Lemon, lime bitters is an Australian staple for a non alcoholic drink if you're in a pub. Refreshing and tasty.

I'll often order a "soda and bitters" (carbonated water with a few dashes of this) when I'm out with friends but don't want to pound alcohol. It looks like a cocktail (so folks don't ask why I'm not drinking), keeps me hydrated, gives me something to do with my hands, and tastes like Christmas. Highly recommend.

I don't know why I never tried this, thanks!

Just for those who don’t want to drink for religious or other reasons bitters are often alcoholic. A dash or six in a half litre of soda is still functionally nothing but just so’s you know.

Aren't most bitters 30-40%? Have to check my collection of various bitters when I get home. I know for sure that actual vanilla extract is usually 15%+

Edit: also it's always bothered me the angostura has the label go so far above the start of the bottle's neck

Yeah, but LLB only uses a few drops of bitters and so only contains trace amounts of alcohol.

Medically, a couple dashes of bitters is irrelevant. But people often don't drink for philosophical, religious, or recovery reasons. For these people, zero means zero.

Non alcoholic bitters are available. They're made with a glycerin base.

Sooooo....probably shouldn't be drinking directly from the bottle should I?

My throat puckered up when I read this.

Perfection 🥰

Is there a lore reason the label is affixed to the bottle that way? Just curious.

[–] tychosmoose@piefed.social 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

According to the company, according to legend, after the founder's death, his two sons took over the business. They wanted to rebrand the bottle to enter the bitters into competitions. One redesigned the bottle, the other redesigned the label.
It was either too late to fix the mistake or they were too stubborn. One judge advised them to keep it, since it would be eye-catching for customers. They kept the glitch.

One judge advised them to keep it,

Fuck that guy specifically. It does my head in.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 12 points 1 day ago

Regardless of the original reason, it keeps drips from running down the neck all the way to the bottom, which can stain surfaces with surprising tenacity.

Trinidad sour is a must try cocktail. Use a strong orgeat; I like Liber & Co. but I’m sure you can find others similar.

1 measure heavily smoked mezcal
½ measure of gin
½ measure of demerara rum
5 heavy dashes of angostura bitters
Juice of 1 half lime Top with carbonated water and express lime rind on the result

I call it Pink Smoke

[–] Coldcell@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can taste the gin in that?

A decent Plymouth to punch that juniper through?

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

That's basically a given if you want gin taste but not gin bulk 🫶

[–] harrison_fnord@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Reminder to check if the mezcal has artificial smoke flavoring before you buy. The artificial stuff is indistinguishable for most people.

✊️ preach! The actual isn't good for you, the fake is worse...

Champagne Cocktail: A sugar cube at the bottom of a champagne flute, a few drops of bitters to taste, then add chilled champagne.
