I am looking to get an Apple Watch and I can’t decide whether or not to get the series 8 (or lower) vs the 9. The older series are much cheaper but the series 9 with the finger tap looks super cool, and I like that it’s much brighter. I was wondering what this sub would think.

I know I’ll use it a lot regardless of which version I get. The series 9 features are just tempting to me.

I chose the 8 a week ago, due to the 9 simply not having enough new in comparison the 8. Might as well save the money and spend them on peripherals. Next year, we’ll see what the X/10 has to offer.

I would get the Apple Watch Series 9 if I could afford it

I never had a smartwatch before. Got myself an ultra2. Just for size and design. My wife has the series 9 in 45mm. Also first smartwatch.

I was a bit hesitant but after a while I started loving it. It’s almost essential now.

I will say I’m already trying to figure out how to not have my ultra2 go dim at night, I do need the brightness myself, and I love the features.

Don’t have a frame of reference, this is my first Apple Watch. Went ultra for the bigger screen and better battery myself. Loving it so far!

What do you mean dim? Like the brightness level actually decreases? Or the screen goes black? Is it while you sleep or are you active/work at night? Just asking qs to try to help

[–] moparjd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I guess the tap is nice instead of having to use our nose like every other person, and yes just get the 9 and you won’t regret it

It’s not that much brighter after time you won’t notice a thing. I think as a first one and if you want to save money buy series 7 used. They are sooooo cheap now and still plenty of life in them and exactly the same functionality except double touch and temperature sensor that’s it. Don’t go lower as it’s not the best for battery life, was memory, problems with updates and slow charging. I’m using series 7 fine refuse to upgrade as there is no difference for me to spend money on the same thing it just doesn’t make a sense. The whole watch even looks the same …. I was so hyped for event and now do disappointed

Just to be clear, because sometimes it really isn’t obvious, but you do use an iPhone that supports iOS 17?

[–] ander-frank@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The series 8 and 9 are the same size. I would check out Apple's site for refurbished ones, you can get a good deal on a refurb (essentially new) one there. Just got a 45mm Series 8 for $320.

I bought my S6 a few months back and I'm super happy, but I already knew it mostly use the tracking functions and time. I don't know what I'd use a double tap for, but if you think you really need it then go for it I guess, but older apple watches are just fine too tbh.

[–] Takayanagii@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The se is 109 dollars. I'd start there and if you like it, upgrade in a few years.

Walmarts website. I got the 160 discount and then tnt drop it even more 💀

[–] dangggboi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you can wait till next year then wait. It’s rumored to be a big redesign with a new band system , making the old ones obsolete .

You can get a refurbished series 7 for cheap now also. The assistive touch which was replaced by the finger tap is good enough . Apple Watch power users have been using that feature for years

If you will use double tap and/or dictate a lot of texts to Siri, I’d say the 9 is worth it for you! I will also say that due to Apple’s annual release cycle for the watch, they really focus on one or two features every year, so if a new feature doesn’t excite you, the last years model sis basically the same. This year did include a chip upgrade, which facilitates the better integrated double-tap and on-board Siri. Going back to the 6, it got a new chip, S7 got a new screen, S8 got (moon) cycle tracking, so the 7 and 8 are basically the same to me(n).

I tend to buy older refurbished electronics lately, and that allowed me to afford a gold stainless sterl S7 for less than the holiday sale pricing of an aluminum 8 right now. So if you think you might like the nicer finish/durability of stainless or titanium case over the double-tap and Siri of the 9, maybe I might suggest budgeting more for the case than the newer model?

SE2 works great for most people

[–] AdPuzzleheaded6590@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like you might as well get the latest and greatest when it comes to tech, tech stuff gets outdated so quickly! Says the person who still had a series 3 watch haha

[–] Nihiliste@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'd get an S9 just for future proofing. That faster processor enables not just double-tap but offline Siri processing, and you can be virtually guaranteed that a few years from now, Apple will be designing with the S9's speed in mind. The S6, S7, and S8 all use the same processor tech, essentially, with some modest tweaks.

Don't get me wrong - you'd probably be delighted with an S8. You should also be considering non-Apple watches if you're mainly concerned with fitness, music, and/or notifications. A Garmin Forerunner will blow away any Apple Watch when it comes to battery life, for example.

[–] oughandoge@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I bought an s9 as my first AW, was largely swayed by double tap as a new exclusive feature. But when I tried it out I was quite disappointed, it didn’t work well for me and it wasn’t quite how I imagined (ie you can’t have your watch by your side and double tap to pause music).

I returned the S9 and am trying out a refurb s8 now. Still feeling out if that was the right choice, it was certainly a lot cheaper though.

[–] bnet247@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Get the 9. The double tap gesture is likely to be the first of many to come over the next few years. 9 will probably get future gesture updates and 8 will not. Don’t underestimate the brighter screen too

[–] faizalr17@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Maybe you should include SE as an option as well. Doubletap is gone in watchOS 10 (was available in 9) but I don’t really care. I just wanted to complete my ring.

[–] Relevant-Response-53@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I have the series 7 and neither the series 8 wasn’t worth it (I don’t have a vagina) nor was the series 9 (I’m not in need of finger tap accessible) .

You can get a used series 7 (fast charge/ bigger screen) and wait to see what series X has to offer

[–] Teggeroo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I will say the same thing about the series 6, which is what I have. The 7 and 8 had the exact same chip just renamed, other than a bigger screen I have no reason to upgrade. The 9 finally has a new chip, but nothing else (unless you count gesture controls which is already a thing in settings prior to the 9). I’m waiting for one of 2 things to happen before upgrading. Either the 6 stops getting software support, or we get new sensors (especially glucose sensors, as I’m a diabetic).

[–] FairlyWise@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When I was 10 my parents gave me an NES. I didn’t know any different and I loved it. Eventually I saw that my friends had ps3s and Xbox 360s, but the NES was already enough for me because I started with it. Maybe check out the Apple Watch SE

[–] thepu55ycat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Well for me when it comes to Apple products I always get the newer one. Future proofing. When they begin dropping OS support the 8 will go before the 9. It’s like that with all their products.

[–] atxfast309@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I got one mainly just use it as a fitness tracker and it is nice now I can leave my at home while on a run or hike.

Is it worth it probably not unless just got some cash to burn.

[–] teejaydubz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Upgraded from series 4 Apple Watch to series 9 this fall. I had buyers remorse at first but I really like the s9. The display looks good and it’s snappy and the battery is obviously great compared to my 5 year old series 4. Finger tap is a feature I could care less for though haven’t used it and never intend to

[–] nad0w@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Buy a SE trust me you will not miss anything !

[–] kandaq@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have the S4 which is now dying and no option to service the battery where I live so I’m upgrading to the S9 soon. Besides the speed, the only new thing I’m looking forward to is the larger screen. I will mostly keep AOD off. So I guess it doesn’t matter if I go for the S8 but I aim to keep my watch for at least 5 years hence getting the latest.

[–] aldoag206@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I really like my S9. I upgraded from an S8. I didn’t need to, but I was switching carriers and getting the 15PM. So I figured why not? I’m enjoying using the double tap. I bartend so my hands are not always free or clean. So double tap comes in handy when looking at notifications or text messages. You can scroll thru and dismiss some notifications and texts. it also allows you to respond to text messages. Plus the battery life on the S9 is a lot better than my S8.

[–] kiddredd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Go 9 or Ultra. Get the latest.
