Pretty sure that the Rolling Stones has a whole song about where this "beef" is coming from.

The Tyson beef plant that just got shutdown in the Midwest is going to fuck Republicans...

Not because of the 2-3k workers, not because of the increased price consumers pay.

But all the livestock owners who suddenly have nowhere near to slaughter cattle at scale are fucked. Couple that with flooding the market with Argentinian beef, and a lot of Republican voters are going to stay home for midterms.

They might not admit to themselves they want Republicans to lose majorities, and they'll likely spend the next two years bitching about Dems. But a lot of them just won't find the time to vote when they're getting fucked this blatantly

Tyson beef plant that just got shutdown

That is primarily a consequence of immigration crackdowns. Beef inflation up 9% while cattle is down 9%+

[–] stopdropandprole@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

this is an insight I hadn't considered.

makes intuitive sense but do you have any links or references so people can learn more?

I thought drought was a major factor in beef supply drop but it's probably multiple things

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 week ago

Meat packing is heavily biased towards foreign born workers. The companies have complained about high labour costs.

Cattle prices are from futures market charts. The typical market price effects from narratives of "high beef demand" and "Cattle shortages" would be higher cattle prices.

[–] mkwt@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The US beef supply is squeezed because some big droughts from a couple of years ago forced ranchers to sell off a lot of their herds.

Now, they don't have the herds to supply the demand, and you can't just magick more cows into existence. Once the problem exists, it takes a bunch of time to grow calves into cows.

The problem is exacerbated by a dynamic where the current high prices encourage ranchers to sell their cattle instead of keeping them around to grow the herd.

It's so weird to see this identity crisis in action.

The conservatives are actively screwing them over in every possible way, but they cannot imagine voting for a Democrat. You know, because, well, reasons. The dems are city folk. The dems are for loud-mouthed blue-haired women with nose rings. The dems are gonna take their guns and their gigantic truck (and their manhood). Because dems are for "gender ideology". Etc.

I'm stocking up on cat food before this shit ends up killing all of our pets.

It's primarily going to be put in animal food and processed foods.

Frozen pizzas. Tv dinners. Canned soups.

Sold to restaurants from their bulk suppliers. Especially fast food places.

Packaged frozen hamburger patties at grocery stores.

Any type of frozen meals with beef.

The big rolls of frozen hamburger.

It's going to be hard to avoid it but not impossible.

Avoid any beef you can't determine where it came from.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'd just become vegetarian if the veggies weren't also toxic. Republicans really have turned this place into a shit hole

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

And in this case, literally.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You can cook the vegetables

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Idk if this always gets out toxic pesticides. Like the kind that other countries ban that we don't.

Probably helps with the bacteria outbreaks though.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well, except for things like lettuce and things like garnish, but...yeah.

I'm so glad I'm a vegetarian when it comes to things like tainted meat, but plenty of vegetarian things can get tainted too, a common one being lettuce.

The good news is that they've slashed the CDC's capability of tracking food-borne illness.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

And stopped testing food for contaminants at all

I read an article today that there was tons of tainted beef that China turned down back in the spring. I forget which country has it. There is speculation that the US has bought it after that country called US to make deal. I will see if I can find the article.

Edit here is an article about it.

https://www.btimesonline.com/articles/178274/20260825/trump-opens-u-s-to-300-000-tons-of-foreign-beef-as-china-rejects-22-ton-argentine-shipment-over-banned-antibiotic.htm

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

No surprise that it's Argentina, whose president is friends with Trump.

[–] callmemagnus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Finally, Trump made access to medecin free...

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 29 points 1 week ago

If you're not already watching this guy, I recommend you start. He's pretty good. He says there's no way Argentina can produce and export 300k tons of beef in 3 months and it almost certainly comes from Brazil. He also explains why.

So don't eat beef. Or jalapeños. Or lettuce. Or granola. Or blueberries.

[–] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 week ago

Just don't eat. It's American roulette. The number of recent recalls due to broken glass contamination in everything from popsicles to bread has also risen, but I can understand not being up to speed when the entire food supply is slowly becoming hazardous to your health.

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Definitely avoid Driscolls

And they can't sell American beef to China anymore because well - you know. Before I went to Sam's club in Shanghai it was mainly USDA beef. Now there is no American beef at all. Only Australian. Which I prefer anyway. It's much better quality and less chemicals inside.

BTW China last week rejected a shipment of Argentinan beef because of banned antibiotics so perhaps it will get rerouted to the US. Where the regime clearly does not care about food safety standards anymore.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Basically, American beef is a hard sell outside the US because it is full of things that don't belong in food in many countries. Of the thousands of beef farmers in the US, there is barely a dozen qualified to deliver beef to the EU. Think about it.

Did China ever buy it?

The reason why people don’t want it is that it doesn’t meet standards, generally with disease prevention.

That’s why we don’t buy it here in Australia. We would if it met our standards but it never does.

My friend had a great theory that it's the horses being put to slaughter.

Wild horses slaughtered = mystery beef.

Peak capitalism. Billions of exploited, unidentified animals suffering for profit. Corpse flesh of an unknown species.

How we treat other creatures seems to be a reflection of how we treat one another as a species.

China wouldn't take this tainted beef so ofc the shithead does. Probably pat himself on the back for thinking about the little guy...

Fucking moron. What's going to be next that we can't eat? Fruit? Potatoes? Bread???

China wouldn't take it so trump bought it up and will sell diseased beef to Americans because he doesn't give a shit if we die as long as he makes money off it.

Can't be worse than not eating meat apparently

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm gonna be real, the majority of the US will never give up eating meat. It's engrained in the culture and the way people live every day. It would be like asking people to give up couches and only ever use chairs.

You know, the last couple of years has had me setting up solar power, buying an EV, and eating almost no animal products except for eggs from my spoiled chickens.

I think trimp is a leftist plant being used to trick everyone into being more environmentally friendly. At least thats what I like to point out to conservatives.

People coming up with all those crazy theories while the most likely explanation is that that there is no beef. It's not the first time Trump promised something without ever planning on delivering it.

[–] aSaabD00d@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Its coming from the US where they store huge amounts of frozen beef to keep the price high. I know they did that with pork a few years back.

[–] Octavio@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah, if I still lived in the US, I think I'd be ordering the chicken for the time being. Just say "Neigh" to Trump's mystery meat.
