please?"

[–] NotEasyBeingGreen@slrpnk.net 41 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I believe it.

I worked with an Englishman who has lived in the Netherlands for more than 20 years without learning Dutch.

We had a work trip to Madrid, and he went the weekend beforehand for a short vacation. I ran into him on Sunday night and asked him how it went. He said it was terrible, because he's a vegetarian and couldn't eat anything because nobody spoke English. He didn't know what to order or how to ask if something was vegetarian. He was outraged that nobody spoke English. In Madrid. The capital of Spain. πŸ™ˆ

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Plenty of people speak English in Madrid. They were probably fucking with him because he’s British and was likely rude like the typical British tourist. If he just asked β€œHabla usted ingles?” Plenty of people would accommodate, especially hospitality staff.

[–] Delphia@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

That was the advice I got when I went to Europe.

Learn how to say four things "Hello", "Do you speak English?", "Sorry" and "Thank you" and most people will do their best to work with you.

Personally I'd just point to myself and say "No Hablo Espanol" my pronunciation is better than my spelling. Though I don't anyone would look at my pasty ass and assume I know any language outside of english and even then that's debatable.

I am never sure since I am American so know lots of Spanish from osmosis. But of course in any large European city there will be plenty of people who know enough English to help out. So yeah, he probably approached every interaction with stereotypical British arrogance and annoyed the people who would have been happy to help him otherwise. πŸ™ˆ

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Anywhere else I'd understand the outrage. But Dutch isn't a real language.

On behalf of the rest of the country that has more brain cells than a used tea bag, we'd like to issue an apology to Madrid, the Netherlands, and yourself for his ignorance.

There's some of us here who are trying their best to educate these people but it feels like trying to hold water in a sieve.

Or the British expats suddenly unable to stay in European countries after brexit and not accepting it was because of those who voted to leave the EU

[–] manxu@piefed.social 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

OMG the ones that voted for Brexit despite having a retirement home in the EU and then got kicked out for not paying taxes were hilarious!

"What do you mean we need a visa? THIS IS NOT THE BREXIT I VOTED FOR!!!"

[–] Whelks_chance@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To be fair, absolutely noone knew what type of Brexit was being voted on. That minor detail was left out of any of the conversation.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Fair enough. Although then Boris Johnson won the election, so someone was happy with his shit show Brexit, no?

[–] altasshet@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Or the German tourists in Italy who were sad that they just missed the ferry to Arrivare, but happy they can still take the one to Partenza.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

OI PABLO. DOS SERVEYSAS POUR FAVORR.

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago

It's not even that deep. "I'm voting right because I hate immigrants". And by "immigrant" they mean "not white".

[–] Francislewwis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The irony writes itself… rules for others, exceptions for me πŸ˜…

[–] Signtist@bookwyr.me 21 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They don't like integration, they like America. In their eyes immigrants will never be American regardless of how they act, they just think the American way of life is the only acceptable way of life, regardless of location.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why move to Thailand if you like America though?

[–] Signtist@bookwyr.me 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sun, cheap prices, and crime!

Still seems kinda flimsy. Like if I ever move there it’s because I love Thai food, want to learn more about the culture, and I want to see some bettas in the wild!

The way of life they are imagining has never actually existed, and has nothing traditionally β€œAmerican” about it. Back when that word wasn't an international slur.

In their eyes immigrants will never be American

Hmmm.
So there's like 10M Americans.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Can't believe a colonial settler would say and think like this

I don't think it's a valid fallacy since there would be a whole different set of issues if to many millionaire immigrants came to America and not learn the "culture".
